They have snow ploiws. They just don't know how, where, and when to use them. Can't tell you how many times I have seen plows driving down a snowy road with the blade riding high. Or they just sit on the side of 460 waiting. Not sure what for, just waiting.

DC can barely handle 3 to 4 inches of snow it will be entertaining to see how they handle 6 to 10 inches of it. This florida boy will be staying inside except for about 20 minutes to build an awesome snowman with my daughter.

I have 4 day weekend already planned this weekend which may now turn into a 5 day. I'll take it!

I have wanted 1 big storm this year and finally it looks like we are going to get it up here. After this passes I will welcome 75 degree weather as soon as possible.

I think the Pentagon has several Chinooks reserved to bring in essential personnel such as yourself. 8)

Those would be VDOT, not the city. I think the city has more than half the number of plows that Atlanta has... Really. I heard the Atlanta mayor say that they have 30 plows. The city plows do a decent job, and I have never been unable to get to work due to snow. This won't be any different.

I don't have that kind of training, wouldn't want any kind of safety violations.

I'm so sick of snow, people in Maryland completely forget how to drive when it snows. If people even see snow, whether it's on the road or not, they drive 10-15 miles under the speed limit. :frustrated :furious

my favorite is seeing the road graders out on the roads "plowing". I'd be worried about the damage being done to the asphalt except they repave everything every 12 months anyway.

Haven't seen a grader plowing here in a while, but they are a pretty common sight in places that get lots of snow. I followed one for a bit when they finally reopened US 29 back in Dec '09; it was plowing the unopened lane, BIG blade up front.

Actually graders probably can do a better job of getting down close to the road surface without damaging the road. They are just slower and can't dump salt or sand.

Need some advice here.

I am hoping to travel to Richmond from Lynchburg today but I won't be able to leave Lynchburg until 4pm. I know the snow might have started here already, but I also know that it's supposed to start later further east. Unfortunately, I am driving a sports car that will lose control with a quarter of an inch of snow. Do you guys think I should risk making the drive at 4? Or should I just plan to stay in Lynchburg for the night?

You should have bought a Subaru! :D

I think you will be fine. It's going to be later and you will be out in front of it

Thanks!

I love Subarus! I drive a Mazda RX-8. It's a heck of car, it just hates the snow.

I'm looking to buy a car soon. My fiance's brother has an outback as well, it's an older model and he likes it to. Might have to give that a look.

I appreciate the advice Purple. Hopefully, it will hold up just long enough for me to get some gas and get out of here.

Well, long story. My class got out at 4 and I had to take the bus from LU to my apartment (cornerstone). That bus ride took around an hour and by the time I got back it was almost 5. By then, there was already half an inch or so on the ground, and it was falling heavy, so I stayed here.

Around 5:15, my fiance (who lives in Richmond) texted me that it was already coming down pretty heavy there. If I could have gotten back here by 4 like usual, I probably would have tried it but that bus ride did me in.

Also, why do Lynchburg drivers feel the need to STOP in acceleration lanes? I see this all the time, even on great weather days. I just don't get it.

Not here, generally...although when there is heavy traffic, people have a hard time figuring out how to merge so it works like a zipper.
