What a great game. There was a good amount of LU fans there, including our cheerleaders and it got pretty loud up in our section for the few we had standing up and chanting. I held up the "West Point Rejects" and "Larry Owns Reggie" sign. I also took my Killer B's sign but some cadet ran up to me as we were leaving and snatched it out of my hands and ran away with it. :x Ace was incredible, as was Brew and Larry. I love how the points came on a break away dunk. I hope they kept that ball to give to him, and I hope they honor him at our tournament game or on the stage at convocation.

That was insanely boring. I hope we NEVER do that.

There was that, along with "40 Year Old Virgin," "R-Rated Movies," and "Evolution" chanted regularly. I was also told I was fat. I didn't realize it before tonight that I was fat though. I never would've known.
PAMedic wrote:from the sounds of the clapping, singing and cheering you'd think these guys (VMI) had won

wish LU fans were that into it.
They were doing their fight song and alma mater, but a lot of it was us.

That was a fun game. I always love going to Cameron Hall. It's a great place to watch a game.

Everyone's said stuff about the game, so I won't say it again.

VMI missed 30 3-pointers. I know because I had a sign that said, "VMI Missed 3's" and I put a tally everytime they missed one.

HUGE props to the athletic department. The bus trip was great. Everyone had a good time. It's fun meeting new people and things like that and when you're sitting in a bus, you're kinda forced to talk to other people. The entire athletic department was at the game, as was Coach Rocco. They came up huge with this, and I hope it carries to football next year.

I'm tired so I'm reading the rest of the board and going to bed.

yeah i was totally bummed about not being able to be there. as SJ said there was a tanker accident on I-81 and traffic heading towards lexington was backed up for 14 miles. i tried every back road i could think of and they were jammed up, so it was the soothing tones of jerry edwards for me  anyway, wow what a game. that was some serious up and down action. ACE was indeed a beast, and quality efforts by LB and brew as well. the LU crowd sounded great over the radio, and with all the smack being run by the cadets, maybe this will really get htis rivalry started. congrats to LB for the record, and hopefully we will lockup the home game next tuesday and we can give LB a true salute. now it's time for radford saturday!

By the way, after we chanted "West Point Rejects" they started chanting "Seminary Rejects." That had the entire LU section laughing.

See SJ, THAT is the sort of chanting / Heckling that we need more of!!! It is soooo much better than "You suck"!! Of course I am sure they NEVER heard THAT one before. Still a classic.

No back to our regularly scheduled postmortum.
(Good win, we seem to love that up and down style HINT HINT)

We started taunting them at the end of the game with "We Can't Hear You." They didn't seem to like that too much.

Haize or GMTM, answer this one:

VMI sets a screen for a kid popping out for a 3. Our guy goes through the screen, but fouls the play setting the screen. The other player shoots a 3, and makes it. They call a foul on us, give them three points, and the player setting the screen got two foul shots. I thought this play made sense, others didn't. I'm assuming it was the right call, but can you explain it either way?

Of course it was a bad call. Just another example of the Ref's out to get LU. The heathens!!
It appears to be the correct call. These are two different actions 1) The shooter who was not fouled and able to complete his shot. 2) The screener was legal and than fouled by the defender. This is obviously a foul. If it was foul 7, 8 or 9 than the screener would be shooting the 1 and 1. If 10 or above than 2 shots. The only HOWEVER, is if the shooter had not released the ball (It could also be interpreted as the shooter "starting his motion") If the foul occured BEFORE the shooter released his shot, then the play is dead and only the foul on the screener comes into play.
To REALLY put your thinking caps on: What if the defender pushes the screener who runs into the shooter while in the act of shooting? THAT is a sticky wicket!

