It's not really a merge, more of an administrative agreement...

It gives assurance to any of the non-scholarship programs (and non-football programs that may add a team in the future) already in the A-Sun that they have a conference home if they ever become a scholarship program.

It allows the Big South to leverage the A-Sun's desire to possibly add D2 schools that have football in order to benefit Big South football, without having to commit to bringing in a D2 team from Alabama or far-off Georgia for all sports (and gives the A-Sun the ability to offer a football home to those schools, which it couldn't guarantee before).

It formalizes what was already happening between the two leagues anyway without drastically changing either league.

I'll take opening mouth inserting foot for 500 alex. that being said, there is chatter out there that some of the G5 conferences as well as the big 12 are expanding and the G5's don't seem to want to wait around for the dominos to fall from above. However, I doubt we make the move. we've seen this same dog an pony show before.
