they also could play sports in college because it was free...They like playing basketball. Oh, at Duke better basketball (I hate that school). The fans do support their team, but it is because they win, not just the school spirit. A college student should not forced to support a team they do not like, or that they don't have time for. If that were the case, we need to swamp every track meet, every tennis match, and every swim meet.

Duke is a bad example. They've made themselves the spectacle. The crazies are there for the crazies. I'd rather have people be interested in the team.

LUconn is exactly right.

Winthrop's the best example. Nobody came to the games til they became good, now they have great crowds.

Well, take a look at Coastal last year. In January they weren't playing worth a crap. They did a Teal Daze and a Black Out and gave away shirts to the first 500 into the gym and they got a great crowd there. They were just basic t-shirts that said "CCU Chanticleers" on them. They probably cost no more than $5 to make. Shoot, get a company to sponsor them, slap their logo on the back, and put the Liberty logo on the front and bam, student section t-shirts.

Here are the ones at Coastal (some have the Rowdy Roost t-shirt on, but a ton have the basic ones on)

Yes, I know Coastal's gym only seats 1000, but you have to fill what you have.

Looks like four of five of them could fill the gym by themselves.

I believe we had somewhere around 2400 students on campus when I graduated - 1995? Students went to the games. We had more people in the stands than we do now - that's the point!!
PROTO is right. My frosh class in 88 was the biggest class ever (if memory serves) and we had less than 4k on campus.

But Liberty Gym was always PACKED for hoops, and you did NOT want to play us there. FB was well attended too, back when H'burg's love affair w/ MH was in its infancy.

Campus was a GHOST zone when we had a home game in those days- but to be fair- there was NOTHING else to do back then. I was telling SJ last time I was down- I'd be a horrendous student if enrolled there now; its unbelievable how many things are available to students within walking distance of campus. When the old hags were on the mt- we were surrounded by woods, highways, and factories. The sidewalks were rolled up at 7 PM.

Somebody needs to light a fire, so to speak, under kids butts.

Oh, and MrsPA had an epiphany the other morning; pre-game music should include "Some like it Hot"

yes- we were having a Robert Palmer/80's moment over breakfast.

I too, think Duke is a bad expample. If there is all this school spirit, I do not recall anybody camping out for tickets for the football team.

Winthrop has ok crowds. They don't come close to filling out their building though. They have a pretty good atmosphere but I wouldn't say they were the standard bearer or anything. Their success the past 8 or 9 years has been well documented but it has not filled their building every night.

proportionally or in sheer numbers? I remember reading they only draw 2k or something like that. Their arena is pretty small, no?

6000 or so. Nicest arena in the league.

I think if we did upgrades in the Vines that it would be the nicest but right now I would have to give it to Winthrop hands down. They upgraded a few years ago and they did it right. Great atmosphere to watch a game. Their arena is a little too dark for me but it could be all the maroon on the walls and chairs.

A dark arena is the wrong way to go. Even if your colors are maroon. Keep the colors on the court. I hate dark arenas.
