if Layer isn't back after this season here is what I would do....

1- Throw 400k at Chris Holtmann if Butler doesn't name him HC
2- Interview mid major Head Head Coaches or assistants,

Downey(assistant) @ Bowling Green
McMahon (assistant) @ Murray St
Matt Driscoll (HC) @ N Florida
Zach Spiker (HC) @ Army

start with that list..... don't talk problems, talk solutions.

Though I would love to have Chris Holtmann as our head coach, I think that ship has sailed. Unless he has a real conviction for the Liberty mission, he will land a "bigger" job than LU.

Not sure how his worldview fits with Liberty, but someone is going to get a heck of a coach if they hire him. Spiker, Bob Knight, and Mike Krzyzewski are the only coaches in Army history to win at least 65 games in their first five seasons.

400K is a lot of cash for someone like Holtmann -- especially if you throw in bonuses... what you guys don't realize is, if you win big, LU can keep throwing money to him like VCU has done, Shaka didn't start at 1 million when he got there...

The world view is over rated, a coach is a coach, we all know Liberty is moving mainstream... as soon as the church moves away from the campus.

Shaka Smart was making more when he started at VCU than Layer is making right now; his salary bumped from $350,000 to $1.2 million in 2011. I think that this upcoming hire will make at least 350k and wouldn't be surprised at all if the new coach makes $450,000-$500,000.

When Doc gave those instructions, a can or 2 of gasoline and a match would have been sufficient. Nothing short of a nuclear device would do the job now.

Right, but look at our hires since Layer. The administration wants to find excellent coaches, but the spiritual/ministry side is clearly an integral part of the hiring process. There is not a decreased emphasis on finding coaches that fit Liberty's worldview.

I've watched NFL and NHL teams trade good coaches back and forth to one another for years. Many times being let go and rehired works out well for the coach, and teams just need a shake up at the top once in a while to get it going again. I think Dale Layer is a good man and coach, but eventually there will be a shake up, we all know it. I just hope it works out for everyone.

Don't worry there's another Tony Bennett out there!

Whose son even more disturbingly has made it clear that he puts more effort yelling at the LU Instagram account (About a win over an NAIA opponent no less!!!!) than actually getting better at basketball.

Some of you guys are crazy. So let me get this right you would rather have a guy that was a great coach and not have the same Christian world view ? Is that what I'm hearing? If it is we do need to burn the place down. Doc would never sell out the school for a winning program. You can have a great coach that is a believer and teaches a Christian world view. Just look at Football.

Yes, if DL is let go here, at least one assistant in Blacksburg had best be updating their resume.

While I still don't want McKay back as our head coach, I do think he deserves more respect for what he was able to accomplish here.

Dan Manley - 5 seasons, 4 losing
Harley Swift - 1 season, 1 losing
Dale Gibson - 3 seasons, 2 losing
Jeff Meyer - 16 seasons, 5 losing
Randy Dunton - 6 seasons, 5 losing
Mel Hankinson - 4 seasons, 3 losing
Dale Layer - 6 seasons, 5 losing
Ritchie McKay - 2 seasons, 0 losing

I know it's a small sample size, but he's our only coach to never have a losing season. He inherited a team coming off 3 consecutive losing seasons, and immediately put together 2 winning seasons. We've had 4 20 win seasons in 43 seasons. He owns 1 of them in just 2 seasons.

Thank you for stealing him away Tony Bennett Crybaby

Bring him back. He left for a once in a lifetime opportunity and you see now why. Those with still hurt feelings should get over it.

“His relationship with God was a big reason why I came here.”
And that's from a recruit to one of the most liberal schools in Virginia. Not that liberals aren't or can't be Christians, but we should be top dog in the state when it comes to recruiting Christian kids...

Clearly Meyer had the best resume... over time the RMK numbers would have went south, look at his other jobs. Plus Meyer took the program thru transition, not easy. RD, Mel, and Layer numbers are simply awful. BUt you could redo this and have conference finishes, or tournament finishes who advance the fartherest, etc and things may swing