That's about as good of an explanation as you are going to get, I can't add anything else to that...It's a play that doesn't happen much, the LU player must have pushed the screener pretty good or really displaced him...Sounds like the right call to me all in all

that same call happened to UNC when they played Va Tech, it is a tough one to swallow, but it's part of the game

If this was a weekend none of our chants would have been heard....it's a different world when the Keydets have to come (dont have a choice). This is a great great win...and we should all be excited b/c we've been just a few pieces away from doing something huge and maybe, just maybe with Alex's new confidence it'll be all we need

From Chris:
Blair becomes Big South's top gun

By Chris Lang
Lynchburg News & Advance
February 22, 2007

LEXINGTON - Larry Blair broke the Big South's all-time scoring record with a dunk. The Liberty guard rarely tries them. He's generously listed at 6 feet tall, and some of his dunk attempts in the past had ended badly.

Sometimes he failed to get the ball through the hoop. Other times, he changed his mind halfway to the basket when he realized he had no shot at the dunk, instead opting for a layup.

His dunk in Liberty's 118-108 victory over VMI at Cameron Hall on Wednesday was true and clean. He took the ball on the fast break and raced to the lane, dunking home points 2,151 and 2,152 to push past Coastal Carolina's Tony Dunkin and break a 14-year-old Big South record.

"That was my first dunk this year - that I was well aware of," Blair said with a chuckle, alluding to his comments earlier this year that he didn't realize he had a realistic shot of breaking Dunkin's mark when the season began.

Blair's record was just one of many storylines in Liberty's victory, just the team's second on the road this season. The win clinched LU at least fourth place in the Big South, meaning the Flames will open the league tournament next Tuesday at the Vines Center, where the athletic department is planning to honor Blair's accomplishment.

Liberty will most likely host VMI, but there are still some scenarios that have UNC Asheville finishing fifth or Liberty finishing third. Both of those would require an unlikely UNCA win at third-place Coastal Carolina today.

As good as Blair was - he had 28 points, seven rebounds and five assists - he was upstaged by teammate Alex McLean, who put together a dominating performance in the post.

The junior forward nearly became the first player in Division I to have a 40-20 game this season. He had 40 points and 19 rebounds, hit 16 of 22 field goals and sank all eight of his free throws.

"We've really challenged him to finish this conference season strong, and he's really embracing it," Liberty coach Randy Dunton said. "He went through a stretch this season where fatigue hit him, his low-post defense slipped, even his rebounding totals were down. We challenged him to be more aggressive and we knew he was going to have opportunities around the rim tonight."

The Flames (13-16, 7-6 Big South) outrebounded VMI 61-22 and set a school record for defensive rebounds with 46.

Liberty was the aggressor on defense early, turning stops into transition points and building a 47-23 lead 14:24 into the game. The Keydets (12-17, 5-8) missed 25 of their first 31 shots.

"If you're missing shots, your energy wanes on defense," VMI coach Duggar Baucom said. "If you miss shots, a lot of times they turn into easy baskets on the other end."

VMI chipped the lead to 76-72 with 12:31 left when Reggie Williams scored a three-point play. Liberty's Anthony Smith (14 points, 10 rebounds) answered with a quick bucket, and Liberty was able to keep VMI at arms length the rest of the way.

Liberty played sort of a prevent offense in the final six minutes. The Flames broke the 100-point mark with 6:13 left when Dwight Brewington dunked home two of his 26 points. After that, Liberty became deliberate, winding down the shot clock to less than 10 seconds before looking for a shot.

If the Flames learned anything from the teams' first meeting, a 122-117 Liberty win in Lynchburg in which VMI rallied from 24 down in the second half, it was to limit the Keydets' possessions late in the game.

"In the first game, we were up 14, and within a minute, we were up three," McLean said. "With that kind of team, a 10-point lead means nothing. That's a minute's worth of play, if that. We just tried to play a little keep away, and run the clock down.

Williams, the nation's leading scorer, led the Keydets with 34 points. Chavis Holmes scored 26 and Fred Robinson added 19. After the rowdy crowd cleared out of Cameron Hall, players from both teams trudged back to the court to meet family members, tired and sore, and most likely, ready for Round 3 next Tuesday.

"It's going to be tough," Williams said. "They took two from us already. But you know, they say the third time is a charm. So I'm hoping the third time will be our charm and we'll get a win."
