During that 3 years Layer had only one late signee, Wesley Alcegaire, who signed in July of 2012. Wesley didn't play much in his 2 years with the team, but I highly doubt saving that scholarship for 2013, when we signed Kemrite and Retic, would have made a huge difference.

But theres 2 open from allen and bonds right? Why not try to get a pg like him and sit on the other. I mean if retic goes down right now were screwed without a scholarship pg. The one question is why was he around this late with 6 offers?

Easy to forget him. He didn't stick around much longer than Bonds did, but he actually started a few games while he was here. His schollie ended up going to Casey Roberts. You could make a good argument with 20/20 hindsite that Roberts should have stayed a walkon and Jourdan's schollie saved, but Roberts actually did some good things early on. Early signees can flop too. Chad Donley and Larry Taylor to name 2.

I can think of a couple of possible reasons off hand why he was still available. He may have qualified late and the schools who had offered him backed off, or he may have fallen victim to a numbers game where he was a second or 3rd option for all the schools that offered and they all signed the guys they wanted more. It happens. Players always want you to know when someone has made an offer, but I've never heard of anyone tweeting that a school had withdrawn their offer, which happens all the time.

I agree and disagree. I see what you're saying, but Casey wouldn't have stayed without a scholarship. I can promise that (not that you have any reason to trust me). Larry Taylor being a "flop" is strictly based on perspective. If you are looking from the outside in, I can see why you think that way, but it is far from the actual case. I'm going to stop before I rant.

I don't disagree with signing this particular kid, I hope that wasnt lost in translation. I actually agree that we needed a PG bad because no one can play 40 minutes a night. My issue wit h it is that it is a late sign guy, so why not go get a JUCO guy that doesn't have the potential of locking you down for 4 years? If thats your guy, thats your guy, but it wasnt your guy until Bonds drove off into the Sunset. (Literally because Tennessee is west of VA. Great Analogy.)

As SCAR stated, no one is locked in for 4 years, but I think I can confidently say that during the time since Bonds left that our staff has been looking for a PG, they looked at JUCO players as well as HS. Apparently they felt Dembley was the best option available.

Yeah. If this is the best that you can do, I think that its better to sit on it. Should have said that in the other post.

Wow, you must have done a really extensive evaluation of the kids game to be able to diss him with such confidence. Better to go a year with a walkon as your only backup at PG? What happens if Retic gets hurt?

Funny that until reading all of the negative posts my reaction was excitment that we could get a guy this late that had other D-1 offers of this nature. I have seen too many times in all three major sports where you read quotes such as "I have always dreamed of playing D-1 and I am so thankful that Liberty gave me an opportunity" because their only other options were D-2/3 schools.

Appears to be desperation and it probably was but if you can get a guy offered by those programs to come in this late, you do it. Unless there is an backup option that no one is mentioning, you cannot go into the season with only one usable point guard for both injury and practice reasons.

We can pick up another preferred walkon. I mean nothing against Dembley and I hope that he succeeds this season and in the future. He's a very solid player. But we are polishing the banisters on the Titanic at this point.

I am really going to be pulling for our 2 freshman PGs, Dembley and Hoffman to do well. Hoffman is a great story. Kid literally DREAMED about playing hoops for LU since he was a child. It didn't look like it was going to happen, and then he got a chance to show what he could do in front of our coaches and had his best 2 games ever, which led to his being offered a walkon spot. I really don't get the negativity toward Dembley. I think if we had signed him in November instead of Bonds, we would be singing a different tune. Dembley rated #6 in MN. Bonds #8 in TN. And yes Purple, the guy who tied with him signed with the Citadel, but the guy rated 10th is a 6'9" post who signed with SDSU, and is essentially taking James Johnson's spot on their roster.
