+1

and outside of Liberty, they hadn't done nothing to warrant a home game against the likes of App State, NDSU, etc. getting teams like Montana, JMU you're going to have to schedule a series like a 2 to 1 or a 3 to 2. like they did with JMU. I know JB doesn't like doing that.

We already have a 1 and 1 with Montana.

Having as many as 20 more on scholarship than an FCS team is why ODU isn't counted in the top 25 or allowed to play in the play-offs. This was a big game against a team with more depth- why is that hard to see?

Teams have to bus from Roanoke to play Virginia Tech.
Teams bus from Charlotte or Winston to play Appalachian State.

And teams charter buses even when they can fly directly into the game city.
Orig. Piedmont Airlines use to fly Boeing 737-200's into LYH everyday. Found this 1969 photo on flicker. What's the aircraft limit today. Could a Airbus 319 or Boeing 737-400 get in?

A319, 737-4, no problem. Lynchburg's runway exceeds the length of DCA, so most planes that a team will charter would be able to use LYH. When that photo was taken, the runway was only 5'600 ft- now it is 7'005 ft.

My overall point about ODU as a "big game" or "not a big game" was mostly set to the backdrop of our entire schedule. The games are all relative to each other. From Kent State to ODU to Brevard? Seriously?! If we can up the caliber of the entire schedule, I would hope we could learn to win these "big games."

That said, it has been refreshing to see other Big South teams have the success they are having this year. That's good for the conference, and ultimately the Flames. When Kennesaw State and Monmouth officially join, hopefully they can take the place of Brevard and Kentucky Wesleyan on our schedule.

So it sounds like the problem to me is you beat LU its a so what, but if you lose its a OMG. LU can't get into a FBS conf for "whatever" reason, but in playing the games they can neither win nor lose. The problem I will say is that playing it to close to the vest in games is killing LU, they should be wanting to stomp people to help make a name for themselves.

I for one would like to see a school like LU go to a pure spread attack like an ODU, because tbh they are playing at a little disadvantage, as compared to other schools. I think by doing something like that you can garner a little more attn. on the program, get some of the borderline better kids to come here and still put a real good product on the field. And then by "hopefully" putting up points like an ODU, Oregon or Baylor you garner the program that kind of extra attn. that maybe a conf could be looking for. Could you imagine LU being an "explosive" style offense like that, that is what gets kids wanting to come to your school, getting more fans in the seats that may cheer a little better or louder, and attn. from other conferences because of the style of play.

Imagine Woodrum or Shaty (who broke all sorts of records in FL) or Masha in a four wide set with Petey and Shells outside and Gabe and Glover, DK, Pratt in the slot, with DJ being in the backfield complimented with AA or DR. I think something like that with some up-tempo could cause problems for defenses yet excitement for fans and the offense as a whole.

BuryYourDuke wrote:I would definitely prefer a spread offense. There were times when we ran a spread option type offense with Mike brown at QB, but it definitely wasn't anything like what Oregon does.
You are right spread option as a just a formation for a couple of plays or when you are down at the end of the game is totally different that running the spread as your base offense. (every down) I look at our personnel as compared to ODU and we match up almost just as well as they do at the WR position except they throw 10x more than we do so that is going to skew the numbers towards there WR's alot more.

Pinkard 6' 182 = Petey 6'2 190
Roberts 6'2 190 = Shells 6'1 175
Vaughn 5'8 175 = Gabe 5'11 195
Bailey 5'11 185 = Glover 5'10 190
Godwyn 5'10 195 = DJ 5'10 190

to me not much difference other than the HC's offensive philosophy and belief that the players that they attain can play in space better than the defensive guys that are employed to stop them.

I would like to actually see us run the Nevada Pistol with Masha or Woodrum at the trigger and Macon or Kaigler or Rice with Fualaau or Carrington Mosley flexed out in what AY calls the "rifle formation" and bring Abnar in jet motion for a few plays much like we did with BJ Hayes.

You could experiment with that this year using AA (if he is finally healthy) and Gagliardi with Pratt coming in jet motion as we have done the last couple weeks.

I've said this before but I think the real issue is deeper than the coaching staff. Gill is a solid coach and the right man at Liberty. At least for now, we can and should end that discussion. On the other hand, I do think there is a serious problem within athletics; a certain mentality if you will.

If you look at all of our sports, we have always had trouble competing with tough in-state teams. For example, look at how JMU has owned us for the past decade. We can't buy a win against them. Even our girls team has had trouble in the past winning these games. It's a culture problem.

Let me stress that I do not believe this is a problem with the athletic director. However, I do believe that there is a mentality within the athletic department that limits our success.

You realize that if you take out the blow out games by any team.....more often then not the team doesn't score alot :D
He did study and play under the master of the wishbone Tom Osbourne and they 'ran' up some big numbers
