Furman´s stadium seats 16,000, so that crown was pretty lame. There was a time the Paladins used to pack that place. Their program (and the entire SoCon for that matter) is definately not what it used to be.

Explain.

You can't be better than something that doesn't exist. The ACC only began in 1953. After the ACC was formed, the SoCon was never comparable with the ACC.

ACC members (1953):
Clemson
Duke
Maryland
UNC
NC State
South Carolina
Virginia
Wake Forest

SoCon members (1953):
George Washington
Richmond
William & Mary
The Citadel
Davidson
Furman
West Virginia
Washington & Lee
Virginia Tech
VMI

The use of the term better was a joke. The point was that the SoCon has a long and illustrious history which more recently had them winning multiple FCS championships with teams like App State, Georgia Southern, Marshall, and yes, Furman (Won in 88 and runner up in 85 and 01). It also should be noted that during part of the SoCon´s 1AA glory years, the ACC was almost totally a basketball conference, and in fact a lot of those SoCon championship football teams were probably better than the ACC bottom tier, so while ballcoach may have exagerated a bit, IMHO he wasn´t really that far off.

I believe this falls under "lies, damned lies, and statistics".

Saw some of this game. There weren't 10k people there.
You have to remember that this number does not only include butts in seats, but tickets sold (as long as it was at least a 1/3 of what it normally costs to enter).

There have been several times where SoCon teams played and beat ACC teams.

1983 Appalachian St. 27 Wake Forest 25
1983 Furman 17 Georgia Tech 14
1984 Furman 34 NC State 30
1985 Furman 42 NC State 20
1986 Furman 17 Georgia Tech 17
1987 East Tennessee State 29 NC State 14
1989 Appalachian State 15 Wake Forest 10
1991 Appalachian State 17 Wake Forest 3
1995 Appalachian State 24 Wake Forest 22
1998 Appalachian State 30 Wake Forest 27
1999 Furman 28 North Carolina 3
2000 Appalachian State 20 Wake Forest 16

That doesn't mean that the SoCon was "only a notch below the ACC."
