Church is not the place to "dress down" to be of the world. Many church musicians dress as if the are playing in a night club, rather than church.
A coat and tie are human standards. The Lord wants our best of us, not necessarily our clothes. What we wear should serve to show modesty, and as John said not to draw attention to ourselves.

I would say that most of us have probably only worn a coat and tie to church for holidays, weddings, and funerals.

You wouldn't have liked either church i went to growing up then Jon...and probably wouldn't have much liked my family. I still wear them sometimes but i have taken to dredsing down a lot more...usually a button down and khakis or dress pants, unless i have to work...which leads to another big change in my life the last few years, and that is opening up Sunday to get hours for work

We need to remember that we are the church, not a building. So no building is holy or requires a certain dress code. Those who advocate for suit and tie is all well and good so long as you go out of your way to welcome someone who walks into the building who’s not dressed as you prefer. You never know that person may be too poor to afford a suit and tie or it may be their first time in a church ever so we need to love everyone who walks into our churches regardless of dress. What someone wears to church is nothing more than legalism and preference as Jon said. So let’s just make sure we do everything we can to be welcoming to all who come through the doors.

The thing I love about my church is it really doesn't seem to matter what people wear. We have people in suits, we have people in polo and khakis and we have people with jeans and a t-shirt.

I have never felt anybody is judging anybody by what they wear and the result has been a church that has a collection of older people, younger people and everybody inbetween. I have always wanted to be part of a church that somehow managed to reach people of all ages and am glad I am part of one that does.

The church I go to is similar. Add in multi-cultural and multi-racial and it's one of the things that makes me so glad to be where we're at.

yeah, it is really refreshing. I love being able to bounce thoughts off of older men in our congregation. Was able to see that first hand when my wife and I went to the small group leader training. The diversity in age and race of the leaders was great and really helps in perspective.

How am I just now seeing this thread... That was a very interesting read thank you all. my 2 cents not that anyone cares. Jon and I went to school at the same time so I tend to lean in his direction on most of this. Music: I want to clarify, were they just playing the beat or were they playing lyrics that were bleeped out? that is a huge difference in my opinion. Dress: Working in athletics for 11 years now and 4 different schools attire has always been regulated for full time staff and in 3 of the 4 places the entire stadium staff whether full time or just working the gameday stuff like stadium workers. I think that is something that should be addressed if It hasn't already because you represent your university as a worker and should be dressed professionally. I wear nice khaki golf shorts on game day because of the line of work i'm in. The coaches and other staff wear slacks. Most people in stadium operations have similar uniform guidelines. As for the students, I hated the dress code when I was there. We finally convinced the admin to let us wear sandals but I still had to walk from the circle to north campus in pants when it was 95 degrees in august. I get that some people think you should look professional in the class room and to some extent I agree. Heck we had to get special permission from Jr. when we went shirtless and painted up for hockey games. (RIP shirtless 7) The more rules we had in place the more I wanted to break them which is why I moved off campus after my sophomore year. The curfew is ridiculous on campus. Some of my fondest memories were going to sheetz at 3 am after studying and eating their fajitas. Part of the college experience is making mistakes and learning from them. I made mistakes in college. but I learned from them and I had a support system around me at he university that encouraged me in the right direction.

Add to that a church that unashamedly teaches the whole Bible and you got something going on.

“Don’t be a distraction.”

“Don’t dress to draw attention to yourself.”

These sentiments seem to address the issue of immodestly dressed men or women head-on. Whether you’re dressing yourself specifically for sexual appeal or to
Impress your friends, you’re still doing it to draw attention to yourself. I’m glad it seems most on here say that would be wrong.

It seems most here would agree there should be some kind of dress code at LU, the issue is just where to draw that line. I figure there will always be debate about that.

If a young woman is dressed the way that was originally discussed (“booty shorts”, “Daisy Dukes”, etc.), should the University spend that much time wondering if it’s to impress friends or draw attention sexually? Like FFG said, college is partly about making mistakes. And the support system should be in place to positively encourage young women making that mistake to dress differently.

What I meant is that i went to churches where you pretty much had to wear a shirt and tie.

You're taking what I said completely out of context. I wouldn't say drawing attention to yourself is wrong at all in most settings.

In a church setting, where the focus should be on Jesus and worshiping him, you shouldn't be a distraction or draw attention to yourself.

When you're going out and having fun, by all means draw attention to yourself if that's your thing. That could mean being the center of the conversation at dinner or the best dressed in a friend group. I don't think either of those things is wrong.

Or the support system should be in place to positively encourage young men to take their thoughts captive and not sexualize everything.

But hey, that would be too "modern".

Not to be argumentative but lets not pretend modesty isn't a idea not covered in the bible but my issue comes when men bring up the way women dress and then blame the women on their own shortcomings when it comes to their thought life.

Fact
It is a lot easier for a Christian young lady to control her wardrobe and make some relatively modest choices when she gets dressed than it is for an 18-23 year old male to control his thoughts when she chooses to put on something revealing because it´s ¨cute¨. That´s just selfish and irresponsible IMHO. There are plenty of temptations out there in the world without having to deal with unnecessary ones from their sisters in Christ.

thepostman wrote:My church certainly does that. I wouldn't attend a church that didn't. I probably should have lead with that.
Yeah I was thinking you went to a church I was familiar with and knew that. That's why I stated that. Seems often that people look at that as an afterthought when choosing a church.

Oh I know it's covered in the Bible. And I think it should be taught in the context of discipleship making relationships.

My issue is when we put all the focus on the woman making the change and never, ever, ever, ever, ever bring up the fact that guys need to control their thoughts better than they do. I'm all for both approaches, but until someone mentions both of them together, I'm going to continue bring up the other side as well.
