Did you happen to hear his stats from the scrimmage the other day ? 2 touchdowns in 4 attempts or something like that. That indicates he does at least a decent job reading coverage. When a player comes in with high expectations, and by all accounts his performing well on the field in camp, especially at QB, we do not have to poke holes in his game , just so we are not embarrassed if he does not pan out.

Stats in a scrimmage do not indicate anything. That's ridiculous. Talk to me when it's 3rd and 10 with 2:30 to go in the 4th and we're trailing Jacksonville State by 6.

How do you think most players STICK on a team in the NFL, and I use them because there are only "preseason" games to show what you have, in college that's ALL you have is the "scrimmages" and IDC if you are 2-4 and those 2 are TD's then that my friend is doing something, but hey what do I know

How on earth can you type an evaluation like that as if it was a stone cold fact when Calvert has only been on campus 3 weeks and practices are closed You have been hyping Yearick a lot I really have no problem with that, especially since he seems like such a great kid and so on board with the Liberty mission Everything I am hearing from other sources is that Calvert is the superior talent and despite the edge Rud got from being there for Spring practices Buckshot has looked better this Summer

The decision on who will be redshirted will not necessarily be based just on who is the second best QB after Masha I suspect if Yearick is chosen to be the backup this year it will have a lot to do with him being somewhat more similar to Masha in his ability to run and thus less of an adjustment for the offense I suppose they may also factor in wanting to save that year of eligibility for Calvert down the road, although I don't really like it Because of factors like these, it's quite possible Buckshot could actually have the edge, but get the shirt if the competition is close It's also possible that the coaches could think Calvert is clearly better, but still start out redshirting him and hope and pray Masha stays healthy Yearick could be the mop up guy or run a series or 2 if Stephon gets nicked Then, if Masha has a serious injury, all bets are off and you decide if you want to stay with Rud or burn the shirt That's a bit of a risky way to go, and the decision gets harder the later you get in the season

That's fair skepticism from your first paragraph. I imagined I would receive some backlash from it and I accept it.

The second paragraph is exactly the point I was raising. That's the big question. You have Calvert who is further along than Yearick from a talent standpoint, but run a system that works better for Yearick. Talent development wise, Yearick would benefit the most from a Redshirt.

My guess is its a combination of factors, including the fact that Yearick is more of a "dual threat" than Calvert...if you go back over his highlight film, He uses his legs but more for the purpose of creating an opportunity to make a pass than to actually gain yardage. Yearick, while he uses his legs to create opportunities in the passing game, they are also a weapon in and of themselves, and in an uptempo style of offense, having a QB that can move the sticks running and throwing is a very nice asset to have...it gives the defense something else to think about as well. They can't just stack the box to stuff the run and pin their ears back and rush the QB, because when the play breaks down, he can either scramble and create another opportunity for a receiver to come open down the field for a pass, or he can tuck the ball and turn a 3 or 4 yard loss into a 10-15 yard gain (or longer). Not to mention, with his (Yearick's) running ability, Dailey can call designed QB runs much like they will be calling for Masha as the starter.

As a coach, you should understand the importance of not putting too much emphasis on one player or overhyping their abilities. Especially, as you note, when neither one of them have played a down in an LU uniform.

Also, consistency is everything in practice because it should translate to the game. "Stats" aren't always the tell all, but when there is consistent play there are consistent stats. Take a small sample size with a grain of salt, but if that small sample size is repeated then that tells you what you need to know. Forbidden should know this better than anyone, right?

The reason I can do that is because I do NOT coach at LU, so I for the most part don't have to be PC, they do. All I'm going to say is that if you choose to believe its close then do so. Yes, consistency is key, and even your HC is giving you what he can in saying that the kid has been more consistent, and that's after coming in after the fact with no spring ball. You say take the sample size with a grain, but how many scrimmages do they really get to go all out, and show what they can do. Don't matter all will be resolved in the next week

Agreed about being bloodthirsty for the season to start. Cannot get here fast enough.

HCTG is going with giving Rud more time to develop, which makes perfect sense.

Forbidden, shame on the players if they are not going "all out" during these scrimmages. I'm talking with something to prove, not talking about taking each others heads off. Big difference.

Also, I am not aware of any LU coaches on this board and I would be shocked if anyone outside of those with media credentials have spoken to any of them - especially about this topic. Glad the competition is over for now though. Allows everyone to accept their roles and focus in on their job for the season.

I would say that if they actually give Calvert any significant PT, it will probably be in a package where they hustle him out there in a 4 or 5 wide set and have him air it out, then come right back with Masha and a more run and option approach that uses his skills, all with no huddle and fast paced Pure speculation of course I never took a coaching class like BJ

There's a very good chance it will be exactly the opposite, but I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Manson's cryptic revelation will have something to do with the coaches not wanting to use Masha anywhere other than QB as long as he is the starter, which the more I think about it would probably be the smart thing to do

Why would you try to make an immobile QB mobile? Especially a bootleg? How'd that work with Marino?

I am stoked about this QB lineup! Plan on going to scrimmage Saturday and see for myself. I know there is a lot of hype about Calvert, but I really think he complements Masha well based on what I've heard and seen. With Masha developing his passing game and the speed already being there, having the threat of Calvert's arm in the "batter's box" is going to make for what I think will be a potential headache for our opponents.

Dailey proving he can be pretty cryptic himself, but the jist of it seems to be that, at least for a little while, it will be "Masha, Masha, Masha" No real plan to get snaps for Buckshot

Love this quote from Gill about Masha “He knows how to uplift the others around him by his play,” Gill stated. “When he gets on the football field his body language uplifts the spirit of those around him.” That would be refreshing

Very encouraging to see that indeed. Masha had a confidence about him, even when he started those games in 2014.

Maybe people will start listening to what I say after those quotes from Gill/Dailey and not call me delusional.
In summation of what I've been saying:
Masha is significantly better than anyone else we have on our roster.
Calvert was better prepared for the level of competition due to his background.
Redshirting Yearick was the best decision to help him develop into the D-1 speed of the game.

Also, Jones is no Swanson. The kid can play. Will he play in a game, unlikely, but "the receivers are not disappointed when Jones steps up to throw in practice".
