Former LU and ODU student....

Was wondering what your impressions were of the game, game day atmosphere, that kinda thing.

The stadium is ancient, so there is only so much improvement possible.

Did anybody tailgate? Where our fans cordial. It appears the JMU fans are pretty rude to LU, just wondering if things were ok for LU fans this weekend.

Article in the paper said that our AD and your AD are buddies and would love to have a multi year series in the future.

Good luck the rest of the way!

I wasn't at this game, but I did go to the ODU homecoming game last year. My thought..... HURRY UP AND BUILD THE NEW STADIUM! ODU is an up and coming program, primed for success. The school needs to fund a state of the art 45,000 stadium. All the pieces for success are there for ODU minus facilities. ODU currently plays in a large high school stadium.

I suspect it may take a day or so for those who attended to be able to give objective reactions based on the horrendous emotional experience of most. I will say the team deserves better television coverage than a cable system production. The homer announcers were to be expected. The constant commentary was a bit over-the-top. And yes, I know we hear this every week from opposing fans about our production as well.

Give us some time, we've been playing football 5 years.
I remember going to LU games at the city field....

The gameday environment seemed far better to me than here at Liberty. It may have been due to homecoming, and them having fraternities and sororities, but there were tailgaters everywhere! I'm always in the student section for home games so not sure how the noise compared to us at LU, but everyone cheered at ODU, not just the students which made it pretty loud.

Maybe with good reason. :)

Yea and none of them stayed home because, you know, it's Liberty ....

ODU fans are smart fans. We noticed that at the BracketBusters game a few years back when they would cheer defensive stops. Our fans respond to fireworks and video promptings. ODU's respond for good play.

Our home crowds are improving BYD...with more of the kids from the last few years, myself included now, ending up on the "Baptist side", they are getting more involved and it shows on the "live noise meter". you're talking about reversing about 30 years of supposed "fan apathy"...Rome wasn't built in a day ya know (as the cliche says)

That's because our fans are more properly identified as 'spectators'. You OBVIOUSLY were not a Sport Management major :D

The game day atmosphere was great. At first. Then it went downhill. The drunks were awful, a few older fans were nice but we got the same ole weak Jerry's Kids and other slurs from students. Lastly, one fan stopped right beside me and my friend and said the most vulgar words and made the most vulgar gestures at us that I have ever experienced. And no mistake he was speaking directly at us. I think plenty of people saw him and heard him but no one stopped it. I'm not provoking this behavior, sitting down and minding my own business idk why it happened or why he chose us. I'll never go back. As a matter of fact, I've decided I'm done with away games, I'm too old for that crap.

I won't say never, (if we ever make the playoffs, I will go) but I am right there with you. My last away game was NC State, they were actually pretty decent. The W&M fans were horrible, some of the worst I have seen anywhere. Besides, I get spoiled going to LU home games, great seats, reserved parking, no drunks, silly insults, etc. it is hard to go to an away game, too much trouble, too old. :)

I'm so sorry to hear that happened to you. There is no getting around you guys catch garbage because of the Christianity aspect. They know your not gonna punch them in the face.... very brave. If you were hindu than you would be exotic and "advanced", but believe in Christ and you are somehow backward.... now getting in someones face and saying vulgar things isn't backward or anything.
They do usually post on the video board a ph number to call if you see or experience anything that isn't right.
I'm glad most of you didn't run into that garbage.

^^^^^^^^ These. We have spectators not fans. Oh no! Someone said naughties to you. Oh no, there were people who consumed too much alcohol. Let's just stay in our pretty little bubble and away from the great unwashed masses. LU DOES have a good reputation of having fans that travel, I hope we can keep that up. But grow some thicker skin and learn to deal with it. Sure, it's not right. Sure we take excellent care of opposing teams fans when they visit. But to take your tent and go home because some people said something disparaging.

Purple, I suspect you are a lot younger than me. I will put my being a "fan" of LU against anyone here. I hope we keep traveling well and I wish that we had more fans instead of spectators as well. But I was speaking only for myself and maybe I should have made it clear, that I don't attend any other sporting events for the same reasons mentioned above. I don't need to fight the drunks, poor parking, lousy seats, etc. Besides I recentlyt had open heart surgery, triple bypass, heart aneurism, had to retire early and am medically disabled. Somehow I have still managed to drive 3 hours to all the home games for many years, a Flames Club member since before it was called the Talon Club and been to many away games during that period as well. Hope you get old some day too my friend. :)

Yeah, not attending any other sporting events does make a difference Especially since it is for the same reasons. Not going for health reasons also make it different. Not going just because someone said something rude or was drunk...not so much. Of course, you make my point about being in our bubble. We do have a much better game atmosphere now then years ago. Parking is not nearly as bad. Ingress and egress is very good. And plenty of room to tailgate. We can't expect everyone else to have the same standards that we do

I found it very funny that until 1:20 were left you couldn't hear a pin drop really from the ODU faithful, then all of a sudden they are the best fans ever. I would only think that by the way the stadium is set up that it was louder becuz it was more enclosed. I would agree that becuz LU does not have frats and sororities that would give a nod to ODU, but kids are gonna be kids regardless. Only thing I would get rid of at LU is the move the chains line, that is a bit cheesy to me, and i'm sure there is a better one they could use. Everything else seems fine to me.

What was nice is that I could hear a spirited Liberty contingent on the audio of the TV broadcast.

Since we are the Flames I say we just light something on fire or something. People like that kind of stuff.
