Random observations:

-Empty stands on TV communicate a lot. Playing in a 30,000 seat stadium, the official attendance was 6,150 but you'd never know it based on the images. It's Norfolk State's home opener and the appearance was that few cared.

-Is the school that cash-strapped that they can't paint the lines or refresh their logo?

-For all the talk of TG grading Woodrum on each throw to help him improve on accuracy and decision-making, he missed on 11 attempts including throwing into triple coverage, throwing late over the middle, and throwing across his body. To me, at least, none of those were stellar decisions. However, what stood out for me in the post-game interviews was the confidence that he seems to have in himself. I wonder if Josh is too confident sometimes. He could have easily had a couple INT's in my opinion. Against a better secondary, such mistakes can be killers.

Yikes!

If I were TG, I would make a rule: If your name isn't Brett Favre and unless you are throwing to Calvin Johnson, A.J. Green or Andre Johnson, you should NEVER throw into triple coverage!

slept on my opinion and glad I did.

still wanna preface by saying I truly HOPE that NSU is the best defense, we'll see other than CCU, all year

if so; that takes most of the frustration away. If not; we have real problems on offense. Whether its the playcalling or our QB remains to be seen. Maybe we're saving the good stuff for Conf competition. :roll

Defense: A-
good pass defense, decent run defense- though they definitely made adjustments in the 2nd half
somebody made the point (LANG?) that other than 1 series, NSU didn't cross our 40 all day.
you don't go into many stadiums as the visitors and shut out a FCS program
the one major issue that problem should have lowered the grade to a B? TACKLING. try it. how many guys either arm tackled or just straight bounced off the runner/qb? Awful. Penetration and pursuit by the line guys however- stellar!

Offense: B-
see preamble. I just don't like the playcalling, but what do I know. We were successful going downfield but for whatever reason, went away from that. If Woodrum could throw a deep ball consistently we have another 14 points. Great throw and catch on the one series that came back for a hold, I believe- but that 3 yds and a cloud of dust crap makes me manic. *and I'm a "BIG" fan
whoever made the point last week about our playcalling going rush, rush, pass, punt was dead on.

Special Teams: B
punting- meh. didn't hurt us, didn't flip the field too often. We shouldve been able to pin them deep more often. Returns- same. nothing earthshattering. Sometimes you get a spark in this type of game by a standout play on special teams- we havent' seen that yet this year. Gone are the days when our punt/kick returners were near the tops in the nation bringing them back
pk- hey the kid made the ones they asked him to make. unlike the guy with the great leg who shanks them more often than not. so thats a plus.

Coaching: C
I just don't know what to think. read my b@#^&ing and moaning in the offensive section. If we don't pull something out of our collective rears the rest of the way we are in real trouble in Conway. Again- if NSU was that good that they limited our playbook or at least contained our success, then good on them and roll on. But run run pass punt makes me drink heavily. We have at least one quick kid on the outside- let him go get it. And the stuff to the TE works too when we try it; maybe we needed them inside to counter the DE but here's hoping we get some more O the rest of the way.

Media: C
look, I appreciate the fact that our PBP and color guys try to remain neutral. I dont mind that - though, man do we seem to compliment the opposing teams more than ANYONE else I watch. Sometimes if it weren't for the graphics you wouldnt know whose team is producing the broadcast. But could you PLEASE follow the play and NOT talk over the ref explaining the penalty? and worse, sometimes it's obvious you didn't know the flag had even been thrown. Down and distance? there's a concept. Be great to know that. be even better to display it on a graphic. And the inane banter... just call the game brosef. Yikes. But I will temper all that by saying we have BY FAR, the BEST production of ANY FCS I've seen. EVER. and I can sit at my bar in the basement and watch Flames Football from 500+ miles away. So keep it coming.

flamerbob wrote:I disagree forbidden. I think Gabe is that #2 threat. I thought Shells was always considered the third receiver this year anyway. The problem is we have three deep talen in the TE area, Abnar can catch, Petey, and Gabe. There are plenty of weapons, they just need the right calls made.
Agree it disagree my friend, gabe doesn't get enough touches to be considered a true 2, but I will tell you this, gabe seems to be the only one whom I see on a more consistent basis use his hands to catch the ball, all the other wrs including Petey seem to be body catchers. I will agree on the calls being made for them to possibly be effective, tho.

thanks to our friends at CCU for this link http://stats.ncaa.org/rankings?sport_co ... ivision=12

very interesting.

