Ok, so G5 schools are guaranteed a New Years day bowl game. HF has stated he wants to be among the elite of g5 schools. What path does LU need to take to ensure that we, as an independent, are eligible for this g5 slot should we be deserving? Do we partition the ncaa for clarification that indepependents are eligible? I think LU needs to be proactive and ahead of the curve before we have to answer this question after the fact. If suit is needed, it may take a while to wind through the courts.

One of many issues - Independents are not allowed a 13th game under NCAA rules - allowing an Independent with only 12 games is a fairness issue ( plus the fact the actual G5 conferences banded together and pushed for a NY6 game for highest rated champion and now Independents are going to ask to leap frog their agreement based on a fewer game schedule ?

Probably best to take just one step at a time. Let's get to our first bowl game and then think about a NY bowl. :) Kinda cool to dream about though.

We can go 12-0 and still not get to a bowl this year. Cure Bowl still has to take eligible Sunbelt / Conf USA teams over us or am I missing something ?

You are right. It’s one of the downsides to INDY. We are not guaranteed a bowl and we are not in the conversation for the G5 access bowl bid.

Yes, Bowls rule post season to an extent ( outside playoffs ) - and how much they are locked in I don’t have the energy to research other than the fact LU isn’t guaranteed anything - but on a positive note I prefer to get left out and have a legit whine and have the media create a ruckus about it. We talked about it earlier but ND needs a 13th game for beta points in Playoff Committee - I still say an 8 team conference alliance ( meaning 8 teams that don’t have to play each other but can, with set metric of tip 2 ranking, RPI, SOS, head to head, etc - do a playoff in Indianapolis ( essentially a home game for ND and gives them a “title game” Makes a ton of sense for ND - let them push to bring in 2 more teams to Indy and make it happen.

I mean it makes sense if the NCAA would allow it but there would have to be some bowls tied to the conference. This past year it would have been 12-0 ND vs AP top 25 10-2 Army. Why not put it somewhere good for recruiting so the teams that go can use it as a way to recruit (maybe Jacksonville). No one has to play each other, solely go off of CFP ranking and if there aren’t two ranked teams it goes to best records.

Indianapolis simply because it entices ND to do it and everything hinges on them wanting to do it and driving the train. I don’t think any of the other Independents would complain about the locale even if ND wasn’t in the game every year. Sub tier bowls for sure would take the winner - ND would have to retain autonomy to play a bigger bowl if selected ( they always get a NY6 invite over equal teams due to fan base and TV rev ). Simply put - if there is no downside for ND and they retain flexibility post season and allows them a 13th game for Playoff committee to have to factor in it is a very viable option. Originally I was looking at an Independent schedule where ND would have to play 3 Indepenents every year - but in reality, it isn’t even a requirement. NCAA simply states 8 teams required for a Conference - they don’t stipulate anything else. They won’t step in and stop it if ND is pushing it and it generates more revenue. BYU and LU should be pitching this to ND - grab UCONN and JMU or whomever and lets go...

Not a bad plan. Incentives for ND would be an additional home game and they can get additional revenue via their network. Opponant would get what would amount to a money game and an opportunity to garner an nice bowl bid.

I could see a Boise St ( football heavy but sort of stuck in a bad conference that doesn’t make $ ) or non AAC type team switching to the Independent Alliance Group which would be Football Only with a shot at ND in a title game every year ( if they could keep rest of their teams in Mountain West or WAC or whatever they are in...realistically if BYU, Army and LU comes on strong it could be quickly be viewed as tough as AAC ( top heavy conference ). Houston might would even be interested in leaving AAC and dump rest of their teams in different conference - hadn’t put too much thought in to that part of it - but it is intriguing

I think ND still thinks they have a sweet deal playing with house money with the NCAA. I just don’t see the incentive for them to want to do something like this badly enough.

Boise State or others can’t leave without a guaranteed conference home for all other sports. And many of them would see their other sports tossed out spitefully for leaving the other members in the lurch by leaving in football.

ND knows they got away with one last year with Playoff Committee - that 13th game is a big deal ( with a 4 team playoff ). 13th game of ticket rev ( wont be as much as a normal home game but still significant plus lions share of TV rev for that game ) it is plenty of incentive with no downside.

And I’m sure ND would give up their ACC affiliation in other sports for this deal as well

NCAA has 2 sets of rules, 1 for ND and 1 for other 300+ schools.

As for a 13th game, conferences championship games is one of the worst things NCAA has ever implemented .

What does the ACC have to do with it? They simply have a scheduling agreement with them that wouldn’t change. Again, the whole point of it is ND doesn’t have to play anyone in the Alliance - just play the champ game if in fact they have highest ranking, SOS or whatever parameters IAC sets...This is Football only - has nothing to do with any other sports.

Right it is 5 games a year. ND can never play in ACC champ game. What are you guys talking about ? You think ND signed something that prohibited them from playing in a conference in name only champ game if it doesn’t prohibit the ACC scheduling agreement? It would be same weekend as ACC champ game and all other P5 champ games that ND can never play in.

The ND agreement with the ACC merely allows the scheduling of five football games a year with ACC schools in exchange for allowing them to park the rest of their sports in the ACC. The ND football team remains independent. Just like we are independent in football but have most all of our sports in the ASUN.

ACC was stupid to have anything to do with Notre Dame. John Swofford probably wears green pajamas to bed every night. ND sometimes denies real ACC teams the opportunity to win ACC championships. VT , Boston College and Miami should have led a charge to keep ND out of ACC
