I know that this is why a lot of people justified voting for Trump but if he makes this nomination now, i may be more willing to give my vote to a 3rd party candidate. If he holds off, I'd begrudgingly vote for Trump. There is no way I am alone in that thinking.
But you're right, it is probably better to do it now when senate majority and the presidency is guaranteed. It just sends the message that Trump and the RNC aren't as confident about November as they like to pretend they are.
