Roads are horrible...
...stay home. Took me all of one minute longer to get here to LU today.

Roads and sidewalks on campus were clear as of 630 AM.

hahahahaha....of course they were, i knew it would be fine...at least LU isn't as bad as the public schools around here that closed all day....I am from florida and i think this is kind of ridiculous, but then again I don't have any early classes so i could care less if they cancel classes in the morning

I was reading an article about that recently which talked about public schools on the "traditional snow border" pulling the trigger on closing more quickly and more often these days because of our lawsuit happy society. It explains a lot, really.

Of course, with the way my fellow southerners drive in the slick stuff, I'm not sure I would want to put my kids on a bus either.

It was fine at 1:30 this morning when we came home. Everyone was making a huge deal about how bad the roads were before we left WU and they were fine. Sure, there was snow on them, but I dropped to right at the speed limit or 5 under and tried to stay in the same tracks that other people had used and I did just fine.

You have to understand, people like me -- have never driven in snow. I live on a beach. We get snow once a year, maybe, and the rest of the year the coldest it gets is 50.

Call me grandpa if you want.

I clean medical clinics for my job and we have to drive between buildings...I was driving to the last building and we normally take a couple side roads to get there faster...well they were absolutely terrible, i was basically going up this hill sideways....actually it was kind of fun...haha...and my boss showed up to the building 20 minutes after we did because some idiots decided to fly down the hill, they couldn't stop so therefore ran into the guardrail....people don't know how to drive in this stuff...so Liberty has to take that into consideration, especially with the growing number of commuter students....

A couple things about Lynchburg. 1. Hills, 2. College Students who are from the south, 3. Lynchburg doesn't get much snow.

Three reasons it can get crazy when snow covers the roads in Lynchburg.

The worst reason by far is all the hills, combine that with drivers who don't slow down and you get accident city. My first experiences driving in the snow came in Lynchburg in a rw drive pickup. Never again....in a rw drive pickup. Went up a hill in the city and down backwards sliding back and forth with cars parked on both sides of the street. Fortunatley i didn't hit anyone or anything. After that, I went back to my apartment. Once I got a Camry things were a little better the next year. Still, a tuff city to drive in when it snows.

Four wheel drive doesn't help if you don't know how to drive when it's slick. It only helps get you out of the ditch.

i drive a box, idk if its front or rear, you just need to know how to drive. for instance, two nights ago when it was snowing, you could tell the snow was completely powder and dry, there was no ice on the ground, and the snow was not wet to create ice, hence, you dont need to go 5 mph, speed limit is fine, just allow yourself more space behind the car in front of you for stopping. learn to turn into the slide if you do start sliding.

You're full of crap. If you drive the speed limit on snow covered roads (I don't care how powdery it is) you are nuts.

If the road is completely covered, not patchy, drive now faster than 35.

I disagree. I was driving down 460 at 1:15am and it was completely covered. I was going about 55 or so and just following in the tracks that the person in front of me made. I was fine, didn't slip at all.

well it also comes into play of how new your tires are, i have brand new ones on, and SJ you were talking about a new car a while ago, idk if you got it but if you did im sure you have brand new tires as well. Now obviously if i had no tread i wouldnt be going speed limit. I also know that in chicago they do a process known as siping to the tires to give more traction, dont know if they do that here, but yeah. Powder isnt what makes you slip.

it really depends on what kind of car you have...and if you have a rear wheel drive car much like myself then driving in snow (especially up hills) becomes a task and a half....I have a Ford Explorer at one time and it handled very well in the snow up here...but I no longer have that...i often wish it didn't die on me and become the most undependable car ever...but such is life...

I didn't say you were going to wreck. It just inherently more dangerous to drive the speed limit on a snow covered road. Good tires and a good car/truck make it safer, but there is no replacement for slowing down.

So, go ahead, keep driving the speed limit on snow, one day you'll wish you hadn't. 8)
