For the 2021 schedule: We get an in-state FBS opponent which is always good thing to have on your schedule. Not only that we get an FBS team who will be off all NCAA penalties, Troy is Troy(a perennial top 2 team in Sun Belt and a team who seems to almost crack the top 25 at some point), Syracuse, who seems to be headed in the right direction aka Top 25 this year, Army is consistently winning and oh they lost to OU by 7 this year. As long as Clark is head coach at UAB, he will have them gunning for conference championships and right there about to crack the top 25. Personally, I like our 2021 schedule for it being our 4th FBS season. 10 years from now, sure I would like more prominent programs on the schedule.

2021 is a daunting schedule and I hate it IF it is the model we gravitate toward moving forward. We put these schedule together on the fly and Ian did a fantastic job in the amount of time he had. We go from 4 P5 down to 2 - that worries me that the vision is to get 6 wins and be bowl eligible every year. Hoping it is a blip based on circumstance and the other incomplete schedules fill in with P5. 2019= Even at 4 P5 ( still not enough for better recruits etc ) we will have a tougher schedule than UCF and theoretically would go to playoff before them if undefeated. By the way, I am predicting 2019 we will be very competitive based on our Senior class - we go 2&2 against our 4 P5 opponents...

Is the “vision “ to be bowl eligible or to play P5 teams?

Both
Yes - and you win 2-3 of the P5 and 5-6 of the G5 games and you get both, while bringing in much higher talent level than if you just play 2 P5 teams with G5 recruits...Way more national recognition and abillity to retain a staff as a Destination job vs a career enhancement job for P5 offer. Conferences treat us like BYU as a P5 opponent on their schedule and IF we have a great year we are in the mix unlike a G5.

Ok. It’s good to define expectations
When you say P5’s are you talking basement level P5’s? Wake Forest etc? Or are you thinking the top tier P5’s like Oklahoma Clemson etc?
Do you feel that LU is in a position to be competitive against those schools at this moment? If not, when do you see that happening?
Are you aware of the scheduling difficulties that BYU has?
If your “vision” is to play 5-6 top tier P5’s schools and LU looses them they won’t get to a Bowl. And recruiting will suffer, how would you balance that to ensure you go to a Bowl Game every year if you find the 2021 schedule unacceptable?

Do you get more publicity being Boise State/UCF/Baylor (pre-Big XII)/TCU (pre-Big XII) and playing a G5 schedule with 9 wins and an occasional P5 win or by being 6-6/7-5 against a harder schedule?

Jonathon if you throw a solid Bowl Game in, I’d like to take Option A please.

I would agree with Option A with the bowl game, hence UCF. Although if we can get a highly improved defense and rejuvenated offense, then I wouldn’t mind playing 3-5 P5’s on our schedules(ex: VT,UVA,Pitt, SU,BC,Wake or UNC).

That's why I think this whole play every P5 conference thing is absurd. Give me those examples or App currently any day of the week and I'll be thrilled. I want to be FBS and win 8-10 games each year against FBS teams. Who those FBS teams are doesn't matter to me as much as if we can beat them or not.

Although I would like most of those games will be against teams who are projected to be better than us (top G5’s and a few P5’s that we can make a H-H deals with)

Then 2021 schedule is perfect for that. IF you want to be a G5 level bowl team with max wins and that is your goal - don’t schedule 4 P5 teams - cap it at two and be a nice little G5 regional team that no one outside of Lynchburg cares about. I would like to hear it from our Admin what the goal is.

LOGIC hath returned. Haize, you better be ready.

Independent >

I told anyone on this board that would listen all those years ago that FBS Indy would TRUMP FCS playoffs (playoffs? Playoffs??) and sure enough - I LOVE our Indy schedules. Coastal and Georgia Southern needed a conference. We need nothing of the sort. You (We) can go our own way. Sing it with me Haize!

Can’t you do both?

Get to being that good G5, aspire for UCF.

Then, take the next step. People like you are talking about UCF to the Big 12. They got there by being really good at the level beneath it.

It’s really hard to skip steps.

I don’t think it is even close - P5 dwarfs eyeballs and publicity of any G5 win. How many people heard about us beating Troy vs Baylor - how many viewers for both games.

Folks know about UFC and they don’t play 5-7 P5’s. Also, we also need to add that a P5 conference also will make a study which includes academia, possibly student body population, most likely includes politics(always does in some way),etc. The only possible option we’d have is maybe the ACC based on academia, location and possibly a respecatable sports teams. I would say some of our Olympic sports already play ACC teams, but football and basketball will need to step up their game. With that being said, we need to win a lot and clearly we see UCF doing well with the schedule that they play which is mostly G5’s. Once we can prove ourselves highly as a top G5 and benefit on recruiting top players for our classes, then we can push for more P5’s on the schedule.

My question was focused on the next step. The idea that we can jump from Big South to P5 equivalent without building a successful program first is what my argument is again.

Like you said - you can’t skip steps.

By then, one can hope that the majority of our players are FBS-3 star or more caliber athletes.
