U.S. Patent office cancels Redskins trademark registration, says name is disparaging

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the Washington Redskins trademark registration, calling the football team’s name “disparaging to Native Americans.”

The landmark case, which appeared before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, was filed on behalf of five Native Americans. It was the second time such a case was filed.

“This victory was a long time coming and reflects the hard work of many attorneys at our firm,” said lead attorney Jesse Witten, of Drinker Biddle & Reath.

I heard on the radio that an Federal Court has already ruled in Favor of Dan Snyder.

Also, they had a couple of interesting ideas:
Change the logo to a potato and you don't have to change the name (think about it). You could also dress up said logo like Mr Potato head in Native American garb and its a win / win

This is my favorite. Change your logo to the Capitol Building and change the name to DC Corruption or The DC Corruptors!

While I respect people's opinions, I objectively wonder why people who believe it truly is offensive actually say and type the word. If you truly believe it's offensive, wouldn't you refer to it as the "r" word? I'm not trying to be sarcastic here, I'm actually trying to logically think this through....No one in there right mind would utter the "N" word on espn radio or on this board... so if the word redskin is just as offensive, then shouldn't words be backed up with actions on the part of the offended? I just find it funny hearing mike and mike and others continually spouting off on how offensive the word is...but continually saying the name redskins.

The only way something is going to happen as far as a name change is concerned is if sponsors start pulling out. Because right now Daniel Snyder doesn't give a crap.

And this may be a total coincidence, but the pro team that gets the most respect for representing Native-Americans the right way, the Chicago Blackhawks, will be the visiting team in 2015 Winter Classic which I believe is going to be at FedEx Field(not 100% on that). I wonder why THAT was announced today.

Mike Carey, who retired after the 2013 season following 24 years in the league, says he requested off Washington's games beginning with the 2006 season because it became clear to him that "something disrespectful" was happening and being on the field "probably (was) not the best thing for me."

It's funny, this story peters out (because it's really a non-story that nobody cares about), and then the media tries to ramp it up again. It's exhausting, to be honest. Someone should put together a montage of people like Phil Simms or Mike Greenberg that shows all the times they've said the word "redskins" without a care in the world. These guys are all like snowflakes blown in the wind, all of them, and yet we're all supposed to bow to their every whim.

It’s not easy to cover an NFL team without ever mentioning its nickname. But that’s precisely what the Washington Post will do, from this point forward.

Sort of.

The editorial board of the Post has announced that it will stop using the team’s name, most of the time.

“While we wait for the NFL to catch up with public opinion and common decency we have decided not to use the slur ourselves except when it is essential for clarity or effect,” the newspaper said.
