Rude and crude
I am an alumnus of and strong supporter of Liberty University; however, after attending a basketball game at LU on Saturday night, I was very disappointed with the actions of some LU students.
LU was playing High Point University. I have a family member involved with the High Point team so our family attended the game to show our support for him. It was 19 family members who went to the game. We sat in the designated High Point section. The section was 107 and we had 10 rows designated. In the middle of our 10 rows were several LU fans. They were very rude. They kept standing up and holding poster board signs over their heads. They were blocking the view for the High Point fans. I saw several High Point fans ask them to please put the signs down, but this only made them wave the signs that much more. Security guards were contacted about the matter, but they only walked through the section and said nothing.
This behavior does not match the behavior that LU students should display. There was a family of one of the players sitting in this area and these rude LU students blocked much of their view. High Point fans only had 10 rows designated; it looks like LU fans could how respect to the opposing team by allowing the opposing team to have their designated 10 rows. There were plenty of empty seats in the remaining sections of the Vines Center that were designated for LU fans.
As an alumnus of LU, I was appalled by the rude behavior. LU strives to have a good reputation and it is a shame that there are a few students who are trying to ruin that good reputation.

My mistake. Cheering is not bad. Standing and Cheering (esp with SIGNS  ) is APPALLING

I have a message for Ms. Parker:

YOU ARE NOT A SPORTS FAN. Do us all a favor and stay home next time. Or host a bingo match at your church.

I can just see her watching me and SMOOTIE at a hockey game

she would probably stroke out.

ignorant...something tells me they haven't been to, to many sporting events.

I'd like to see her try and get other students to sit down...."Ummmm excuse me camron crazie...I'm gonna need you to sit down...and try not to get any more blue paint on me please"

probably also feels that Christians shouldn't win or be competetive in the first place.

Love everyone, weave baskets, sing kum-by-ah

I may be in the minority, but I have to agree with Wanda on this one. I'm fine with the LU fans doing their thing, but they shouldn't be sitting in the area designated for the visiting team; I have season tickets that I paid good money for, and LU has designated a section just for season ticket holders, but the students will sit there as well, standing and holding their signs. Let them stand and hold their signs, but not in my section, unless they are willing to pay the extra money to sit (or stand) there.

This is a problem that is not just at LU. Being a lifetime UVa fan, I have been to countless bball and fball games where I have been standing up and cheering, only to have the people behind me always ask me to sit down. IMO, if I have a ticket to be in that game, I have the right to stand or the right to sit. You can't force what you want to do on everyone else in the stadium.

As far as th e students being in the HPU section, it's a part of the game. Look at UNC/Duke, there were UNC fans that camped out at duke to sit in the middle of the cameron crazies just to get under their skin. It's a part of sports.

oh my goodness....I am so sick and tired of hearing about how rude Liberty students are...its a freaking basketball game...and I would call Liberty kids far from rude at sporting events...just listen to some of them attempt to trash talk....

but this is to be expected from some in Lynchburg....always looking for something to complain about when it comes to Liberty...it always comes back to students not acting "Christian" enough....its so cool

Let's go to HPU and sit in their section and see how accepting they are to us.

It's a sporting event. Pay the extra dollar and sit on the baptist side. No cheering going on there. Unless you sit behind VP Hine, yikes, look out.

That statement really needs its own thread. We had the misfortune of sitting behind of him once last year. The language is definitely worse than PG-13.

Maybe the Vines should designate there sections a little clearer. I was at the Buffalo game and they had an entire section marked student section. Whether they were all students, who knows, they had it in a great spot, right behind the Liberty bench. In the first 15 rows, regualar fans sat, but above that those students were standing up and really laying it on the LU bench and one crazy LU fan who had a Faith in the Furnace shirt. I remember some of the comments like, hey faith, do you heat with gas or electric. Hey faith i think you have gone up to the communion line one too many times. It was pretty brutal on the lad. RD took a beating to.

You're talking about Mark Hine, right? If so, I have a vastly different recollection of his version of "trash talk". I was next to him during the 3OT fiasco vs Coastal in '05 and I would have described his fan behavior as actually less than G-rated. It was really loud but really weak at the same time. I don't think I'll ever forget that repeated warbling cry of "You're lame, ref! You hear me? You're a lamer! You're such a lamer!"

The students are told, "Here, sit on this side of the arena." If there are reserved spots for opposing fans, they don't mark it worth crap.

I'm an alumnus of Liberty University, and I wanted to say how appalled I was during the High Point game, too. Didn't LU realize that there were High Point fans and players who drove all the way to Lynchburg to see the team? It was very un-Christian-like for them to send all of them home disappointed. I am appalled by the rude behavior of the players who kept on trying to stop the Panthers from scoring, and worse, tried to score themselves on the offensive side. LU showed absolutely no consideration for the other teams' feelings while en route to their win. I wonder what Jesus would have done.

As an alumnus of LU, I was appaled by the rude behavior. LU strives to have a good reputation, and it is a shame that there are a few athletes who are trying to ruin that good reputation.

I am "standing" with Wanda on this one as well. (SO that makes two of us)
I don't think the issues are the signs and yelling. I think the issue is with WHERE that was happening. You PHilly people can understand that certainly. what if a cowboys fan showed up in the "wrong" section? Perhaps that is WHY you have a jail in your stadium.
It has constatnly been a battle to clearly delineate where the opposing fans are supposed to sit. I am not sure why this is, since about every other school in America can do it. I do know that double headers are difficult b/c you have the benches reversed for some moronic reason, so you would therefore have to move the student section during the game.
Solution? Find a spot where you are not in the midst of the opposing fans (SJ, you may want to ask Kevin Keys or Mr. Goodbar where that is) then set up shop BESIDE them. THAT would be fun!!!
