I use it sparingly when I am travelling. My son uses it at home. I haven't had any issues with the WiFi in hotels. But anything is possible.

Cider, you strike me as someone who likes a remote. If so, Roku.

And doesn't Chromecast require another device, like a tablet or computer? It doesn't have any built-in channels or apps, does it?
We have a roku, and I can't tell you how annoying the remote is with little kids (2 under 4)... they always seem to walk off with it. At least with the chromecast you control things with your phone, which is a bit harder to loose. But you may not be in that situation.

I've had the Roku2 for almost a month and have used it ONCE: to watch a ballgame with the ear plug while Mrs. Cider was sleeping.

You can do that with a ROKU too.
Yes, and you get some sort of voice control with the Android app. I assume it's the same on iOS too. And you get to use your smartphone keyboard for those situations when you have to/want to type n something, which is a whole heck of a lot easier than doing it from the Roku remote.

lol - I did the same thing with my Chromecast ;)

I'm thinking about getting the Roku Stream thing for Christmas; same form factor as the Chromecast, but a lot more things available, looks like.

I like the idea of that too since I'm looking to get an upgrade over my several years old Roku. But I'm holding out for Android TV to see how that is like since it's supposed to be similar to the Roku boxes instead of like the Roku sticks/Chromecast. Probably will just end up selling the Chromecast if I get the Android TV since it will have casting functionality too, I basically wasted $30 on that Chromecast thing.

True, I'm not a fan of Amazon's line of devices though.
Amazon makes some amazing products. And some amazingly bad ones (imo). I would never want a kindle "fire" or "fire phone." I love my "regular" kindle, and would LOVE to have a paperwhite.

I am open to the FireTV. I have a Roku 2 and an AppleTV. The later is my favorite, although missing out on Amazon Prime is difficult. The Roku experience stinks, but having Amazon Prime made the $60 worth it. If Apple were to add Amazon Prime, the only thing that would draw me to the Fire TV would be gaming... which Apple <might> move towards in the future as well.

The lack of Amazon Prime on most devices is really disappointing. That's the only reason I don't drop Netflix and subscribe to Prime. I don't get why most manufacturers don't carry a Prime widget along with the others.

And Amazon's line of Kindle Fires are pretty good, especially for the price.

It's not always up to the device manufacturers to put Amazon access on their devices. There are many cases where Amazon either doesn't want to or has dragged their feet in making their content available via other set top boxes.

Does anyone else have lag issues with their Apple TV? Whenever I try to stream from my Macbook Pro, it never really works properly.

This just seems foolish to me on Amazon's part. When I'm looking for a smartTV or bluray player, I look at the widgets and access they have. It's really hard to find one with Prime, especially the TVs. Maybe most people don't use their media this way, so it's just me.

Amazon instant video is nice, as long as you aren't paying the $79 to get ripped off for it. Their "free" Amazon Prime catalog is a joke for TV shows. Amazon instant streaming is pretty good for renting movies though.

You clearly don't use Prime for household purchases. The $79 is a good investment. But I understand the investment costs are rising.

Would take several years of buying household purchases to make Amazon Prime sensible. Yesterday I had to buy garbage bags for the first time in two years, for example.
