It was stated on numerous occassions that if LU were in the CAA how we would barely finish middle of pack to bottom. Now that we have gone up against basically their top teams minus (UNH), see Im thinking top 3/4 not middle. How do you feel we would stack up after completing what we just have? Thought? Even though we know FBS is the ultimate goal.

I wish we would go FBS, and never be mentioned in the same breath as CAA again.

I do not like CAA.

Well, we went 1-2 against CAA teams this season. We would finish in the middle of the pack.

I don't know why would label this conference as garbage. It's the third best FCS conference and they have a team in semis. Far from garbage.

Not that the conference is garbage, but garbage talk about finishing middle of pack

That's not garbage talk. We went 1-2 against them. If we were in the CAA, we probably would have lost at least one more and maybe two more. That would be good enough for....middle of the pack.

This, we lost to Richmond and Nova...beat JMU. UNH would've been a toss-up, W&M we've had 4 chances against and came up short each time, Elon we'd win and I don't know enough about Stony Brook, Albany, Towson, Rhode Island and Maine although we'd likely sweep them.

We got hot and beat JMU. We lost to Richmond and Nova. It's much easier to get hot and beat a team once than it is to go through a gauntlet the entire season.

If we were in the CAA next year, we'd finish 4-6. Within a few years we could be top 3, but not right away.

We would be much better than 4-6. Predictions like that are hard to make, but JMU ran through that conference, and We ran through JMU. We had Nova on the Ropes, and Richmond could have been Alabama and that game was destined to go into overtime.

This is just my guess.

We couldn't finish 4-6 in the CAA next year. No one plays 10 conference games in a year.

It would depend on who we were playing in conference in that first season. A good schedule and we could go 5-3 like Richmond. A tough schedule and we go 3-5 like Albany.

Of course, we aren't getting in the CAA so its kind of a moot discussion.

Richmond could have been Alabama? We ran through JMU? Might have wanted to think that post through before hitting "submit."

Man, YOU really are a CAA homer aren't you, lol. It must have pained you on the inside that LU won, but you were able to put on the good face, right. But hey we are all entitled to our opinions.

BuryYourDuke wrote:Who cares about the CAA? The Big South was rated higher this year right? We play in a league that currently has 2 teams that could win the national championship, and 2 more that could be playoff teams.
No one in the Big South has ever been to the semi-finals, let alone play in the championship game or win one. Look who is still playing: 2 MVFC teams, 1 CAA, and Sam Houston St. The playoffs do what they are intended to do. The cream rises to the top.

Coastal is currently the best hope for a Big South national championship; we are definitely a step behind them. Charleston Southern and Presbyterian are always going to be longshots for the playoffs because of how they schedule.

That's my fault for not clarifying. I was speaking 4th to 6th place next year and within a few years, top 3.

I may be the only person on this board how thinks that we aren't ready for the FBS yet, I feel as if we would wind up a lot like App St, if we made the jump anytime soon. We have a great team, but FBS ready teams do more than win 1 playoff game. Think NDSU, could we beat them? if so, lets talk FBS.

I would be very pleased with what App State accomplished this season. After they lost to us, they won 6 straight Sun Belt games to finish 7-5 on the season.

And South Alabama did absolutely nothing in their FCS existence and managed to finish 6-6 overall this season with a 5-3 record in the Belt.

Check out the FCS teams to move up to FBS since 2012.

UMASS (joined 2012; last playoff appearance, 2007)
South Alabama (start-up; joined 2012; no playoffs)
Texas State (joined 2012; last playoff appearance, 2008)
UTSA (start-up; joined 2012; no playoffs)
Georgia State (start-up; joined 2013; no playoffs)
Appalachian State (joined 2014; last playoff appearance, 2012)
Georgia Southern (joined 2014; last playoff appearance, 2012)
ODU (start-up; joined 2014; last playoff appearance, 2012)
Charlotte (start-up; joining 2015; no playoffs)

None of those teams would beat NDSU. All are FBS and the majority of them are doing fine. That doesn't mean that we should stop trying to become better than NDSU, App State, or Georgia Southern at the FCS level until an FBS invitation comes. But there isn't a requirement for success at the FCS level and in order to have success at the FBS level. Success in FCS is extremely helpful, but it doesn't automatically mean that they will have success in FBS.

You left out Georgia Southern. They could probably beat NDSU and I would argue, after their loss to us, App State could beat NDSU. ODU, with Taylor Heinicke as their QB, could also beat NDSU.

Are we talking about the NDSU that barely squeaked by Coastal at home last weekend? They are not the powerhouse of years past.

And they are still better than ODU, App State, and Georgia Southern.

App State became a different team after we beat them. NDSU COULD beat those three, but I wouldn't bet money that they would.

You would rather pick a team that lost to Liberty, Southern Miss, got trashed by South Alabama, and beat a 4-8 UL-Monroe by 2? Pick App. State
You would rather pick a team who's last three games were 3 point win over Texas State, got annihilated against Navy, and squeaked out 6 point win vs. UL-Monroe? Pick Georgia Southern
You would rather pick a team who's last three games were a 3 point wins over FIU, FAU, and Louisiana Tech and beat Hampton by 13? Pick ODU

I'll take NDSU.

P.S. Western Illinois is far from awful.

NDSU, with the funding and motivation we have, would be FBS by now. NDSU should be FBS and playing in bowl games - they could compete today with a lot of FBS teams.
