ok- a day later and still no one on here wants to touch this one.

so I will.

another "random" act of violence or symptomatic of a "thug mentality" not just in the NBA but in ALL PRO SPORTS?

Personally, I think today's pro athletes have a "me first" attitude - we've lost some of the TEAM concept. Question, or appear to question a guy's manhood and its ON now, maybe some years back a guy would let it slide and make sure his (and his teams') actions spoke for him.

Discuss.

and racist crap won't be tolerated in this thread- so no one start.

and I TRULY hope Isaiah isn't involved to this extent- either way I'm thinking he's gone before the end of the season, but it would be disappointing to see that he pulled a "Cheney"

It wouldn't of been such a big deal if they didn't roll into the crowd, that made it a bigger deal then it would've been....then there was Carmelo with his sucker punch, his own team should've beat the crap out of him after that one...Carmelo has always been a punk

is there a connection here to the overall age of these new break-out superstars?

What's Carmello- 20? maybe?

EDIT: ok, he's 22. (May 29, 1984 )

thank you NBA.com

I don't know, but the NBA needs to stop marketing punks....Lebron seems like a decent guy, so i guess he is alright, DWade is a good guy, another guy that needs to be out there more that will be great for the NBA is Dwight Howard, he is a good guy and will be a beast in this league for years to come...why the nba continues to market players like carmelo (i mean after that video with him in the drug dealers came out you would've thought that would be a warning sign), AI, and all the others maybe people will get a better idea of how things are....David Stern always shys away from saying anything negative about anybody, he doesn't come off as truely being against such actions...but the players union and espn are to blame as well i suppose

**EDIT** I think the huge worry is coming off as racist, but its not about race, its about some of the guys in the nba that are punks...but the race thing is an issue, which is sad

I will however say that for someone who hangs out with dealers in Baltimore making movies about killing snitchers, Anthony certainly deserves to put a skirt on. Dude punched a guy that wasn't expecting it and then immediatly runs away. What a sally.

Honestly, while the whole situation looks bad for the NBA, I was impressed that most of the players that were out there were trying to break it up...Everyone is quick to throw the 'thug' label at NBA players, and while the actions of a very few (ie. Nate Robinson and Carmelo) were thuggish, the teams as a whole did a good job of not letting the situation get out of hand. I can't understand why Mardy Collins got such a big suspension (yes, he had the flagrant foul to start it all, but when is a flagrant foul worth 6 games? He did nothing else during the fight to deserve anything worse than what the foul's punishment should have been). And JR Smith deserves a big suspension too, but he was doing a pretty good job of controlling himself after the initial cheapshot (yeah, he got in Collins' face, but most players would after that), but then got provoked into a bigger fight by Robinson's baiting.

I think the NBA has done a very good job of controlling violence in the league since the Detroit/Indiana incident (and the league didn't have a huge problem with fights immediately before that either). In any sport and at any level, something like this will happen from time to time (it happens in MLB, NFL, college football, NHL, college hoops, high school football, etc.), it is just interesting how when it happens in the NBA, it becomes bigger than it does in any other sport.
