The answer is Not just NO, but "HELL NO" the season wasnt a success!

The resources , money, 40 uniforms that go into the Football team and beating CSU to be CO Champs Again makes it a succes...?

Let's get real here folks, especially your post there CiderJIMMY -- LU was actually 6-4 not 8-4, you played 2 cupcakes!! I havent looked but I doubt Rocco played 2 D-2 schools... If I were Jerry Jr I would question the schedule and why cant we make the playoffs with 24 teams not 16....??? Be glad hes a busniess lawyer not a sports critic...

Rocco has less non-conference openings to fill in Richmond. And there isn't the baggage playing at Robins Stadium as there is for some FCS schools scheduling games with us. But I get your point.

I say no. 3 out of 4 of the losses were lost in the 4th quarter, including Liberty being outscored 55-14 in those. We had 4 games that were known if Liberty won, they would be in the playoffs. 3 of those slipped out of their hands. To me Gill's overall coaching tenure at Liberty is looking better but this season was NOT a success.

Tough question. As I reflect back, we may have been 4 plays away from being 12-0.

The Coastal Carolina fake punt will be what I will always remember about this season.

It failed to meet my expectations but no it wasn't a failure.
Disappointing? Heck yeah.
This was a 10 win team or better on paper. BUTT as the Big Tuna says, "you are what your record says you are." And that's why we play the games. So allow me to "excuse" our season away...
What if our two DII games were FCS and we had won, were 8-4 and received an at-large bid?
What if AA didn't make a bad decision and didn't get hurt trying to come back too quickly and we had him against Kent State, ODU and CC, etc.
What if we had made just one more first down against Kent State, ODU and CC?
What if JL didn't have an off year and miss so many field goals?
What if our OC and TE/FB position coach threw more frequently to his talented stable of TEs earlier in the season like we did vs. CS?
What if it had "monsooned" during U of R's possession deep in their end of the field instead of ours?
What if our PA announcer never said "and that's another Liberty 3rd down?"
And so on...

Flamefans forever.
Go Flames!!!

BigSouthKing, my goal is to post this each time you say 6-4. It's not really fair to not count the D2 wins if you're still going to count the FBS losses. LU was 6-2 against FCS teams, if you want to use the "some games shouldn't count" system.

"A day after the Appalachian State/Georgia Southern announcement, Craig Haley, who covers the FCS for The Sports Network, wrote an article headlined “End of the FCS as we know it is looming.”

His most damning line: “It seems the FCS level can only take so many more hits while it grasps for national relevance in college football.”

At this rate, FCS may soon stand for Frankly, Can’t Survive."

This is not the same FCS of 2008...a number on quality FCS programs have gone the FBS route so it is less competitive to be a top 25 program and with playoffs expanded to 24 teams there is greater opportunity to get in the field. Is LU football with its substantial financial commitment about the following?
#1. Earn the BSC automatic bid
#2. Beat a quality CAA, Southern Conference program
#3. Earn a FCS playoff bid
If these are the goals than obviously the season was not a success.

How in the world can you compare what the schedule is like for a UR program that A. Comes from a larger conference and B. Has a much richer football history than LU????

You must compare the kind of schedule Rocco had while at Liberty and he dealt with the same kind of crap here.

Comparing our schedule with a school like Richmond is ridiculous. Even for you.

It will be interesting to watch the development of LU and JMU over next 3 to 5 years. Bourne seems to place accountability for the fact that JMU has the second highest FCS budget in state to LU: "“The way our program is evaluated currently is we look at our facilities, our funding, our university support with regard to donors, alumni and fans, and (based on) how we compare to other FCS schools, we expect to be good on an annual basis,” Bourne said.
That translates to regular contention for CAA championships and playoff qualification, Bourne said. According to data provided by the U.S. Department of Education for the most recently reported year (July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012), JMU’s football budget was $6,608,363. Among state FCS schools, only Liberty’s was greater."

Bourne sets clear expectations: When the subject rises with coaching candidates, “I think the best information I can provide to them is to say ‘Read what our consultant report says.’ We are well-poised for a move, if and when an opportunity were presented. We would have to look at that decision independently, based on all of the facts and the evaluation at that point in time.
“What I can tell them is we are at the absolute pinnacle of FCS football with our potential and what we have to offer. Our goal is to make sure we compete on an annual basis at the top.”

How can this season be call a success? LU is given facilities and budgets that way surpass the need to be satisfied with D2 wins and a level of BSC wins to be called co-champs while never seeing an FCS playoff field.

Yes, but need to win a couple of the close ones next season. This is interesting, Liberty finished higher in the Sagarin Ratings than ODU.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sagarin/

http://odubleedblue.com/odu-finishes-ah ... s-in-2013/

The bad news about this sagarin rating is that ODU finished behind 28 FCS schools, including Liberty, Richmond and Maine. Expect that to change next season.
