I would say that there is little correlation between GPA and being a smart basketball player. Marcus White has one of the highest basketball IQ's but his GPA was not worthy of the Dean's list. There are other guys that have high GPA's but can't run a play to save their lives. Playing basketball is like learning dance moves (not that I can dance like that). It is more about reaction and reading body language and understanding positioning. It doesn't take a smart person necessarily. It is more about instinct IMHO. Some of the smartest people I know in life have had low GPA's as well and some of the highest GPA folks I know couldn't think their way out of a paper bag. They know how to study, reguritate information and turn in assignments, but they never learned how to think and process info.

Scar:

If I remember correctly, Marcus had great instincts and superior athleticism. He was a high-major talent who fell our way after Texas lost interest due to his acedemic status. The downside was that he had to concede his freshman year because he was a prop-48, and he missed his senior season becasue he didn't maintain the minimum academic standard. So, If my memory serves me well, he only played two seasons due to academic issues.

His defining moment may have been a game in Blacksburg back around '96 with LU's near late season upset of a top-10 VA Tech team. As talented as he was, LU missed the NCAA's during both of his seasons here, in spite of the fact that both of those games were played in the Vines and he had a strong supporting cast that included Peter Aluma and Larry Jackson. I think that the biggest slap in the face was when we were dominated at home against CSU in the '97 final, despite the talent disparity which strongly favored LU. As it turned out, it was a game that Jeff Meyer would never recover from, and that game along with Marcus White's dismissal marked the begining of the end for Meyer.

Unlimited range!

Does that even mean anything? Does he make a defensive rebound and just shoot it?

It means he's like Lebron in those commercials where he makes the half court shots. Armon can do that too.

That's really not what it means at all. It's a term that is used all the time by scribes in describing a player, and "unlimited range" simply means that within the context of a half-court offense, any time that player has an open look they will have the green light because the shot is not out of their range. In college ball that would probably mean well outside the 3 point line, and perhaps beyond the NBA line if there is one.

I hope Armon isn't wasting too much time in the gym goofing around with 3/4 court jumpers. He needs to work on his post moves and getting in better shape.

I think he was joking. I also know what it means, but was just pointing out that it's a ridiculous term.

On the scout site, it states that he is a committ and has signed his LOI. How long before the Atheltic Department releases this info? I wonder what the plans are for him. Will he play right away with all the people we have in the backcourt? I know he will if he is good enough.

I agree with Scar on this. BUT, I would like to say this -- it's good to know that, with a high GPA, we don't have to worry about landing a high-quality recruit who won't be able to play for us because of grades. Such was the problem with Mel Hankinson's recruits.

Good point Ed...As far as Marco, we should have won that second bs Championship with that team. We were extremely talented but CSU had 3 players that played out of their minds including Orland Houroutenier who eventually played for a very good Puerto Rico team in the Olymics. He is still playing for them I believe and his team beat the USA a couple of summers ago (I think a lot of people beat us that summer though). That was in fact the last game Jeff Meyer (and Tim Scarborough for that matter) ever coached for Liberty.

Of course, it didn't help that Aluma barely touched the ball in the last 10 minutes of the game. I'll never understand why Marcus started jacking up 3's on a sprained ankle when we were up by 10.

Wow Lib, you were definitely there. I would have to look at the tape though but it did seem like Aluma got iced out and then we all went cold. I have never looked at the game tape of that game yet. I want to at some point though. I wonder if 10 years is enough time to heal that wound :o. I won't put it all on Marco but we should have been more poised when they made a run at us. We were better than them and we were better than that.

I was at that CSU game as well and you guys brought back painful memories, long repressed. :rainy

My recollection is that it wasn't just Marcus who got 3-happy, and Aluma definately did NOT touch the ball for long stretches of time as CSU was closing in and taking the lead.
