+1
He would not be taking these flights if there was no point in swaying their (SBC presidents) opinions of us. He is also the best person in which to represent us.

Not accepting bad coaching, like we are obviously doing now. The fact that Layer is still employed shows to me how little is cared about basketball. Just my $.02
I agree and disagree with you. Our problem isn't necessarily with accepting bad coaching. Our problem is with looking at one positive and letting that block our vision from all of the negative. Layer got an extension because he won five consecutive games. Because he still has a few years on his contract, we aren't going to eat that yet.

We give our coaches every resource in the world, and then when they don't succeed, we pretend like they did.

I am with Sly though, basketball and football do not have to be mutually exclusive anymore. There is too much money in football, which is why schools like Duke are starting to invest in the game.

Has anyone considered putting the 2 themes together on these current posts?? Hmmmmm we didn't fire layer and both JB and JR have been flying nonstop to every sunbelt school preparing for an invitation!!!! Last time I checked it wasn't smart to show instability in a company by firing top people when your selling the business to a new potential client. Plus when your devoting 70-90% of your time to flying around the country meeting with schools the last priority would be to under take a new project of hiring a Basketball Coach..

Companies downsize all the time before they sell. Shows potential buyers less liabilities and it generally causes their stock to go up
If you get rid of a coach who has lost 60+ games in 3 years it shows you are shoring up a potential source of weakness to the Conference ratings.
So, no. So you may want to re-check

It wouldn't surprise me if there was a possible link between Layer's job situation and Sun Belt conversations. EVERYTHING in his program is fine, except for wins and losses on the court. He has the resources, the facilities, the staff and it is believed the incoming talent to make it happen. We all also generally agree he is the right kind of person to make it all happen. It just hasn't happened yet.

Combine this with a contract just extended last year, and what is the tangible guaranteed benefit to making a change now against the cost? LU may have more money than it can spend - for now - but it doesn't give the power that be a right to spend it frivolously. So is it really worth it to buyout the rest of the contract, and spend considerable time and money finding a new coach, when everything is right in the program except wins?

Add to that the Sun Belt dynamic. Not only would time and energy spent conducting a coaching search take away the same resources from getting this Sun Belt invite done, but I do believe it would risk sending some instability. Why take the risk?

The other side of the Sun Belt angle is, why make a change now when you could make a change prior to LU's first season of Sun Belt play. IIRC, that would be 2015-16, coinciding with the end of Layer's current contract. So let's give a great person and representative of the LU more than enough chance to prove he can turn it around in the Big South, giving him the term of his contract, and simply not renew if he can't. Then, we get to chase a higher profile candidate on the guarantee we actually are going to the Sun Belt.

If we really are headed for the Sun Belt - as I staunchly believe we are - what is the benefit of making this change now? Once we announce we're headed there, does it really even matter to anything but our pride how much we win in the Big South?

Looks like another quick meeting for JLFJR. Interesting to see if any of the presidents make trips into Lynchburg in the coming weeks leading up to their spring meetings

Why take the risk?
That is a HUGE 'except'. Why take the risk that it WILL get better? With all the resources listed it wouldn't be a huge risk to make a move. Could not those same resources produce a coach who can do everything right AND not lose 60 games in 3 years? If we were talking about a one or two year blip you'd have a point.
If the bottom line is we don't want to eat the buyout, then fine. But let's not try to put Febreeze in a septic tank.

I clearly believe that their is a link between the realignment situation and Dale Earnhardt layer Sr and liberty's future in basketball can we all agree that the possibility of micro management by JR is due for a change ?? Otherwise we would have a new coach right?? I love his progressive hands on personality/character but can we get some deeper respectable delegation of power ??? JB needs a right hand man!!!!! Call ME!!! Hahah no but for real...

Question, do you have a twin who averages 75 shots and 25 points per game in a rec league? Does he also believe that he's the answer to the entire LU athletics department?
