I think it is more on VMI not wanting to play us than us not wanting to play them. VMI is moving to the SoCon where they'll revive their traditional rivalries and would rather play W&M, JMU and Richmond OOC before us.

If we do continue to play ANYONE from the Big South if we do go to FBS it should be Coastal or Chuck South. I would be totally fine with never playing Presby or VMI again.

Why would we want to play Coastal? The whole point of playing an FCS team when you're FBS is for an easy win.

Um, Coastal is by far the dumbest rivalry in the history of LU sports. If we go FBS, I hope we completely forget that Coastal exist. Maybe revive a baseball series every couple of years, but that's it.

And why should it be Chuck South? VMI's away crowd is bigger than Chuck South's home crowd.

I mentioned VMI because I've always loved playing them. Their fans are fantastic, they bring the freshmen in, and it's just all around a great little local rivalry. Not to mention, a lot of their alumni live in the area. So, you're always going to have a good crowd. Putting them in the same category as Presby, is ridiculous.

I get why we won't be playing them again, but I agree with those who feel that situation is disappointing. I have always enjoyed the series with the Keydets in spite of the fact that it hasn't exactly been an equitable relationship.

Since you guys were on the topic of us playing old big south teams once we go FBS I thought this was interesting.

South Alabama FB 2015 Schedule change. The Jags will now open against Garner Webb on Sept 5th and host NC State on Sept 22

]If we go FBS, in a perfect scenario, I'd rather not play a Big South team in any sport ever again. If we were ever to play a Big South team again it should be a last resort and I would want it to be someone halfway decent from the Big South which by process of elimination would be Coastal. Maybe we play Radford again in baseball, unless we can get a regular series going with UVA or VT.

How did they get NC State to play them at home? Are Debbie Yow and Dave Doeren really that stupid?

I would be fine playing VMI now and again if we make FBS. Would be an easy win against an FCS school, and good exposure and money for VMI. But I too would prefer not to see an OOC series against them if we stay FCS. If we end up stuck where we are for the foreseeable future, IMHO we need to work really hard on strengthening our OOC schedule, getting some solid FCS wins every season, and making the Top 25 on a regular basis.

So does that mean no more Brevard or Bryant? I chortle audibly.

Dumb in the way the rivalry was established. The games have always been very entertaining though (many times in a frustrating way though). Particularly in football and baseball.

Didn't we go like three years without one win against them in baseball? The only close finish that I can remember in football was last year, and that didn't end in our favor. Even after that game though, I have no genuine dislike for Coastal more than I do for Gardner Webb. It's not a real rivalry. The only thing we have in common with Coastal is that we're both decent in an atrocious conference. Meh. For me, the way it was established is just icing on the cake in terms of the dumbness of the rivalry.

We had a tense rivalry with Radford at one time. VMI has always had a friendly rivalry feel to it. I would say JMU is a solid rival, although, it's hard to do anything with that since they don't want to play us. And I think there is something there with ODU. A game against any of those schools would be much more significant to me than a game against Coastal.

I don't like this sidebar thing at all. We are acting like we are already FBS and talking down our current conference members, that may remain conference member with us, for many more years.
As far as Debbie Yow being stupid? You do know she is a LU grad............... don't you? :D

Not according to Wikipedia. And even if she was an LU grad, I would still hate her for all the crap she talked about Gary Williams and the Maryland Athletic Department as a whole.

And as a former resident of Maryland, I'm aware of what she did there, both to Gary Williams and Ralph Friedgen if memory serves. Oh, well, we are all human...
