Game time is 3:00 today. Senior night for James Johnson, Drew Smith and Ethan Layer.

Seeing that last name may make some people here happy, since Ethan has a year of eligibility remaining and a lot of you seem to think he isn't good enough for even a walk-on spot on the roster. He actually graduated last Spring and apparently wants to focus on finishing his Masters and/or getting on with his post-basketball life.

Hard to say Smith won't be missed after a game like he played against Radford, but I think it's fair to say he has been inconsistent and has never realized the potential his combination of size and athleticism seemed to promise. Gielo will almost certainly play a "stretch 4" role next year with Theo at the 3, so that should be an upgrade. JJ is another player who in 3 different programs never achieved a skill level to match his physical gifts. Between Maxwell and the 2 incoming Freshman bigs we can also be improved at the 5. With all guards probably returning, Dawson becoming eligible in January and the signing of Caleb Homesley, it would have been very hard to see any kind of a role for Layer, even for those of us who don't agree that he is all that bad. I do see Moller as a big ????. Wouldn't be a bit surprised if he doesn't return from Denmark.

Very good analysis. Also a good argument for DL to use

Thanks.

It could be, but the fact is all those potential positives are there regardless of who is in charge, and an argument can certainly be made that the position we most need to upgrade is Head Coach.

Rowsey may be a good shooter, but he has a horrible haircut (says this SOB--son of a barber).

Pardon my bluntness but it's really a D&$ck move not having ALL your Seniors on the floor. Especially when 2 play the same position and one of them fouls out.
Not very classy

I would want to be able to shoot, I just dont think that your only option (at least the majority of the time) is shooting 3 pointers can only get you so far (just ask VMI). if you only go inside, teams adjust and force you to shoot. if you only shoot 3s, teams will adjust and force you to beat them inside. There has to be a proper balance between the inside game and the outside game

Are you talking about the end of the game? I really don't see what the point would be in putting James Johnson back in. Senior night (day in this case) is all about the beginning of the game with the seniors starting, sometimes guys who almost never play. After that it's just another game. Looks like we will be facing these guys again on Wed. I think DL had to do everything he could to try to finish on a somewhat more positive note and go into that rematch with some confidence after that horrible stretch in the first half.

No. It's more than a game. It's about starting and finishing the game. Especially when the end of the game is not in doubt. Agreed that you don't play them till the end. You take them out with several seconds left so that the crowd and teammates can pay tribute to them. He did it exactly right with his son. But what about Johnson? There was no reason NOT to do the same, especially with Smith fouled out. If we had 8 Seniors who needed to be rotated then, yeah sure no worries. But we had 3, one of whom fouled out.
Let me put it back to you. Why WOULDNT you play him? Do YOU think he REALLY wanted to spend the last 6 minutes or so of his last home game on the bench? Do you think he feels all of his hard work was being appreciated? Or do you think he felt it was a slap in the face?

Roused doesn't just shoot 3's. Look at the number of FT's he shoots. Look at how often he gets in to the lane.
If ballcoach meant players that could just shoot 3's he would have mentioned EL

For the basketball Gurus . I have a question .

What are we trying to do on offense ? Layer said on radio post game that we not make that extra pass. I think we pass too much. get ball down court get open and shoot.

He also said something about not getting to ft line enough . we shot 40 FTs.

A. FT is 1 point . A FG is 2 or 3 points..

For your file. There is a difference between saying we need someone who can shoot and saying we need pure shooters

I'll take a stab and start by saying I have no idea what he means on the FT statement. Especially when he started to foul to get back into the game really early

On offense, in reference to this game, he is correct. We settled for ok shots when one more pass would have given us good/great shots. DL likes the team to run through their sets before getting a shot. Think of it this way: he wants the offensive sets, not the players to create the open shots. (Similar to what the WBB team has historically done). My preference is what UNCA does and pressure the defense all the time and run simple half court sets when needed. But that is 'tomato / tomatoe'

I don't have a problem with shooters. The way I see it, if youre taking 70 shots from the field a game, ideally you get 35 shots from the perimeter and 35 on midrange and closer. Will it work out that way? more likely than not, no. I would be fine with 55-65 percent in one direction as long as you convert a high percentage.
