Other Virginia schools affected in this scenario are James Madison (to C-USA) and Richmond (to the Sun Belt).

While I am far from a fan of the SBC, that scenario would be amazing for us Not only do we get to the FBS, but we arrive to find 2 ready-made rivalries in our conference in Coastal and Richmond, with App St almost sure to become one if it isn't already However, last I heard, Richmond has little interest in moving up, and just a few years ago built a brand new stadium with a capacity of only 8,700 Looks like it should be expandable though, and unlike Coastal, they would have no problem paying for it

I like how he describes this as "the cleanest way it could shake out" when it potentially involves the complete elimination of an entire D1 conference (the one we currently compete in) The BSC would be left with just it's 6 non-football schools, and scrambling to find at least 2 more to maintain credibility 6 teams is just not enough for sports like basketball and baseball Trying to fill out a schedule with so few conference games would be almost as bad as being an independant

Yeah, he starts with a solid assumption including the UTEP transition. But then he appears to show a complete lack of understanding of FCS from that point forward. Non-scholie programs to the CAA? CSU?

You are correct that the Spiders have made it abundanctly clear that they want to stay FCS just like their rivals in Williamsburg. I applaud them for knowing who they are and where they should be.

Taking Richmond out of the equation would eliminate a travel partner for Liberty Whether it strengthened or weakened our position overall with the SBC would depend on who they looked to as an alternative

My dream would be to join CUSA and build a rivalry with ODU but when liberty athletics is involved only my nightmares come true.

As for ODU, VCU, Richmond, etc., I would not bother me if we never played or have anything to do with those schools. Same for Radford, JMU and Longwood. I simply do not care for them. Only 2 schools in the state I like are Liberty and Virginia Tech.

That's why you play them. It's called 'rivalry'. You don't play teams you like all the time
Do you think Auburn fans like Alabama fans?
Duke and Carolina?
Red Sox and Yankees?
Marshall and reading?

A little off topic, but I wonder if Bronco Mendenhall will regret his decision to move from BYU to UVA, if the rumors about BYU joining the BIG 12 are true. He had a pretty strong program there, and likely could have a justified a nice little pay increase with the change in conference.

Ask him in 3-4 years. My guess will be no.

If they get in the big 12 it will be a definite yes. It was common knowledge that that was a big reason why he was open to moving. He will probably be sorry for going to Uva either way unless he's the George Welsh of Uva football. There's a whole lot more all grohs and Mike Londons in Uva history rather than Welsh.

I just don't see JMU doing anything. This is a case where the athletic department wants to move up but the 75% of the administration has zero desire to leave the CAA. They certainly won't entertain anything from the SunBelt, and probably not the C-USA honestly. The MAC is the only conference that I believe has a legitimate to get JMU.

Someone is going to be taken from the FCS ranks you'd think. Who is it going to be? Who is the new school that will leapfrog us and be the most "FBS Ready" in the eyes of the SunBelt?

Is the default position that we don't stand a chance of being that school?

EKU. after them, they'll find another school before Liberty. Online education and politics especially after this year, won't get an invite anytime soon.

Some quotes:
Conference USA might not expand if it loses a member or two, or it could act quickly to get back to 14 schools, she said.

“We’ll have options” for expansion, she said, adding that she’s heard from several schools interested in joining the conference since last week. She wouldn’t name names, but James Madison, Texas State and Georgia State are among those thought to be on the short list.

“At this point, I wouldn’t hazard a guess as to what’s going to happen,” she said. “There are too many moving parts.”
