I have read couple of different articles, that basically have called out the defense. I am struggling to see how the defense, which imo, has been the bright spot can be called into question, except on maybe one facet, CREATING MORE PRESSURE UP FRONT

DL - MANIMALS - When coach Sing turns these men loose they create havoc, and lots of it. I really like the DT Jaron Greene, that joker can move for a big guy, and even tho undersized he creates alot of turmoil. I do think that sometimes the DT's get upfield a lil to much and become trap bait, on some inside runs, but not a lot. The DE's get upfield but I haven't seen a team beat us with running underneath them, its inside runs. The DE I still want to see is our version of Jadeveon Clowney, lol, in #55 Tolen Avery, I like his motor, but would like to se him get a cpl more snaps.

LB's - GOONS - Siggy, as he is affectionately known leads this unit, and this is another joker with his blue t-shirt flapping flows to the ball with great intent to disrupt and or dislodge ball and or head from the ball carrier. Its not his tackling its the impact he brings on the tackle, that jolt. #59 Lewellyn has been all over the field this year sideline to sideline at Strong, and is the tackler, facepaint and all. Newman I think will really grow into a stud, he can definately cover the TE's but boy would I like to see him unleash on a QB or too on a stunt blitz. This unit I see plays alot of underneath zone type of playing and once again, let these boys loose, you have a group here that does need some more depth, but can really get after it.

DB's - AIR TRAFFIC PATROL - We all know Hagen is the leader back here, and well deserved, with his leadership and playmaking ability. The SS Sampson just flies around and makes tackles. The CB's Scott, Scott and Guillory have held there own for the most part. IMO, we play too much zone and bend dont break. Let's challenge some of their WR's and make them beat us versus a everything in front mentality. I don't see where tackling is the issue as much as shedding off some blocks a little earlier. If you are playing zone that has nothign to do with being young thats just the coverage called. I said in an earlier post any real good QB will pick you apart without changing up some coverages. We play to give up catches we will, we challenge them it becomes a fight. I wonder if we could get somewhat exotic and send some cb blitzes, to rush timing in some instances.

Bottom line it starts up front, let them Manimals eat up front, follow that up by turning that Goon Squad loose in the middle, and for dessert let the Air traffic patrol on the back end take down some of whats in the air. I would love to Hagen Sampson bless someone in Williams Stadium. There has yet to be one snot bubble tone setting let me check if im ok myself type of blessing sent this year.
This is a good to above avg defense that has been doing it up. Lets keep them motivated.

I agree this defense has a ton of potential, but they have still given up 30+ points in 3 of the 5 games this year. Sure, some of those points were due to special teams miscues and turnovers, but still, points are points.

And the DLine had nothing on Indiana State's OLine this past Saturday. Hopefully it was just a one game blip or maybe it was just because of all the quick release passes they had.

I was just perusing the UR message board and here are some comments they made about our defense, not saying they're right just pointing them out:

"the Flames probably can't stop our offense so we should score enough points to win"
"Their D, especially against the pass, is not very good."

Interesting thoughts from an opponent.

I usually don't put a whole lot of stock into the excuses coaches give in their post-game press conferences, but I happen to agree with Wimberly's assessment from the previous game. The D lost some personnel and had to play a bit more conservatively in the first half. Couple that with the fact that Indiana St's QB was getting the ball out quickly (obviously they saw the footage of our D-line) made for an ugly 1st half. I really thought our D held up nicely in the 2nd half though and in the 3rd quarter they gave the offense a chance to catch back up. The issue was the Offense never got going and just when it seemed they were getting a rhythm, we turned the ball over. I just don't think we can blame the D for that game.

Oh, I agree with you the defense gave the O a chance to win the game, but at the same time the D still gave up 38 points. You shouldn't expect your O to score 40.

I'll eat that Mr. Manson, but ill burp you this,

UNC - Not the Defenses fault really, when the ATP had flights grounded the QB then took a taxi on the ground and was unaccounted for, in the offseason you know he is a running QB by film, should of been spied by someone. Everything they had was on short field, but nothing was forced down there throats.

Brevard - per coach, the game plan was to keep it simple saying didn't want to change up things, to keep it simple for the kids, and Brevard gave them stuff they hadnt seen on some occasions

ISU - ATP had alot of flight damage due to to many outgoing quick flights, lol. Bend but dont break, not quite a prevent but it prevented us from winning. When we attacked them with our MANIMALS and GOONS in the second half, alot of those flight patterns were cancelled.

Seems to me there is another different common denominator here. Lets not outcoach ourselves, believe in the 100 you have in your locker room, and lets go eat. Go back and listen to coach TG in the 2013 intro. FAST, PHYSICAL, DOMINATE, and you can't dominate if you have in intrepidation. Turn up the HEAT and lets eat.

actually mr. manson you are saying they are right. But as I stated earlier PRESSURE burst pipes, he didn't have same amount of time in second as in the first, and the outcome was totally different. Yes if I sit in a zone and you hit me with a zone beater you will win, but if I challenge you a little bit more, it takes the timing off and you can't sit and pre snap read and know where you want to go.

Also, if your on the field all night long, you do and will get tired, even beasts need to take a break every now and then. Can't be 3 and out and expect the D to hold up all night. We need to win the battle of field position, and also not always be playing on a short field. But I guess we will see come Saturday, something has to give

come on man, none of this mr. manson stuff, it's jon. haha

I agree with your thoughts on UNC. The defense played really good for the majority of that game. I think there were 2 long drives where we couldn't stop them. Most of the points we allowed were a direct result of special teams and offensive mistakes. Plus, it's an ACC opponent.

I also agree with Brevard. We still gave up over 30 points to a DII team, but I understand why it happened.

I also agree with you on ISU. The defense played great in the 2nd half, but by then it was too late. If Richmond comes out and scores 30+ points, for whatever reasons, it will be tough to win. And their offense definitely has the potential to put up that many points.

I think our defense will end up being a strength by the end of the season, but right now it's hard to say they are. Every argument for it comes back to certain reasons or excuses to argue that point.

The D will be supremely tested given Richmond's offense is superior to ISU's offense. We better have a good scheme to slow down Strauss and not give up the big runs like in last year's game and as seen in some of the games so far this year.

We have to pressure the QB, but the problem is that our linebackers have shown that they cannot cover passes in space. That's why we usually only rush four down linemen and started Indiana State (pass first offense) so conservatively even with the linebackers at full strength. They have to mix it up against Richmond and get more aggressive even though it risks that we get burned.

Wimbo has had great explanations for what has happened every time our defense has had an issue this year. Obviously we can't have those things keep happening, but his explanations are legit.

It's also nice to have a coach (of any sport) say something of significance and actually talk. Most coaches don't do that.

I agree, especially with the bolded part. Overall, the defense has been better than the offense about correcting mistakes.

I will say that this is a stat worth noting. Under Turner Gill, Liberty is 2-7 when the opposing team scores 30 points or more. Wins: Gardner-Webb (2012) and Brevard (2014). Losses: Norfolk State (2012), Montana (2012), Coastal (2012), Richmond (2013), Coastal (2013), North Carolina (2014), Indiana State (2014).
