I'm not that shocked, really. The Big South has always been a decent baseball conference, some years almost putting three teams into the regionals back when Birmingham-Southern was a member (and before Winthrop's program took a dive)

If they were located in VA or northern NC rather than GA, I could see the BS extending an all-sport invitation to them to help balance out the Northern/Southern schools and replace VMI

Despite Radford' current lofty RPI, if Radford & Liberty lose the same amount of games the rest of the way, their final RPI's will be very close. Coastal is a different story. Their's could get much better.

Agreed LUDad...As I said above, Radford's RPI is boosted largely by the success of the other teams of the schedule. Binghamton, who Radford swept, took a game from Auburn, who swept Radford, which boosts their SoS. VMI, while they only have 14 wins on the year, has a win over #12 (at the time) Virginia. College of Charleston has wins over South Carolina, Indiana and Coastal Carolina, and is ranked in the polls as well which additionally gives Radford a boost.

Radford: 20
Coastal: 22
Liberty: 48
High Point: 68
Winthrop: 78
Campbell: 94

The others:
GWU: 224
Longwood: 179
CSU: 194
Presby: 142
UNCA: 182

Not a bad year for the conference. We'll need to win the tourney in order to make the regionals though.

Interetingly enough we still sit 44 in rpi and 59 in sos after yesterdays win. I still think we actually have an outside shot at an atlarge. The formula has to be to sweep hpu take 2 of 3 from ccu on the road beat maryland and probably have to make it to the championship game. Its a long shot but 2 of 3 from ccu is possible with the lyons and cole have thrown. 2 wins there would put us in the mid 30s and a high 40 sos. They key is that the next 4 are all on the road. 3 of 4 in those and were setting low 30s in rpi. Its a thin line but we actually have more of a shot than i thought after jmu.

I agree with jinxy. Hopefully our bats will come alive over the next 2 weeks. I think we have the pitching, not sure about hitting.

not to be Debbie Downer but I will...

we haven't hit all year, not likely to start now.

Toman teams tend to not break outta slumps quickly

Agreed. Thats why i said not likely. We havent really hit in 2 years. Pennington becoming a reliabe 4th starter is the only reason i mention it.

you are correct tho... our pitching has kept us in games the last 2 yrs

add CCU's power hitting and we'd been a lock

their HRs are ridic- like double anyone else in conf

We dont have enough d1 hitters. We dont have a single 2b that cant hit above .220. Our 3rd outfield spot behind perritt and shepherd is a dead spot. We certainly have 3 talented outfielders coming in that can hit and run. The juco 2b we just signed looks like he can swing the bat as well. Im cautiously optimistic that we will be a better hitting team next year. Problem is our rotation is a total guess with herndon coming off surgery and bean and stafford in disaray. Cole will probably get drafted so i wouldnt expect him back. This recruiting class is the best since perritt and closes class i think. I doubt we make it as an at large either but the path is there and with 4 solid starters we will have a chance to win every game. We never had a chance most midweek games due to poor starts.

Didn't I read somewhere that no team with an RPI under 40 didn't make the tournament last year? I really don't see where we can't get an at large if we finish strong.

Anyone else do a double take at Lyon's pitch count yesterday?

143...................... ouch! Get out the ice bags. Seriously, that's a lot for a pitcher who hadn't pitched major innings before this year.

I think thats right oldflame. The problem is theres 3 big south teams in the top 38. Weve just gotten 2 the last couple years. Id love to see all 3 of us get in. It only strengthens the profile of the league. Campbell beat number 23 cal last night as well i think. Were def still in this thing.

West Virginia was only team less than 45 that did not make field. They had losing conference record and faltered badly down the stretch. Last year SEC also had historic 10 bids. This year they are likely to be around their tipicall 8 bids, freeing up a couple of bids. Also ECU is a bubble team competing with us for a bid. Our 2 wins over them might be a deciding point.

The BSC is a pretty well respected baseball conference. I don't see 3 teams as being an issue. Technically, each team is supposed to be considered totally on their own resume' and the number of teams coming from their conference not considered at all, but we know it sometimes is.

Personally, I think if we take the CCU series we make the field with up to 2 loses the rest of the season. If we lose the CCU series I think we still have a chance to make the field with the 2 loses with a good showing in the tournament with a win or two over Radford and/or CCU assuming there are no tournament surprises in the top 10 conferences claiming available spots. This race for at large bids is setting up a lot like 2010 when the Southern Conference got 3 bids. Elon's ending rpi was 41 and record was 38-24. Other two rpi's were 26 & 32.

Radford and Coastal have probably already punched their tickets. Liberty's only shot is to win the tourney.
