Freeze talks about telling JR "I hope you don't think I'm going to recruit a bunch of angels". His reply was "My dad would have loved you." He went on to explain that he is looking for kids who are willing and able to adjust to the environment and become better men because of it.

It'll be interesting how that plays out. Personally, I'm fine with it. But the fan base didn't love when Rocco did that so we'll see how they respond to Freeze doing it. If he wins, most won't care.

The fan base was fine with it for the most part but then the Asa situation happened and the tide begin to turn. It is a delicate balance that HF will have to deal with but it isnt like everybody Gill recruited were saints so it's nothing new.

Despite my take that he will make this a short stop after he rebuilds because that's what he does.
I am all in on building up fallen angels and going bowling.
Hope this family falls in love with Lynchburg.
Most of our recruiting will come from down south cause that's who he relates with the best.
And, he still does not know what he talent wise. Heck, this guy has had to adapt on the fly with early signing and now trying to get his guys.
Sell the 5 P5 games per year and add in less fan pressure could be ideal for a few guys. He was also quick to note some guys may want to play right away ---- makes me feel he has some idea what he has talent wise.
About an hour before broadcast they were advertising HF coming in and is now coaching an FCS school. I had to tweet them a correction and about 30 minutes later they did correct that on air. The brand needs to get out there.

I too have no problem with open recruiting and hoping kids not only grow to be better men, but grow to find salvation if they do not have it. My problem comes with 1) double standards between average students and athletes and 2) not disciplining/teaching when disciplining/teaching needs to happen. No reason we can’t have standards held across the board and disciplining/teaching happen when it needs to imo. I trust the coaches and other people in their lives at LU to disciple them and find the balance of truth and love after they show up.

Loved the radio show interview. Hugh is a great pitchman to recruit, motivate and sway a majority of players, fans and alumni. I believe he will win 7 to 8 of the games scheduled for the 2019 season; have another strong season in 2020 and eventually leave before the start of 2021 if a Power 5 comes a knocking. Short term it’s a win-win both parties. For Freeze it will be the redemption tour with wins over FBS team and for Liberty the ability to say that we can be a destination for star football coaches and student-athletes. My only fear is the possibility that Hugh and company will cut corners to get top rated players and have the NCAA hitting the school with sanctions.

If you look at the past it can give you a glimpse into the future.

Gill mastered the "delicate balance", was making a difference in players lives, and gave us a 6-6 transition season. Freeze has big shoes to fill.

Once HF gets past the tight deadline he has faced with this years class and starts to get into his normal recruiting schedule for 2020 and 21, I think he will be pleasantly surprised to find out how many really good players there are out there who will fit right in from day one. Mix in some who may have some rough edges but are sincere about working on them, and I believe he can upgrade our talent without bringing in a bunch of "bad dudes" Art Briles style.

Another interesting bit- When talking about recruiting and playing a P5 schedule he said that every team in a conference is playing (meaning the goal is a bowl) for a bowl game with the exception of the one who is the conference champion, “and I believe in time we’ll be in one of those too...”. Foreshadowing a move to a conference in the next handful of years or just referring to LU not remaining Indy for eternity?

For the record, the school lets in plenty of non-athlete students who don't fit into our norms. We have had students who were open about their Muslim faith and certainly plenty who were either agnostic or outright atheist. My thought has always been if someone is willing to come to a school where we can pour the Word into them for several years then I don't see a massive downside. Plenty of football players over the years have accepted Christ once they were on campus.

It should also be noted that the epicenter of Coach Freeze's recruiting efforts are squarely in the middle of the Bible Belt. Back when we were angling for Sun Belt membership, I kept pointing out that culturally we really are a great fit for the Evangelical base in the Gulf Coast Region from Florida to Texas. Our views are not as out of line with the mainstream in Missisippi and Alabama as they are in Massachusetts or California. When we talk about faith being the core of our mission, most of these kids get it even if they aren't all in. That is a big reason why Dabo has been so successful in his recruiting.

To TH Spangler and Oldflame's points, we need to make sure once we get them on campus they are being shared and shown the Gospel in action. Coach Gill walked the walk regardless of your opinion on his coaching. Coach Freeze and his staff needs to do the same or all we are doing is bringing talent who will view Christianity as hipocrisy. That would be damaging to all parties at the most importat level even if we are bowling every season.

My dorm was a melting pot of those that didn't adhere to the evangelical system. An open Muslim, an open Rastafarian, an open Roman Catholic, an open Chinese Communistic Atheist. The Muslim wound up getting saved, the Rastafarian was arrested and kicked out for drug use, not sure whatever happened to the Roman Catholic, the Chinese atheist went on to grad school at Harvard and I'm not sure what happened to him either.

Hopefully the kids Freeze brings in will be smart, adjust to the system, play great football, and most importantly come to know Christ if they don't already.

As would I but I think he did a much better job of doing that in this interview than he has in past interviews. Whenever he is interviewed by these types of shows there are going to be tons of questions that are more personal in nature and I would assume that will continue until we are a few games into the season.

He mentioned how he is a builder and he likes being places 5 to 7 years. If that is the time table in which we have him on the mountain then I would be very satisfied with that.

He did say that he struggled with his own name as an idol. That takes some enormous self reflection to identify and admit.
