Men's & Women's Basketball Season Tickets Sales Are Out The Roof

Season Tickets Sales Are Hot So Far This Season.
December 5, 2006
Lynchburg, Va.

Men’s and women’s basketball are experiencing huge increases in season ticket purchases for the 2006-07 season.

The men’s basketball team has experienced a 160 percent increase over last year’s ticket sales while women’s basketball has a 232 percent increase in sales as the team is going for its 11th-straight Big South championship and NCAA Tournament bid.

The Furnace is on fire so far this season as both the men and women’s teams are undefeated at home. The women have a big home match-up tonight against Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. and don’t miss the men’s last home game on Saturday against Longwood at 7 p.m. before they head on the road for two games.

Plenty of great seats are still available and you can order yours by calling (434) 582- SEAT.

people can buy tickets and never show up. many schools and pro teams as well sell season tickets, but the fannies never get in the seats.

yeah no kidding...thats why in front offices of sports teams they mainly will go off of fannies in the seats rather then attendance numbers

Yep, whenever you just see percentages without any real numbers it makes you wonder what they aren't saying...

WU reporting their season ticket sales were up as well. Maybe a trend sweeping the BSOUTH?

somehow I doubt it :D

on a side note, what numbers were we looking at here?

Last yr vs this year, I mean. ( if we know last years numbers, SJ can extrapolate this yr by figuring the theoretcial increase in percentage. Or maybe not)

Somehow i really do not believe that. I will believe it when the butts are in the seats.

Let me explain why. I am no way answering for the Athletic Department. This is my opinion on why they worded it this way.

They answered with percentages because if they announced with actual seat numbers it would look to most like a big dissapointment. Last Year we had very few season ticket holders. The years before last we were lucky to have 10 actual paying season ticket holders. So LU has been successful in actually selling season tickets this year. In years past no one would buy tickets to a game - they would just call their buddy who had a buddy that had a buddy that knew a buddy that eat with a buddy that had a cousin that lived next to a friend that would get them free tickets. There was no reason to buy season tickets when you were almost guaranteed to get in for free to most or all of the games anyway. Giving away tickets is the worst thing you can do when you are trying to build up a successful program. It devalues the product and created a situation where they would not sell season tickets.

That has stopped. So now you are seeing a huge growth rate of Season Tickets, but if they would have come out and said - we have sold 300 season tickets - everyone would laugh and compare that number to VT and UVA. But in all actuality that is a huge step forward for the program and a giant leap for a financially sustaining program.

I think WU released their numbers....I think it was 2,000 but I'm not sure. But that definitely doesn't mean they show up for every game.

I bought season tickets (2) for basketball season even though I get in for free as a media member. I got one for MRS SCAR and guest even though in the past they were comped to me. I believe in Jeff Barber's leadership and Dr. Falwell's vision so I gladly purchased the tickets to contribute to the athletic dept and to give some value to the tickets. They have a long way to go in terms of making it difficult to get into the Vines without paying (there are so many ways to do so at this point) but they are making strides.

Yeah, I have season tickets but I can't make the 4 hour round trip for every game. While I'm sure the Athletic Department is sad that I can't make every game, getting my money helps them get over it. :)

If I remember right, the 2,000 season tickets sold this year was a huge increase from a couple of years ago.
