I hear this from Freeze and McCaw a bunch, “to be among the best G5 programs out there” when talking about the vision. Do you all think they mean foreseeable vision or long term vision. My hope is the foreseeable vision is that but long term is P5. Any thoughts?

I think it all has to be with the understanding that conference realignment will happen eventually and put ourselves in a great position for it. UCF and Boise St are Brainers to strengthen a conference. Cincy and Appy St are also compelling teams.

Only when JFJR figures out being considered G5 anything is a loser and we commit to P5 equivalent scheduling - until then, we will be on the G5 coaching carousel and limited to G5 recruiting and G5 fan base. 2026 anyone ? - I will start the petition...

Boise is too far from mainstream America.
Appy State would not bring much to ANY conference.
UCF would be good addition is any conference.

If we are talking football only then Boise State will get picked up regardless of the main-stream America stuff because of their consistency and their fans travel well. Living out in Montana has shown me that Boise State owns Idaho, Eastern Washington, Wyoming and even some of the Dakotas.

They will fit in nicely wherever they go.

I've heard Freeze mention this as a short term goal. I believe it was something aki to being a top G5 in the near future. I don't know that P5 level was ever mentioned specifically but it seemed implied.

I would respectfully disagree with ASU. App is a program that continues to grow and has no fear in competition. They are quickly becoming the school in NC that folks just have an admiration for....regardless of primary fandom. I know lots of alumni from around the Carolinas who pull for App just because they are so passionate, driven, and tenacious. They even got a standing ovation from the Penn State faithful for the toughness they demonstrated against Nittany Lions at Penn. Their students remind me alot of LU as well. Very loyal group at App.

None of those are close to Houston,Cincinnati, UCF; SDSU in terms of all sports and geography for P5 consideration and Memphis is right there also

Just a few places off the top of my head where schools have built big time athletic programs.

State College, PA
Bloomington, IN
Oxford, MS
Charlottesville, VA
Blacksburg, VA

Take away the university and none of these towns would be much larger than Boone, NC, and some are smaller. In addition, none are much closer to a major population center than Boone is to Greensboro/Winston-Salem.

True, but times are different in this day and age.

Does appy state have baseball and softball ? Has their basketball teams ever been to NCAA tournament

Yes, they play both baseball and softball and their men's basketball team has been to the NCAA tournament twice. Not very relevant however, since they are a football school, with multiple FCS national championships and multiple bowl appearances since moving up to FBS. Their football success dwarfs that of Liberty at this point in time.

No argument that times have changed. Everything is MORE accessible now than it was "back in the day".

After Liberty I'm a Penn St fan. With all due respect you can create a big time school just being a one sport school. State College is in the middle of nowhere and it becomes the 3rd largest city in the state on game days. There arnt many schools out there that are known for more then one sport outside of your Ohio St's and Floridas.....People in the Carolina's love their sports and have wanted a decent football team for a while. App St is that underdog school in the mountains that everyone here seems to now have a lot of respect for. They are outside of the longtime rivalries of (UNC/Duke/NCState or USC and Clemson) so people dont mind rooting for them. If they continue their success I can see that school dominating this area for recruiting and a fan base to back them.

Most primary state colleges were started in small towns - Name one outlier that has had a P5 conference invite in last 25 years where geography, tv demographics and multi sport success were not part of it. I still can’t fathom how UCF hasn’t been gobbled up yet.

It may not have been a No, but that response was a much stronger indication that he is going to be here a few years and has bought into the Liberty culture.

I believe it would be somewhat irresponsible if any head coach didn't listen to at least a phone call. FSU wouldn't be doing its due diligence if it didn't contact prime HC candidates. HC Freeze is a good candidate, but I believe there are a few other big name hires that they would go after, namely Stoops, Meyer, Fleck (Minn), OC Scott (Clemson), Franklin. There are a few others, but I don't see Freeze leaving, especially because of the love from LU he has received.

FSU just paid Taggart $20 million to go away. That may indicate they need someone on the cheap. Otherwise there might be Mi$$ions of reasons for Freeze to go to FSU. Because everything else there seems a good fit for him. They have a pretty strong FCA presence Resources Tradition and Support to win a P5 conference and rebuild something
I’d be more worried if this happened next year though
