So is it possible that some of these less wealthy programs drop down to FCS if they can't afford these new $$$$ requirements ??? Liberty to the American or MWC to scoop up a poor schools spot??

But I do agree that reforms could lead to some spots opening up in G5 leagues. This list of schools that could afford the step up at that point is rather limited.

SEC ponders 'Division IV'

DESTIN, Fla. -- The Southeastern Conference sent a strong message to the NCAA on Friday: provide the Power Five some autonomy or they'll form their own division.

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said if the Power Five conferences -- which also include the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big 12, the Big Ten and the Pac-12 -- don't get the flexibility needed to create their own bylaws, the next step would be to move to "Division IV."

"It's not something we want to do," Slive said on the final day of the SEC meetings. "We want the ability to have autonomy in areas that has a nexus to the well-being of student athletes. I am somewhat optimistic it will pass, but if it doesn't, our league would certainly want to move to a Division IV. My colleagues, I can't speak for anybody else, but I'd be surprised if they didn't feel the same way."

I actually think at this point, schools separating themselves over what they can financially manage really helps us. Whether that remains to be the case is yet to be seen.

Sounds like we need to finalize the dreams of our schools forefather and create a Conference that includes BYU,LU, Notre Dame(football only), and any other religious school with out a home... Or just join the BiG 12 with BYU so they have an even #

It is cool seeing an article linked written by an old FlameFan poster referencing a story written by a guy in Austin that I used to work alongside. Kevin is correct that BYU would LOVE ot be int he Big XII but it isn't happening. It is looking more & more like they will have to join the American for football to have any chance to be part of the new playoff system and to fill their schedule.

BYU is loath to join a G5 league and only would do it under duress. But if they made such a move it would only be in concert with Boise State.

Heard an interesting theory from Rick Neuheisel today. He thinks All the FBS Schools not included in the Top 5 AQ conferences should move to a full Spring football schedule and workout new contract deals with Networks.
