Well we are three weeks away from the first kickoff against North Carolina, so I thought, with all the different previews hitting the net, I would give my perspective on the 2014 Liberty Flames, and break down each position. Will start with one of three major position battles on the offensive side, the quarterbacks:

Players Lost:
None

Players Returning:

Josh Woodrum 198/308 2581 Yards 19 TDs 7 INT (2013 Big South All-Conference Second Team)
Javan Shashaty 15/17 205 Yards 1 TD 0 INT
Stephon Masha No 2013 Stats (redshirt)
Bo Swanson No 2013 Stats (redshirt)

Players Incoming:

JT Bradwell 6'2" 190 Lbs (Godby HS, Tallahassee FL)

The Flames return all four QBs from the 2013 roster, led by Josh Woodrum, in his second full season as starter in 2014. The Cave Spring product has lit up the skies for Liberty in the last two seasons, missing becoming the first Flames signal caller with back to back 2000 yard seasons his first two years after throwing for just under 2000 in 2012. With a 2000 yard season this year, though, he will become the first Flame since current Jacksonville Jaguars WR Mike Brown turned the trick in 2010 and 2011 and only the third in program history (Hall of Fame member Robby Justino being the other one).

Shashaty had a solid year in 2013, only missing two passes, but he would usually come in when the game was well in hand and did not have to make a ton of deep throws when he came in, so how good he can be is yet to be seen. Masha, the jewel of the 2013 signing class, sat out as a redshirt last year, but has shown a lot of promise and could very well pass Shashaty for the backup position by the time the Flames begin game week prep for the Tar Heels, offering a skill set very similar to Woodrum, which could offer a lot more for OC Aaron Stamn

Swanson, who transferred to nearby Liberty Christian Academy after his senior football season, came in as a preferred walkon in 2013 and probably will be doing a lot more scout team work and probably won't get many reps unless Liberty was up a ton, or the three QBs ahead of him all suffered injuries (which would be a much bigger problem).

Bradwell, another dual threat QB from the talent rich state of FL, will be redshirted this season, unless the second scenario for Swanson came into play, and even then, it would be a risky proposition burning his redshirt at this juncture.

Projected Depth Chart

Josh Woodrum
Stephon Masha
Javan Shashaty
Bo Swanson
JT Bradwell (redshirt)

Woodrum is the man...easily. The only way he doesn't start under center for Liberty down in Chapel Hill is either a) he suffers a severe injury in practice b) He goes clinically insane at some point in the next three weeks or c) The Rapture occurs (and chances are 99 percent of us won't be around to even debate that point should that happen). If what Im reading on here is accurate, I really think that Masha edges out Shashaty for the backup spot with the former walkon ending up #3.

Thanks BJ, Can Stephon run ? I havent heard what type of QB he is. Your piece states he has a similar skill set to Woodrum, so I was curious if he had any more mobility than Josh.

From what I have gathered both from comments about how he has looked in practice and his highlight film (the only game action we have of him at this point, he certainly can run. He probably won't pass Woodrum but I do think that having him as the backup will give Coach Stamn a lot more versatility in playcalling, even in situations where the outcome of the game is already in hand. That said, if (God forbid) Josh gets injured, I feel more confident with Masha stepping onto the field to take over as opposed to Shashaty.

So your saying Shashaty's skill set is similar to Woodrum's ?

So he's no Bruce Lee but he's got skills like Mike Tyson ?? Minus the bite ..

That is true manson...but as I mentioned in my running back thread, he looks like more of a speedster (kinda like DeAnthony Thomas formerly of Oregon). I would probably use him along with Macon or Mosley because the two (or three even) would be a very complementary backfield.

Im just giving my perspective manson. Coach Gill I have no doubt has a different thought in mind for how to use those guys down the road. my philosophy though, would be use the smaller guys like Smith on sweep plays and situations where you can take advantage of his speed and size to flank the defense and use the bigger guys like Mosley and Todd Macon to attack the middle because they can handle that sort of punishing style.

Haha... Im sure Coach Gill and the staff will make the right decision for how to use these guys. Every coach (or aspiring coach in my case) has their own philosophy and while I have my own perspective, I support Coach Gill and what he is doing. That will be a very fun thing to watch after 2015.

you know BEEJAY (though I know you don't spell it that way) unless we are in the head coach's office (and we aren't) there is really no way to tell how he is going to use these players. He probably won't consult with some random guys on a message board (even though this is a good one) to see what we feel he should do (though maybe he checks with JLF,JR since that guy is the coolest and knows everything).

In the end, we have to trust Coach Gill's judgement (and LUAD Jeff since he hired HCTG) and remember it's just a game, not real life (though sometimes we wish it was). Each coach and player should focus on doing the best they can and not worry about what some armchair quarterback in his momma's basement thinks. (or maybe just a couch in his dad's living room if he/she doesnt have a mom/dad or a basement)

when you get right down to it, this is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit kick the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.

I mean, I'm sure they're gonna give it 110% but they gotta stay within themselves and remember "I'm just happy to be here, and I hope I can help the ball club. I just wanna give it my best shot, and good Lord willing things will work out. You got to play ‘em one day at a time."

(and all God's people said AMEN)

I agree with what you said shorty...as I said in the OP, this is merely sharing my perspective, as we all do (share our own perspective that is). When all is said and done, we are all fans of Liberty football and as we have for the 40 years prior (from Coach Royer all the way to Coach Gill today), we rally behind the coach and cheer for the Flames onto victory, and the guys give their full measure to get that victory. The coaches put together the best 24 guys and whatever their decision, I know that as a fan, I can agree or disagree with it til the cows come home, but at the end of the day, its not my decision, its Coach Gill's and Coach Stamn's and every other coach on that staff...not mine, not medic's, not Sly's, not manson's, not BYD's not Purple's...but all told, you're right medic...and as long as those 90 guys (or however many are on the roster) are doing their very best...I have zero problem with just being a keyboard jockey offering my perspective on a message board

Allow me...

Jon, critic and I all were in the same Coaching Football class. We had to give a speech of some sort to the class (as if they were the team). When I was tasked with giving the speech, I hit the whiteboard...a lot...and gave a speech which I would rather forget because it was not my finest hour as it related to extemporaneous speaking (I like to at least have an outline in front of me to build from).

That's the short version...
