TH- that's sort of the draw for games at LU compared to somewhere else. It is geared for families to bring their kids and have a Family Atmosphere. We are unique in that. It can be argued that is why the Baptist side is so 'tame' compared to the Student side. They are more interested in watching their kids run around and socialize with other parents who have their kids running around then they are about the actual game. I'm not saying it is right or wrong I'm just saying you won't see that type of atmosphere anywhere else especially at the FBS level. For my part having kids run around is more irritating than dealing with the drunk guy behind me

I see your point. I guess Wake Forest would fit into the same narrow "family oriented" category. Iv'e attended a lot of their games. Nothing but pure class over there. Then there's East Carolina .... oh never mind, Just kidding Jeff  . As far as the Baptist side goes, everyone around me cheers loudly. My guest cheers so loud her husband rolls in his seat laughing at her. There's no lack of enthusiasm on Sigs row either. Moving from the student side to the other, with us old farts (sorry), has to be difficult. Sis and I have thought about setting on the student side one game to enjoy it close up.

Really? You are going to compare us to Wake Forest? They take win and cheese fandom to a whole other level. As we strive to be a 'Big Time' program I certainly hope our goal is not to be like WFU

That's true .... a lot of 60-70 year old Doctors in the stands at Wake. :D . We are opening a medical school, right? Never know, in a few years our stands might look a lot like Wakes.

You didn't commit on my ECU line ..... speaking of drunk'n fools. If you think we could learn something from ODU fans you should go to a ECU game.

I like our fans and our culture. The big question is, can we fill 30,000 seats someday with folks that feel the same?

TH I can tell you that for the most part people only stand up and cheer when t-shirts are being thrown on the baptist side. There are exceptions but most of them are player's family. In fact, I've sat in two different sections the last two games and more people stood up to cheer and got excited for the marching band than they did football. Even thought the overall record hasn't panned out the way we would've wanted it to, the student section has been PHENOMENAL this year. I know as the team wins more and plays better quality teams at home, it'll grow. I agree with SCAR that a home playoff game and a win would be a huge shot in the arm to help that.

Good point. And it is a better vintage than at ODU. It also probably doesn't have a screw on top or come from a box

Beating number 6 Coastal next week would be a nice shot in the arm!! I'll be disappointed with less than 20,000 in attendance. All the reserved and premium seats are sold out.

Really? Does one have to stand the whole game to be concidered a "fan" of the game. When I was a college kid I cheered like a college kid, and stood most of the game like a college kid. But I am now north of 50, and I realize that standing the whole game is a little tough on the feet and legs after a long week at work. I do stand and HOLLAR when something happens that is worthy of it. But standing just to be standing is NOT what makes me, or anyone else a fan.

Have you ever been to big-time program's football game? It's not about cheering (or being a fan) when your team does something worthy of your support. It's about recognizing that being boisterous about your support at the right times during the game can actually have an effect on the outcome. That's why whenever you watch a big game on t.v., you always hear a deafening roar when the home team's defense is on the field and an odd silence when their offense is on the field (if your fanbase is such that it actually buys in to this philosophy).

It's the reason why these programs continue to grow their stadiums at any cost. Yes it's about ticket revenue, but I think it's equally (maybe more so) about expanding the home-field advantage.

I agree, I am north of 60, but I am planning on standing the whole game on Saturday. We need a very loud crowd to put the boys over the top this weekend, we need to be a little crazy. Once we experience that, resulting in a big win, I hope it will be the start of a more boisterous crowd experience. The Baptist side isn't that bad, we have some good fans over there, but we are put to shame by the students.
I believe a very loud crowd could have a profound effect on the game. I plan to do my part.

No more moral victories or shared Championships.

No ma'am, standing does not make you a bigger fan. If you spend time in stands, and I know you do, it's pretty common the only time people get really into the games is during the timeouts. I sit down more this year than I have in previous years but I do get loud for 3rd and stand and cheer for touchdowns. I know there are people that cheer and really get behind the team but that is usually a small percentage of fans on that side.

Maybe some people should spend their off week going to see a Virginia Tech game. They have a pretty good game day atmosphere. It's better than UVA's. Of course there aren't a bunch of little kids running around but it will give you a better idea.
BYD- I applaud your effort to get a membership in the Dark Side but you are part of The System now and we don't take sell outs :flamingdevil :dramaqueen :-D

All you would hear is a bunch of moaning and complaining about drunk people being loud and obnoxious. And the ticket prices!?!

:I chortle audibly.:
And that's just the players.

TH, i wish people knew that was my row so i wouldn't have to run in 2 hours before the game and mark my territory. haha

there are a bunch of regulars in our area and the newbies around there are pretty tuned into the game. we may lose a bunch of noise because the area down below us isn't usually crowded.

most of my friends and family have younger children or grand children so the 2nd thing i mention to them is that the games are kid friendly. 1st being the game itself.

i have been to a bunch of games in my time at the "BIG" schools and i do feel that the general attendees at LU games aren't getting hammered in the parking lot. and trust me i don't have any problems with anybody getting hammered. and no you don't have to be drunk to cheer and scream really loud but iv'e found out that a few drunks can equal about 15 of the normal fans in the noise making department.

i thought ODU was pretty loud at times but it wasn't constant through out the game. nobody cheers for an incomplete pass or getting stopped on 4th down 3 or 4 times. i'm sure if we are down 10 with less than 4 minutes to go return a punt for a TD and score the winning touchdown against Coastal with just a little bit of time remaining the BILL will be as loud as ODU.

feel free to come on up to our area and we will all get loud, just don't take my seats. haha

i would do more if i could get the tension test numbers on that cable i hang on too. everybody around OUR area does a good job i think. didn't mean for that to come across as the regulars weren't making noise cause they do. just meant that the different people in the area each game seems to cheer also. i think we have a pretty good group. stop by and say hey.

Oh, I knew what you meant. I took no offense at all. I simply meant that we, meaning me and you, do our part. We have talked a few times. White hair and goatee. I'll speak to you again at homecoming.

sigmo7 - we just need some more people to come and tailgate down there with us so we can get them wound up before game time!!

Considering the lack of "big name" competition at home, our fans are top notch. I was in UVA's Scott Stadium in '79/early 80's when it used to only seat 29,000 or so and it was NEVER as loud against ACC competition as the Bill is on any given game at less than 17,000 most games...or as pathetic as the UVA fans were against Ball State. (This coming from a UVA fan, before LU even existed) As many that STAYED for the KY Wesleyan blowout, including my crew, we have a great future for stadium atmosphere and attendance.

BTW Sigmo7, as you well know, my wife makes up for ten LU fans...or 3 drunks :)

IMHO Class of '85 Local fan GO FLAMES!
