Basically, here's the deal:
Their offense has been virtually unstoppable by FCS opponents. Heineke chucks it around like he's Peyton Manning...except he runs it all over the place, too. Our defense has an enormous task ahead of them this week. But..
Their defense is actually as bad as their offense is good. We are talking half-eaten Swiss cheese here. If Josh and the boys can get it going and we can find a way to stay with them and come up with a few turnovers, we could pull something truly huge on Saturday.

This would make me VERY happy.

We're talking about a team that is 22-3 against FCS competition the last 2+ regular seasons. A team that just beat a CAA opponent by nearly the same score that we beat a DII opponent. This is the same team that destroyed Coastal 63-35 in the playoffs last year. The same Coastal who beat us by 24 points.

Don't get ahead of yourselves.

They are good, but I have to say not as good as people expected them to be going into this year. There was a lot of talk that they would beat either ECU or Maryland. Neither game was really close and Maryland blew them out. They beat a 1 and 4 Citadel team 59 to 58 AT HOME. One of the Citadel´s losses was to CSU. They can be had. An effort like we had against Stoney Brook last year would result in a win IMHO. We haven´t done that on the road in a long time. I would love to see it.

I may be labeled as a 'hater' for this, but since this is a road game with potential playoff implications (i.e., a 'good' win) against an in-state opponent, we will probably lose. ODU is a really good team. Now I do agree with oldflame's assessment of the ODU and agree they can be had, I just don't think we'll do it. I hope I'm wrong, would love to see the upset. But I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Stony Brook turned the ball over against us. If ODU turns it over as much as SBU did then we have a shot.

I'm 50/50 on this game. I can see us losing big and I can see us winning. I'm not sure where we are as a team but feel pretty good about it. However, I know nothing about ODU other than they score in bunches (which is a great way to draw interest!). So can we score with them? Can our DB's make some plays? Will the system they play be so unlike anything else we've seen we can't adjust? Lots of questions and excited to see the answers

Another Little factoid is that Howard and Albany, the 2 FCS teams ODU has blown out, are a combined 2 and 7, with the one D1 win between them being Albany´s 3 point squeaker over winless Colgate. Howard´s only win came against D2 Morehouse.

Reading their forum, it seems that their fans see Liberty as a step up over their last opponent. One agreed and predicted that ODU would only win by 20 or so. These aren't Georgia State fans, always thinking that they are better than everyone and then getting their fannies whipped. Looking at their history over the last two years, a twenty point loss wouldn't be a surprise. I think our defense might struggle, but if we move the ball and don't hand it over on the 5, this might end up more like the El Cid game.

We will have to be able to run the ball consistently and control the clock to keep Heinicke on the sidelines. I'm sure the brain trust has already figured this out :D

Agreed. We should have our stable of running backs up and healthy so we are in good shape if we go that route.

Agreed...ODU loves a track meet kind of game and we have not shown an ability to put up those kind of numbers (against comparable competition that is) since 2007-2008 (73 against VMI and that 43-38 shootout with Coastal in Conway) so winning the time of possession will be key, but also no empty drives.

Maybe some combo man type coverages I'd say. Aikens and fogg I think can match up with their outsides but the thing overall is how do we see our DBS matching up against their wrs. When they are covered u know he will run so we better have some sort of "spy" to cover that.

Kid is good no doubt but they can be beat, they were beat pretty good by MD who are no world beaters by any stretch of the imagination. I would put our DBS up against theirs, and they did a good job of shutting them down. I would def say go more man and less zone coverages. I def think ODU knows how to pick apart a zone but not as good when you get hands on the wrs at the line

Liberty will have to:

1.) Score TDs. FGs won't cut it. Our D is very suspect.
2.) Pressure TH with their front four and keep him in the pocket. No easy task. It you blitz him, he will burn you.
3.) Win the TO battle.

This is probably the only home game that I see as somewhat competitive, but I like ODU 45-27.

So, you didn´t consider that 59 to 58 game against Citadel competitive??

I'd bet that the Citadel game was an anomaly. Probably were overlooked based on how the season had been going. Liberty won't get overlooked and unlike El Cid, we are neighbors, competing in other sports.

Agree that our D line is going to be the key. We will have to play our best game this year and bring some pressure with 4 to have a decent chance. Would be a very nice win for sure.

I was able to speak with one of Old Dominion’s beat writer Harry Minium from the Virginian-Pilot. Here is the transcript of our conversation:

Me: There has been several startup programs recently with ODU, Charlotte, Georgia State, several others, South Alabama, none of these have been able to come close to ODU’s level of success. How have they been able to do it?

Harry: I think they scheduled smartly. First couple of years they scheduled some Division II’s. They didn’t schedule any CAA games that first year. They were playing rosters with limited scholarship teams so they had a chance to win. They brought in some junior college players; Thomas DeMarco, quarterback, was a JUCO transfer.

The Maryland game was a nightmare on many levels. The worst game of Heinicke's career... batted balls interceptions, forced throws, Touchdowns that were declared out of bounds that clearly were not.

by the way. Maryland is in the top 25 in the country... held WVU scoreless, something like 35-0 (Then WVU upset #11 last week).

Good read. Why was bah even playing last week? Hes out 4-6 bow from a pointless game. We will have to have our best running attack of the year, play man coverage effectively and get pressure with our 4 up front. If not, its a loss
