I agree. There is virtually nothing worth saving.

Im not thinking about saving the program by waiting to tell the team until after the season, I was thinking more about putting your best foot forward to a potential new coach. If I'm the AD and I decide to lett him go, and the players find out now, it can lead to one of two reactions I think: 1) the team galvanizes around the decision and tries to send the coach out on at least a positive note or 2 and the more likely i think) the team mails it in because they know they have a "lame duck coach". What kind of perception does that give to a potential replacement?

Also, while BYD makes some excellent points ballcoach, if that is the best you have ever seen on this board, I wonder how low your standards are considering this board has beel around for 8 years plus

You assume that the roster that we have will remain intact with a new coach. The roster needs to be completely overhauled just like the coaching staff.

I have only been around this board for maybe 2 years.

I think AD could start a secret coach search now, and wait until the day after final game, to clean house.

I probably should have mentioned this in my above post, but I think there are some pieces that could work with the right coach finding the right roles for them within the new roster dynamic. Any new coach is going to be doing some good talent evaluation and if they (the players) "mail it in", that won't give an accurate reflection to said new coach, and it makes a less than ideal first impression

Haize and byd pretty much summed up everything. Why did we expect anything different. This was what layer coached teams have always been. In fact this is even worse. In fact this is the one glaring massive miss on jbs tenure at lu. The biggest mistake though was to renew after a fluke tourney run. I hate to keep repeating myself but winning that tournament set us back big time. There is absolutely no reason not to make a change and the roster is terrible. Theres not one player that we would cry about losing if they left. Jb is competitive. Im sure this is killing him. I just think hes going to give dl the decency of letting him finish the season then make a change. Its going to be a long couple months but its necessary. On a team note. I get cracked up goin back reading about james johnson. I knew that was a waste of time just as i posted. Maxwell is already running him for minutes.

New coach or current coach will need to bring in at least 2 players who can score points. We are offensively challenged.

Are the two not related when it comes to the job of Athletics Director?
That's a question of institutional values.
Good point. I just don't understand why you'd be in the business of athletics if wins aren't important.

Andrew Smith disgusts me, he needs a character rehaul and needs to check his attitude. I am all for midseason firing at this point.

Fire Layer.

Although, honestly, the whole program is in shambles, does firing a coach even get to the root of the problem?

It couldn't possibly hurt.

If JB makes another awful basketball hire then he is the root of the problem. Not DL.

Yes, a change needs to be made, but do it midseason, and no coach worth his mettle will even talk to LU as a result. Layer is a class act, let him finish out the season then clean out his office.

I am not saying it is quite yet but if this program continues to underperform even after getting a new coach I will begin to question him a whole lot more.

And you wouldn't be the only one but other people JB has hired have worked out very well, HCTG, Toman, Dr. Dot who hasn't had on field success yet but her resume speaks for itself, and Coach Murphy who has been described on this forum as one of the best hires Liberty has ever made. So I wouldn't be calling for JB's head unless the next coach sucks too.

It does in many ways. In a few ways, it does not.

Which was exactly my point. His track record with the men's basketball program hasn't exactly been something to be proud of.

His track record consists of hiring RMK, a good hire that JB couldn't have known was going to leave like he did, and Layer. Layer was by everyone's admission a great fit for Liberty who hasn't worked out as far as wins and losses. That's not terribble by any stretch and certainly doesn't outweigh the ton of excellence JB has brought to LU athletics.

When Layer was hired, his biggest positive was that he brought a sense of stability. Having been an assistant under RM, he knew the players and the school. Remember, we had to recruit everyone back, including Jesse, as it seemed the whole program was falling to shambles.

I think the only reason he got job was he was familiar with roster at the time. Personally I did not like the hire at the time, and nothing has happened for me to change my thinking.

McKay was actually a great hire. He was going to have success before Curry bailed.

Fair enough but if his next basketball hire is a failure then it's on him. That is all I'm saying. I am also one of the few on this board that love basketball over football so I get a bit more emotional about it.
