Since I'm going to be spending a few days in Lynchburg coming up ina few weeks, I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on where I should be taking my family to eat. I'm familiar with all the chain restaurants, But I'm more interested in any places that are uniquely Central Virginian or maybe some on-campus options that might open during spring break (which I highly doubt).

If you suggestions for DC or points further up I-95 you can chime in as well.

I was happy w/ the Lynchburg Ale House (withing walking distance of the back entrance to campus by the RR crossing) and SCAR took us over to some place w/ a 19' Top hat on the front. Right at the intersection of Candlers Mt Rd and the old GE bldg (north campus) in that new (well, new to us) shopping center.

Those were both ok for kids as far as I could see- I would've taken mine there w/ no problems.

In DC the best Asian restaurant in the world is PF Changs (it's a chain too, but you'll never have better)

Agreed..PF Changs is very good...there's one in Charlotte that I've been to.

I really don't know how you guys eat that stuff (Chinese/Asian). This as I'm wolfing down another Tastykake and coffee. (I won't even try to explain Tastykake, if you don't get that one ask SCAR)

I could live on Italian though- had a great chicken parm sandwich w/ provolone on a kaiser at that Top Hat place. Now I'm getting hungry again. Great

There's a place up off of 501 called Monte Carlo that's a good Italian place. Go past the turn for LC and it's on the left.

There's also a good Mexican restaurant not too far from the school. I'll give ya directions if you want.

The Chophouse is now T-bone Jack's.

If you like Mexican, La Carreta is your place on Timberlake Rd.

The Texas Inn is still around if you like cheeseburgers with egg on it and toothless folk cooking it in a rough atmosphere. I'm sure you've been there though.

Lynchburg has a 5 Guys. That is probably the best burger you'll ever have. ever.

I haven't eaten at La Carreta. The place I know is Talaquepaque or something like that.

5 guys is down in that plaza where Target and Dick's is. (Can we say Dick's on this board?) They're popular up near DC. It's kinda expensive for a burger but it's not someplace you're gonna go every week. Expect to spend like $8 for a burger, fries and a drink. It's a big burger though. La Caretta is over on Timberlake. A little bit down the street from Lowe's. Actually, it's right accross the street from Putt Putt.

Huge fan of the Texas Inn (aka Tea Room). You couldnt get near that place after 11:00 PM on the weekends. I could really go for a cheesy all the way, no relish, and a bowl (chili). I think it was the sweat and hair that made the food.....

BTW - there was a Kyoto's Japenses Steakhouse by Kroger on Wards Rd that was really good, but we really liked the Japenese take out place in the same shopping center as Mudpuppies. Also, is Boodles still in Lynchburg? Great atmosphere and good food.

family fare, try macado's by LU or the classic billy joes. if just you and mrs sly, try main street eatery downtown, isabellas, or meriweathers. i have nor visited neighbors yet, but i have not heard anything bad.

I went on a date there once and was greeted with $20+ per plate prices and froo froo looking food. They had great cheesecake though.

all those little hibatchi places with the yum yum sauce were the best places for hibachi. is that one eatery by school that had like 50 deli sandwhiches liek the "sinatra" and stuff like that still there...they had good grub

la hacienda is decent but i know the waitresses we always had were that one word...

Forgive a little Texan arrogance, but I don't eat Mexican in Virginia. I used to go to La Carreta back in the day on Timberlake after a movie at the old Fort Theatre. In fact I used to voice their TV commercials.

Yeah, we are travelling Griswold-style across the continent with my wife's parents along for the ride. So family-friendly is a key.

I like the way you think as far as suggestions though. This '5 Guys' sounds like it is worth a try. I love a great burger. So if Scar can provide the name & location of the Top Hat place, I'm interested.

As for PF Changs (and their Pei Wei Cafes), we have them all over Houston and they are great. But I'm hoping to try some things I can't get in Houston.

As for Tastykakes, they're overrated.

Definitely Mudpuppies for wings. Blows BWs out of the water. Better service too. (And cheaper beer for those so inclined.)

I love a BLT at the Cavalier up by Randy-Mac WC. Also a fan of the Depot Grille in downtown. Saw Rocco hosting recruits there a couple of weekends back.

Good Taste on Timberlake is pretty decent for Chinese. Five Guys is to die for. Best burgers ever.

Agreed with Sly on Mexican food out here. After you have the authentic stuff in the southwest like I did in Arizona, it's hard to eat it anywhere else.

I think the Japanese takeout place someone mentioned is Osaka. Go down 501 north and go past the turn for LC and it's on the right, right across from the Italian place I was talking about.

I think I remember the Cavalier up on Boonsboro Road. I used to work for a radio station up in that part of town.

It sounds like Mudpuppies is getting a groundswell of support. I admit I am somewhat jaded by the millions of wings places these days. But if it is that good, it might worth a try.

We used to have them in Ohio when I was a kid. They were OK but nothing to get excited about.

But its all a matter of individual taste. Now I admit I'm jonesing for a real Philly Cheesesteak when I head up the coast in March. We have pretty good ones down here (particularly at Texadelphia). But you guys in Philly know how to do it right. Much like Cincy knows chili. I'm dying for some GoldStar or Skyline right now.

the owner of main street is a good friend of mine, and the food may be pricey, but it is a quality place for fine dining, something lynchburg lacks. it was a mere suggestion for mr. and mrs. sly for a quiet evening out in a great setting.

I like O'Charlies (not to be confused with Charlies, which isn't bad, either).

But kids eat for free at O'Charlies, and they actually support the Big South...actually had some kind of video game contest there with people playing as Liberty on March Madness for the playstation II last year, they also had contests at all of the other Big South Schools that had a Charlies, and then the winners went on and played somewhere, and the overall winner got transportation and tickets to a final four game or something like that.
