According to the stat sheet, Hiepler also got a start last night, dished out 3 assists in 20 minutes, and did not attempt a shot. Was this kid a walk-on?

Yes, he is a walk-on. It's a bit of a :dontgetit that he has been starting. I can only surmise it has more to do with team dynamics and what he does in practice, etc., because he certainly hasn't been a huge difference maker in-game. For me, an even bigger :dontgetit is the very limited minutes Talbert has been getting. It looks like he has been reduced to being the guy who comes in and plays the post when Maxwell needs a rest and nothing more, when he has been one of the most productive players on the team per minute played. No surprise that Atencia is the guy losing most of the minutes with Dawson now in the rotation. DNPCD last night.

Or it could have been his ability to defend the Princeton offense in practice. I doubt this an indicator of future starts.

Sly, I think Hiepler started a game or two prior to the Princeton game as well.

Yes. This was either his second or 3rd start. Ritchie obviously likes something about him, and perhaps it also is a motivational thing for guys like Kemrite and Reid. Homesley also started, but IMHO that was justified by how he has performed in-game when given the opportunity. He also passes the "eye test" as a long, athletic swing player with a pretty versitile skill set.

Maxwell and Dawson on the floor was a thing of beauty. Maxwell was able to get the ball and score in many ways besides trying to score on a triple team.

JD came out the gate firing and scored the first 7 points and probably would have went for 25 if not for 2 cheap fouls which forced him to miss the majority of the first half.

He will be a max minutes guy and honestly Liberty needs him on the floor. If he didnt play the Princeton would have probably won by alot more. The refs called alot of horrible calls against liberty which led to 38 free throws. Its hard to beat a team who gets 60% of their total points from the line.

I dont really like Cabbil at the point because he over dribbles and turns it over too much (Dawson had turnovers also but he hasnt played in over a year). But he brings what Fields doesnt which is a legit threat to score. Feilds doesnt turnover as much but hes not a good shooter so RMk played the better of the two which was Cabbil.

AC Reids minutes especially in crunch time were cut.

Antencia DNP hes shorter in person than he is on camera I dont know if he can be effective at this level.

Is Cabbil or Hiepler playing the majority of minutes at the point?

Hiepler plays the 2 and seems to contribute by playing decent D and passing to the open man. He tends to pass even when he may have an open shot. Cabbil does play the 1 at times (started there against Princeton) but is better suited for the 2 especially for shooting purposes. It seems obvious that McKay is rewarding hard work while sending a message to the former starters that they need to up their game.[/quote]

Hiepler literally would not shoot the ball he would catch it and pass it all night and AC Reid cant create a shot for himself hes literally gotta be open to get a shot off.

Dawson created shots for himself and others. He and Cabbil played point but was like a place holder he just got the ball accross half court and then would pass it to others that ran the plays. I like Fields he has a nice handle and hes fast but he cant score.

The rise of Hiepler has been interesting. There must be more to the story. The situation reminds me of Ron Baker at Wichita State who went from walk-on to star. Maybe Hiepler's best performances are yet to come. Seems like Talbert could be used more effectively as a 4 playing at the same time as Maxwell. They could do some high-low post action. Talbert has a good mid-range jump shot. The Flames do not have anyone close to a true 5 except Maxwell. Talbert does battle hard defending the post, playing against guys who outweigh him by 40 pounds; but to only play him as a 5 when Maxwell needs a rest does not seem like the best option to help get the Flames a victory

He walked on to the team at the beginning of the year, but on the day of the open scrimmage at Vines(Homecoming) Coach McKay gave him a scholarship. He surprised his mom by telling her and the few fans that during the individual team introductions.

I can think of more accurate Walk-on stories that are a lot closer to home....