NSU ranked #8 in the country in total defense
we are #29, T-11 for team sacks, T-3 for passes intercepted, T-5 for turnovers gained

total offense: we are #76 so YEAHHHHHHH that's an issue (T-1, yes #1, for red zone offense tho)

granted its only 2 games and some teams have only played 1- this will undoubtedly even out after a couple weeks

be interested to see how we shake out since D has been a weakness here lately

Mike Tilley isn't some Johnny Come Lately broadcaster who we picked up. He did games for us back when Williams Stadium opened up (I think somebody posted some video from that first game at some point). Now he does make mistakes, but its not like the man is a total hack behind the mic. Is there room for improvement? Tough to say since yesterday was the first game of the season for the TV crew (I do have an issue with the studio guy on the radio side but that is for another discussion). They get another game or two to work out some kinks in the friendly confines of Williams Stadium before heading out on the road again. Now if I tune in to the Indiana State game and we are still having these issues, then we could have some argument over things.

As to the team, The offense does need to open up a lot more. I prefer a more Texas Tech style offense personally but I don't think we need a shift that radical after two games. Now the question I have is whether or not they are keeping things vanilla so that opponents in the near future (Like Indiana State or App State) do not have as much to go on in film study, or is the offense really just that average. I personally would rather it be the former than the latter because we cannot have an average offense against anybody in the Big South if we want to win the title outright

oh do be sure to let us know at what point we're allowed to "have some argument over things"

or even an opinion that differs from yours.

thanks

The broadcast was not to our normal quality on Saturday. Part of it was the stadium. Part of it was not having their normal crew. Regardless of the reasons from the production side, the talent in the booth wasn't good. My wife was even telling them to shut up at times.

Its fine shorty...I haven't had a chance to watch the broadcast as of yet, so I can understand his perspective on things from Saturday.

I don't have a problem with our guys being complimentary of the other team, etc. That's good manners and there's nothing wrong about that. I much rather have objective than "homerish" (and I'm not talking 'The Simpsons').

However, there is room for improvement with the PBP calls. Our guy does well and has years of experience. That said, he's naturally a slow speaker. Too many times the play call starts 2-3 seconds after the play is underway. Details are missed. Yes, viewers can see the action on the screen but I wish the play was called "radio style" with everything being described. PBP needs to anticipate the action, mention the details as they unfold and call down and distance every time.

The color guy is high energy and will jump in between plays to do his thing. He'll be alright.

During the timeouts or delays is the time to hear about the construction on LU's campus or success by LU's other sports teams. You can't be talking about non-game matters in between plays and still focus adequately on the game. And we only need to hear that Turner Gill is the 3rd year coach of Liberty one time.

The production is good and getting better. I like the division of the on-air talent as well. The chemistry seems to work well. Also, last week, Erin Hagen was professional and didn't crow that it was her husband that turned the game around. She separated the personal and the professional. I appreciated that.

Overall, my only complaint is that PBP needs to stick to the facts on the field between plays and describe the action as it's taking place. The announcements of future games, etc. really has to wait until other portions of the broadcast.

:I chortle audibly.:
What? You didn't think she was professional?

Seriously....Erin does a good job on-air in multiple sports. And, Hagen looks like a baller this year. The stripped fumble last week was a thing of beauty. I hope we see a lot more of that!
