Agreed. But some of those decisions were made based on Geography which is a strike against us that we can't control. But a strike that has been used against us is our lack of success at the level we are at and THAT is something we can control. I would rather move up with our heads held high KNOWING we can compete and win at the next level as opposed to hoping we can.

Where did you get these numbers? I didn't go back throught the past 4 or 5 years, but this year Liberty averaged 15,030 fans per home game. No team in the Sun Belt averaged less that 15,500. Also, there were only 8 football teams in the Sun Belt this season. Unless you're going back and counting former Sun Belt members, Liberty definitely isn't outdrawing every school in the conference. In fact, they aren't outdrawing any of them at this point.

Louisiana-Lafayette & Arkansas State both draw much better than us. We are on par with everybody else that was in the league this year including the departing Western Kentucky who had what was really a neutral site game in Nashville to pump up their numbers.

The scheduling of Brevard was obviously a mistake on multiple levels.

How many at-large playoff berths has Liberty ever received (rhetorical question)? So, we shouldn't go FBS because we might not get a bowl bid? Seriously?

To me, the question is do you want to play at the highest level of football (FBS) or not? If so, and given chances of an invite by ANY conference, I'd say we better take the first train out. Sun Belt or whatever, there might not be another train unless the whole system changes. I'm for playing FBS football if any chance comes for a lot of reasons.

Unfortunately, I think it might be a moot point. I don't sense an invitation from an FBS conference coming from any one. Probably the best hope is that the Sun Belt gets desperate enough for that 12th team and gets tired of waiting for someone else. We're sure not No. 1 on their list. I'm not even sure we're even on their list. Kind of like the list for FCS playoff at-large consideration.

I know it was rhetorical, but since you asked, the answer is we've had 2 at-large berths...both in men's golf (You never specified what sprot LUminary :-P)

This was more of the point that I was trying to make in terms of numbers.

Someone made the argument that our lack of at-large playoff bids should prove that we aren't going to receive a bowl bid. For one, playoff bids versus bowl bids are different. Your team receives a playoff bid based on your resume, not necessarily your attractiveness or numbers. On the contrary, because bowl games are simply one game and ironically meant for T.V. ratings rather than a competitive match-up, bowl games will generally favor the attraction of a team more-so than the competitiveness. Obviously, there are exceptions to both of these rules, but I don't believe there will be any correlation to our lack of at-large playoff bids to our at-large bowl births.

As to Haize's point about competitiveness. I do agree to an extent. I agree that we should do everything we can do to compete now, in the Big South. We need to win the conference out-right and be competitive in playoffs. Considering Co-Big South champions as an accomplishment should be abandoned, it's completely embarrassing.

However, where I disagree with Haize is on if we were to receive an invite, we should decline. FBS invites are fairly common now, but I believe they will be scarce in say 10 years. If we want to go FBS, we need to do it now rather than later. At some point in the future, the NCAA likely will block FCS teams from moving up to FBS. Even if they don't, I believe that FBS conferences are actively trying to phase-out the SunBelt. Fewer conferences = more bowl bids for the current conferences. We saw what happened to the WAC. Once that happens, I don't think you'll see any invites for a while.

I think the best course for Liberty to take would be to accept an invitation from the Sun Belt, while hoping that the C-USA or American conference offer. Even if they don't offer, and even if the Sun Belt were to phase out, I think we could succeed as an independent. Some of you worry about scheduling issues but I think because of the fantastic local FCS schools, we could put together some solid schedules. A 12 game schedule with 2 FCS schools (say W&M and Richmond), wouldn't be a bad deal.

I understand the point your trying to make Haize, and when you consider some of the crazies on this board, it is well appreciated. But I do disagree with it. I just see way to many advantages to playing any type of FBS football versus any type of FCS football.

Va thanks for the kind words but you are wrong and I am right. HA! I just think our stock would grow higher faster being competitive where we are at as opposed to languishing at the next level. And if as you say the Sun Belt is targeted for elimination, if we aren't competitive we may not get invited somewhere else.

How many D-1 transfers are currently on the LU roster?? (football team) -- Do you guys realize that once you go up to FBS that these Walt Aikens of the world will not be on the roster as much if at all??? Look at Marshall as an example.... in no way shold LU move up until it makes playoffs for several years.

Fine example to watch is ASU in Boone. Lets see how they do with their move up.

I am conflicted regarding the possible move to a BCS conference. However, history says that every time we have made a move up, we have been very competitive at the next level.
Regardless of what we do, or don't do, we should win the BSC outright every year, based on our resources, facilities and ability to recruit nationally.
No more moral victories or Co-championships. :)

Not if this is going to turn into a Lucy / Charlie Brown kick the football thing again.

"Did you hear that LU talked 2 conferences at the IMG meetings in NY?"
"Really? what 2 conferences"
"Well, I know but I cant tell you"

That's usually how these things go. ITs not endemic just to you BYD but countless times on many threads people just come on here to say they "know something" but they can't tell us. They apparently, just want people to know that they "know something".

We've talked to multiple conferences multiple times. Commissioners don't really have a problem with us and think we'd be good from an athletic standpoint, but no one wants to deal with the presidents and negative reaction.
