Did I miss something--where did Swanson go?

All we know is he is no longer on the roster The guy devoted 3 years to the team as a walk-on I'm pretty sure he never took a snap, and it likely would have been the same story this year I suppose he decided it was time to concentrate on finishing his degree and get on with his life

When was the last time we ever had a true Fr. ready to start from day one? You're kidding yourself, or have never played/coached the position, if you are discounting Yearick's early enrolling doesn't help him have an advantage over Calvert.
Also, (I can't believe I'm saying this) I agree - to an extent - with Beej. I would much rather have someone who can tout his ability to read a defense and throw 10-25 yards with pinpointed accuracy than someone who "can throw a 65 yd bomb on a rope". If the latter has the former's ability as well, then great. But we won't know that for a while still. So yes, Yearick has a jump on Calvert because he was here 4 months sooner, practiced with the team and started learning the system.

Also also, you're kidding yourself if you're actually calling a true Fr., who hasn't stepped foot on the field yet, a "star". I was a star QB in high school too. I had a cannon. I also threw more TDs than Calvert our Sr. years of HS. I am also, not playing in the NFL.

Pls stop thinking because you are the team "captain" that has earned you something great. As was learned over last couple years the person holding that position last was maybe not the best regarded for that spot. Just have a feeling that the person there now will be a little different than the last.

Again, substance helps.

Also, being named a team Captain does mean something. It means you have gained the respect of your teammates/coaching staff, proven yourself on the field and are able to lead by example off the field.

That is not to say past Captains haven't had a sense of entitlement and allowed their egos to get in the way of their on field/off field performances.

In addition, we have FR Brandon Tillman, who is expected to play Safety, but was starting QB for his HS team, throwing for 1500 yards and running for 900 more last year We will have no lack of options in the event of emergency

No, again your wrong (IMO) your whole first sentence is wrong, otherwise the "captain" last year would not have been, so really you answered your own substance question yourself.

Just think from a coaches perspective for a second here. If Yearice who as you say enrolled early has the spring practices and the spring game under his belt, do you find it even a little bit odd that he was only allowed to throw like 5 passes. If he had anything going for him throughout the month of practices I am POSITIVE you will see him throw more. I think the book was out on Swanson thats why he didn't get to throw a lot. So being here early only gives him the advantage of seeing things more, but the productivity on the field which is what counts, at this stage I would say is still even, as he did nothing to separate himself

The fact that Yearick was there early is what he had going for him. The fact that he got to throw with the WR, learn the playbook and see the speed of the game before Calvert is what he has going for him. That, by definition, gives him an advantage over Calvert. I'm not saying Yearick is #2 on the depth chart, I'm simply saying he has an advantage to be #2 over Calvert because of the reasons I have listed multiple times.

Also, you are basing your captain argument on one captain during one season. I have to seriously question your experience with the sport if you truly believe being a captain means nothing. The leaders on the team and the best players are the ones who are the captains. They are the ones chosen to represent the team as a whole, which is why it is worth noting. Again, re-enforcing the fact that Masha will be our starter from day one til the end of the season (barring any injuries). There is no true "QB competition" for the #1 spot this season.

I do know this actually. So let's settle at this, being a captain and having a player playing for the team hold the same weight.

*The point I'm making is that it is not delusional to think being a captain means something for a 1st yr starter. Additionally, it does not mean nothing to have coached a player who is on the team. There is something to be said for both.*

Ive said this before, but its been my stance from day 1...If he (Calvert) shows himself to be significantly better than Masha (regardless of captaincy), I would have no problem with him being the starter for us.

If he can make those 5 yard checkdowns, can hit a bubble screen that won't lead to a 5-7 yard loss, can throw a WR open on a medium post route, has the forethought to put the ball in the first couple rows instead of trying to make the Sportscenter Top 10 throw into triple coverage, and can drop a deep ball into a receiver's arms instead of overshooting him by 5 yards, then I say, put him on the field...I will trust TG's judgement either way though.

I think we are all on the same page with this. Same can be said about Yearick. Neither will happen and that is the debate.

Thing is pretty...we aren't in live practice yet...Yearick and Masha haven't suited up since spring ball and Calvert has only worked essentially on the side since there have been no official practices. I do believe and always have that the starting job is Masha's to lose, but it doesn't mean that the other two have no shot at taking it from him.
