Lady Flames Open Season With 5-3 Victory Over Appalachian State
Sarah Ellis struck out a career-best 11 batters in helping Liberty to a 5-3 victory over Appalachian State.

Sarah Ellis struck out a career-high 11 batters and Sarah Swor’s had a two-out two-run single in the seventh, helping Liberty open the year with a 5-3 victory over Appalachian State, Saturday morning, at the GWU Softball Complex.

The Lady Flames got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning as Sarah Swor led off the frame with a single through the left side of the infield. Two batters later, Jessica Leary connected on an opposite-field home run, sending a 3-2 pitch over the fence in right for her first career homer to give Liberty a 2-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when Appalachian State exploded for three runs. Danielle Peters led off the inning with a single straight back up the middle and then she stole second.

The lead-off batter continued to show her speed by swiping third base and was able to score as the throw to third was errant. Robyn Bronson kept things going for the Mountaineers with a double to right center. Liberty got the next two batters to keep the ball in the infield for outs; however, Stephanie Long gave Appalachian State its first lead of the game with a two-run homer to right field, putting the Mountaineers up 3-2.

But the lead was short lived for Appalachian State as Swor led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo homer to center field, knotting the score at 3-3.
The Lady Flames regained the lead in the top of the seventh as both Jeffs and Jessica Moore led off the frame by drawing walks.

Relief pitcher Kayla Richardson got the next two batters out, but Swor got her third hit of the game, driving in both Jeffs and Moore with a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield to give Liberty the victory.

Jeffs and Swor led the Lady Flames from the plate as Jeffs was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and Swor was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two hits. Moore and Leary were both 1-for-3 with Leary driving in two with the round tripper.

Ellis went the distance for the Lady Flames, scattering four hits which led to two earned runs. The sophomore also struck out a career high as she fanned 11 batters. Richardson picked up the loss in relief as she allowed two runs on two hits and three walks in one inning of work.

The Lady Flames will now play two against Gardner-Webb with the first game starting at 1:35 p.m.

Lady Flames Explode With 14 Hits En Route To 10-2 Game 1 Win Over Bulldogs

Four of Liberty’s first five batters in the lineup recorded multiple hits as Liberty opened up a non-conference doubleheader with a 10-2 victory over Gardner-Webb, Saturday afternoon, at the GWU Softball Complex.

Liberty wasted little time taking the lead as they scored two runs in the top of the first inning. J’nae Jefferson led off the game by drawing and walk, followed by Dawn Jeffs’ single back up the middle. After an infield single by Ashley Williams, starting pitcher Angie Walls continued to struggle with her control, walking both Beth Bennett and Sarah Swor to force in two runs and give Liberty a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Flames added to their lead in the second inning as Shannon McKain led off the inning with a sharp single down the left field line, followed by a bunt single by Jefferson.

Jeffs got her fifth-straight hit of the day with a single to right to drive in McKain, followed by a RBI base knock up the middle off the bat of Moore to drive in Jefferson. Moore recorded the final run of the frame as she scored from second after Jessi Williams was unable to handle a ball hit by Ashley Williams to shortstop, allowing Liberty to take a 5-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb got on the scoreboard in the third inning as Williams hit a two-out solo home run to straightaway center field, her first of the year, trimming Liberty’s lead to 5-1.

However, Liberty exploded for five runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning to put the game away. Jefferson started the scoring outburst as she crossed the plate after another fielding error by Williams, while Swor hit her second home run of the day as the three-run blast to right-center field, plating Moore and Bennett and to give Liberty a nine-run lead.

A single by Kelly Linsley followed by a RBI double off the fence in center field gave the Bulldogs their second run of the game, but Dana Wheeler, in her first collegiate pitching appearance, was able to get the final three outs of the frame to seal the victory.

Bennett led the Lady Flames from the plate as the first baseman finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Jefferson (2-for-2 with two runs scored), Jeffs (2-for-4 with a run score and a RBI), Moore (2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI) and McKain (2-for-3 with a run scored) all followed with multiple-hit games.

Swor was also the victor in the circle for Liberty as she allowed one run on three hits in four innings of work, walking three and strikeout out four batters. Wheeler allowed the one run on two hits as she worked the final inning for Liberty.

Walls suffered the loss for Gardner-Webb as she allowed five runs on six hits in one-plus innings of work, while Alison Coffey allowed the final five runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

Lady Flames’ Rally Falls Short As Liberty Drops Second Game, 9-5, To Gardner-Webb

Gardner-Webb jumped out to a six-run lead before Liberty started to get its offense going as the Bulldogs took game two of a non-conference doubleheader, 9-5, Saturday afternoon, at GWU Softball Complex.

With the opening 5-3 victory over Appalachian State to start the opening and the split doubleheader with Gardner-Webb, Liberty opens the 2007 season with a 2-1 record.

Gardner-Webb took the lead early in the contest as Emily Sherrill got a two-out solo home run to center field with the ball hitting off the top of the fence and falling over to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb took advantage of two Liberty fielding errors to added three runs to its lead. Back-to-back infield errors allowed Jessi Polk and Lindsay Cox to reach base. Both runners advantaged on a stolen base and Polk scored on a sacrifice fly by Abbie Looper, while two batters later Emily Sherrill drove in two more with a single to right center field, pushing Gardner-Webb’s lead to four runs, 4-0.

Gardner-Webb continued to added to its lead and once again a miscue was costly for Liberty as a fielding error prolonged the fourth inning, allowing Sherrill to strike again with a two-RBI double to right field, plating Cox and Linsley to push the Bulldogs lead to 6-0.

Liberty, who didn’t get its first hit of the game until the top of the fifth inning, finally started to get things going in the sixth as J’nae Jefferson led off the frame with a single down the left field line. Two batters later, Ashley Williams drove in Jefferson with a base hit up the middle, followed by a two-run homer to left field by Beth Bennett, trimming the Bulldogs’ lead to 6-3.

However, Gardner-Webb plated four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away. The four-run outburst was highlighted by a RBI single by Linsley to drive in Cox, followed by a two-run single to the gap in right field by Mandy Ward to plate Linsley and Sherrill.

Liberty tried to keep things going in the top of the seventh inning as Jessica Leary led off the frame with a double to left center field, followed by a two-run homer over the fence in right center off the bat of Beth Hensley. But, the attempted rally was halted by relief pitcher Alison Coffey to give the home team a split on the day.

Bennett led the Lady Flames in the contest as she was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Hensley was 1-for-3 with two RBI off the seventh-inning homer.

Taryn Beck picked up the victory for the Bulldogs as she allowed three runs on four hits during 5 2/3 innings of work. Terra Lowe suffered the loss as she allowed four runs, with only one being earned, on three hits in 1 2/3 innings of work. Sarah Ellis finished off the game by allowing five runs, with only two earned, on six hits over 4 1/3 innings of work.

The Lady Flames will next take to the softball diamond when they travel to Kennesaw, Ga., to participate in the KSU Classic, hosted by Kennesaw State. The two-day event, starting on Saturday, includes host Kennesaw State, Liberty and the College of Charleston.
