I for one would think that we (Liberty U) has the best Kicker in ALL of college FB. I know they supposedly said that was the kicker from Maryland, but John "legatron" Lunsford has the longest in ALL CFB levels, is there something that I am missing in making that statement. And I would say that I don't think its that close, with his leg distance as compared to other kickers on the "D1" level. Someone if they can pls tell me why I might be wrong. Thx.

We are only one season removed from his lousy sophomore season. If he has another year like this one, or even better which I think he can do, I might agree with you. I will admit I don't follow kickers from other schools, so I don't know much about his competition.

We all now understand his sophomore slump due to the obvious distractions he was going through at the time. I tend to think of the 2013 season as an aberration and the other two seasons as evidence of his ability.

There can't be more than a handful of kickers in the netir enation who would be considered weapons. He is a dangerous one.

Cradddock's longest this year was 56 yards, only four yards short of Lunsford's best. The biggest thing that got Craddock the award, other than playing in the Big10, was he only missed one FG this year, if I recall Lunsford missed a few chipshots.

If there is one position on the football field where the level of competition is a non-factor it is as kicker.

If he improves any over the offseason its scary to think how good he could be. I think it almost hurt us sometimes because once we got inside the 40 we would get timid on play calling. Especially if we had a bad play on 1st down. It's like we knew we had 3 in the bag so just don't turn it over.

I hope thats not the case, otherwise bad coaching to "settle" for the 3 mindset

I knew that, kicker is all individual skill. What I meant by mentioning the Big10 was Craddock had a lot more exposure. They are definitely the two best kickers in college football. IMO Craddock is slightly more accurate but Lunsford has a slightly longer range.

ESPN crew calling the Villanova game said he's the best kicker in college football at any level.

Brad Craddock and Roberto Aguayo are better than Lunsford. But I would take Lunsford over Josh Lambert (the other Groza finalist).

Lunsford is the best in the country. Don't try to tell me anything different.

They annoyed me though, with their "He kicked 80 yarders in practice they say" garbage. No, we don't livestream our practices on YouTube, but you could tell from the kicks he DID make in that game that he had the leg to go farther if he needed to.

The ESPN 3 crews are awful, I could go out there and be more objective than those guys.

Sorry agree to disagree on this one, but by what measures, and pls don't say just because they are in bigger schools. Legatron could outkick them every Saturday and then the sunday after. If anything I could maybe give craddock a bit more accuracy. The other kicker Aguayo is I think a year younger than Lunsford.

Aguayo is pretty much automatic from any distance and probably will get drafted when his time comes and contribute immediately. Lunsford is going to need to get his consistency down from just outside of PAT-40 yards. He can hit the PAT and he can blast the big ones (as evidenced by this year), but kickers make their money between the 20 and 40 yard lines. if he can get those ironed out, he could be getting quite a few calls from teams looking for young kickers

Let's go with the basic kicking stats:

2014 stats
John Lunsford (Jr./12 games)
FGM 19 FGA 24 (79.2%)
XPM 43 XPA 44 (97.7%)

Josh Lambert (So./12 games)
FGM 27 FGA 36 (75%)
XPM 41 XPA 41 (100%)

Roberto Aguayo (So./13 games)
FGM 25 FGA 27 (92.6%)
XPM 53 XPA 53 (100%)

Brad Craddock (Jr./12 games)
FGM 18 FGA 19 (94.7%)
XPM 41 XPA 41 (100%)

Career FG Percentages

Lunsford 62.6%
Lambert 74.45%
Aguayo 94.05%
Craddock 80.04%

That is why I take Lunsford over Lambert; he had a better year this year. Aguayo is #1 and should have won the Groza two seasons in a row. Craddock had a better season than Lunsford as well. If a kicker is hot right now, you take him over the others right now. Next season, Lunsford could be better than Craddock or he could go back to kicking 42.1% for the season like he did in 2013....

As pointed out by bluejacket, the measures are called statistics. You should look at them sometime.

Agreed...Aguayo and Craddock both were virtually automatic this year, and will probably be the top two kicker prospects headed into 2015. As I pointed out, if John can straighten things out on his shorter kicks (outside of PAT), he can certainly get quite a few scouts asking about him at the FOC. Youre not always going to be coming in to blast 45, 50 or even 60 yard field goals. if you wanna get on an NFL roster, you gotta hit the short ones all the time, and occasionally pull out the howitzer.guys like Janikowski and (RIP) Rob Bironas had big legs too but they could hit the shorter kicks when called upon

Lunsford finished the season making 11 of his last 12 attempts including a perfect 3/3 from 50+. His struggles during his sophomore season were due to off the field issues. You won't see him struggling with accuracy in 2015.

Even going back further, after starting the season 2/4 on field goals, he finished 18 of 21 (85.7%). One of those misses was from 57 yards.

Read somewhere that the NFL is going to experiment with narrowing the posts to 14 ft., possibly in the Pro-bowl. If they ever decide to go that route, accuracy becomes king over length.
