"It is my understanding at the present time that the majority of our presidents and chancellors believe 10 is the right number for us," Bowlsby said. "There are those that believe we should get larger, and they feel strongly about it. There are those who believe we should stay at 10, and they feel strongly about it. And there are probably four or five in the middle who are persuadable one way or the other. And I think that's exactly where we're at."

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder is a member of the contingent that believes the Big 12 needs more teams.

"I have always favored the way it was at one time," Snyder said. "I favor a 12-team conference, I favor two divisions, and I favor a championship game."

We know Oklahoma and Kansas State want expansion. I wonder who those who feel strongly about staying at 10 might be?

The Sun Belt Conference is sitting on an 11-school membership entering the 2015 season. It is too late to add any new members to the fold now, but the conference is not going to close the book on the topic of expansion just yet. Right now though, the conference appears to have mixed emotions on expansion, and that could cause a stalemate.
Benson also noted the conference is more interested in staying within its geographical footprint. His comment about geography came up when asked about the possibility of New Mexico State joining as a full-conference member. New Mexico State and Idaho are each football-only associate members, rescued from the implosion of the WAC during conference realignmageddon. The geography statements would also suggest a school like UMass is without question out of the picture. The Minutemen will be going independent in 2016 as the final year of their relationship of the MAC is set for this fall.

It would seem the most likely way for Sun Belt expansion to move would be to welcome up another FCS program that fits the chemistry of the conference. Appalachian State, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, South Alabama and Texas State all did that in recent seasons on their way to the Sun Belt. Conference USA has gone the same way as well with UTEP, Old Dominion and now Charlotte.

"Any prospective team must be capable of being a full-fledged member (more on that later) and must fall within the conference’s footprint. That narrows the list considerably. The SBC already has moved on from considering James Madison and Liberty and is considering a list of other schools now."

I don't doubt that, but is this just speculation from a fish wrap?

Yes. The Sun Belt is doing nothing until the CCG deregulation matters settle. Both LU & JMU could be back on the radar in a heartbeat if needed. Right now, we are not.

On a somewhat related note, Britton Banowsky is resigning as CUSA commish. I'm not sure how that impacts our candidacy in that league. He seemed to be a bit of a supporter of our candidacy in a few media reports over the past year or so. But the odds of us joining that league remain very long.

If our men's bball team can get turned around and football continues an upward trajectory now that we've gotten over the playoff hump, we will be much more attractive to an FBS conference considering expansion.

The big issue here relates to the article bluejacket posted. Being the FBS bottom-feeders, the SBC is the most likely place to pull up teams from FCS. If they now believe we are outside of their footprint, then we do have a bit of a conundrum. Major moves by the Big 12 or drops like the one SJ mentioned are the only hope for us it would seem.

They genuinely don't like LU's money either, nor the source of it. Online education is still frowned upon by academic elitists, and that money would make us competitive VERY quickly.

Totally agree. Even forgetting about the source, the money is an issue. It stinks to high heaven, but the reality is, what we thought would be a huge asset going into this process has turned out to be a liability. The main reason the MAC won´t even give us a sniff is the fact that they have several schools who are struggling to make ends meet financially despite limited budgets and have facilities that don´t measure up to ours. It´s looking more and more like our only hope to get an FBS invite in the forseeable future is for some of those schools to fall victim to the economic realities of the rising cost of FBS football (including FCOA) and drop the sport like UAB, sans the alumni bailout.

The issue is moreso the money than it is the source. It's true that academic elites still harbor ill-will towards online learning, but with the rising costs of higher ed and the slashed budgets, many of the more pragmatic academics have begun to see the value of having a real online presence. Schools like UCF, FIU, Troy, LSU, etc. have all done this. I heard a commercial the other day on the radio for online education that covered some of the most important talking points every LUO phone agent discusses with prospective students over the phone, except the commercial was for Arizona State University. If more of the publics really make a push for online education and they figure out how to get away from the in-state/out-of-state model, we may just find ourselves wishing for the good ole' days when they were snooty and naive to the cultural/technological changes taking place in the education industry.

I agree with all of the recent posts. But I could suggest that if our mission was not so polarizing to university presidents then our financials wouldn't be considered such a detriment. But that is just a hypothesis. The combination of the two factors makes it impossible to prove. Grand Canyon only has moved up out of the WAC's desperation. But they are in the same boat for the most part moving forward.
