Wow...I thought WU's 52-22 rebounding edge tonight was impressive, but I guess 61-22 is even better. Nice work on the boards tonight for the Flames.

It was fun seeing us score 100. It is kinda sad for that high school team we played though....they looked like they were going to cry.

I don't think either of our fans will be burning any cars in celebration over these victories. But its good to see both of our teams winning the games we are supposed to win handily.

Alex McLean scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds

Liberty University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Randy Dunton collected his 100th career collegiate coaching win as Liberty (3-1) defeated Southern Virginia (4-7) on Monday night at the Vines Center, 109-64.

The Flames wasted no time getting the scoring going as they took the opening tip and scored on their first possession when Damien Hubbard hit a jumper in the lane 26 seconds into the opening period, giving Liberty the 2-0 lead. Hubbard than extended the lead to 4-0 on an identical jumper from the paint with 18:34 left in the period.

The Flames stretched the lead to 7-0 on an Alex McLean lay-up at the 16:48 mark followed by an Anthony Smith free throw at 16:03. Southern Virginia was held scoreless until 15:41 left in the first half when Tanner Johnson hit a jumper from the corner to cut the Flames lead to 7-2.

Once Southern Virginia got on the scoreboard, Liberty continued on an 11-7 run capped by a B.J. Jenkins three-point basket from the corner at 12:08 left in the half, giving the Flames the 18-9 advantage.

The Flames then went on two large runs started by an 11-3 run capped by a lay-up by Larry Blair off a Tyler Baker steal, giving Liberty the 29-12 lead with 8:14 left in the opening period. The Flames continued to break the game open following that run up with a 15-4 run finished off by a Blair three-point basket from the corner at 2:59 in the half, giving Liberty the 44-16 advantage.

Southern Virginia closed out the half on an 11-2 run closing the gap to 46-27 on a David Borland tip-in off a Dallas Rivera miss with 25 seconds remaining. The Flames tried to get one more basket, but Blair’s three-point attempt with 1.1 seconds left did not connect as time expired.

The Flames opened the half on a 9-2 run capped by an Anthony Smith lay-up on a Hubbard pass, making it 55-29 with 17:19 remaining in the game. The Flames continued to extend the lead going on a 27-18 run capped off by a McLean lay-up in the paint off a Blair pass, making it an 82-47 game with 7:36 left in the game.

The Flames cruised on a 20-15 run capped by Dominique Jones’s lay-up in the paint on a Jenkins pass to make it 102-62. The basket marked Jones’ first collegiate points.
Blair led the way with 18 points for the Flames moving him into seventh all-time in the Big South in career scoring and he passed Ed Vickers for sixth all-time on the Liberty all-time scoring list.

Four other Flames scored in double figures as McLean recorded his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Smith scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Jenkins scored a season-high 16 points while connecting on 3-of-6 from three-point range. Baker rounds out the top performers with a career-high 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the three-point arc. Hubbard grabbed a game and career-high 12 rebounds as the Flames out rebounded the Knights 61-22.

Southern Virginia struggled all night from the field finishing the game shooting 31.0 percent on 18-of-58 shooting. Johnson led the Knights with 18 points on 7-of-18 shooting. Johnson, who came into the game hitting on 41.1 percent of his three-point attempts, was only 1-of-9 from beyond the arc. Dallas Rivera rounds out the top scorers for the Knights with 13 points.

Dunton’s 100 collegiate coaching wins include two seasons he coached the men’s basketball program at Marshalltown Community College in Marshalltown, Iowa, the only other program he has served as a head coach.

Tonight marks the first time since the 1987-88 season that the Flames have scored at least 90 points in three-straight games when they accomplished the feat over a four-game span. During the span, the Flames lost to Mount St. Mary’s, 105-101 on March 4, 1988. Liberty defeated Ferrum, 104-79 on February 26. Liberty beat West Virginia Wesleyan on February 23, 1988, 117-97 and the streak started on February 20, 1988 when Bluefield beat LU, 100-97.

Liberty returns to action on Saturday when East Carolina comes to the Vines Center. Tip is set for 7 p.m. and at halftime Karl Hess will be honored with the retirement of his number 11. Hess holds the Liberty all-time scoring record with 2,373 points in his career which spanned from 1977-1980.

We ran a full court press at the end of the game that made their coach REALLY upset, and he began to shout at Coach D and the student side was cheering for Coach D and he laughed and yelled something to us but I couldn't hear what it was. I think it was something like "he can't handle it" or something, but I'm not sure. Anyway, after the win, the players came up into the crowd and shook hands and thanked us for coming out. It was great to be at the game tonight.
so you didn't have work tonight huh?

Hey manager, did you hear what Coach D shouted at us right after their coach started shouting at him (He couldn't take the pressure). You were closer than I was.

he looked like a stud. i was laughing the whole time. i think the other coach was mad we ran up the score? or we pressured that ball at the end. anyways, putting up 109 is a good number no matter who it's against. too bad we didn't have doug stewart!! we might've scored another 30 points!!

The other coach was yelling at Coach D for putting on a full court press with less than a minute and up by 40. By that time we had Armon, Dominique, and others out there, so, I don't know if Coach was adding insult to injury or just getting those guys used to the press. By the way, what did everyone think of Armon last night? To me, it was the same Armon we've been seeing, he didn't even care to be out there.

Armon is just so akward. He reminds me so much of Rashad Robinson, only worse.

This is not the women's team. They (the women) need to play great teams before conference to prepare them for tournament games. The guys need to build some confidence and learn to play as a team.
I disagree. History has shown us that playing tough games is the way to go, and a much better way to prepare us for the conference. Take a look at the '04 team that won the conference championship; we played Duke and Arizona. Sure, we had the ONE game against a non D-I opponent... but the schedule was far tougher... and in the long run, our guys were stronger because of it.

One thing I know for sure about scheduling at this level because I did it a couple of times and that is this: You can't please everyone and it is one of the tougher things to do as a college coach. 1st off, what can appear to be an easy division 1 win can turn into a loss because the team greatly improves. The same happens in the opposite direction as well. Next is the fact that everyone wants home games. That is why the home and home is so popular. You come to my place this season, I go to you next. Then there are the money games that you give to nons and that you get from the majors. My point is that you have to schedule based on what you think your team's psychy and your program's budget can handle. This year's Flames needed confidence and the fans needed to see this team win so 3 nons were brought in. Also they wanted more home games and getting someone to go on the road out of conference at this level this time of year is tough. If you know you are gonna be really good the following year, you may try to get some tougher opponents on the schedule to see how you do. Otherwise, coaches try to schedule wins and money. That is just the way it is. Unless you are a shoe in for the NCAA's strength of schedule at this level means very little. The winner of the Big South will probably get a 15 or 16 if it is not Winthrop.

Wasn't at the game so I don't know if we "ran the score up" or not. If we were up by 40 and he slapped a press on that is a pretty classless thing to do. If we had pressed from the tip till the end and that was our "style" than I would not have a problem with it. Why try to humiliate an already outmatched opponent? I have seen it done and been apart of it on both sides and didn't care for it. As a coach I never did anything that would be perceived to "run it up" (Even was thanked after a 40 pt win for not "running it up") and as a player I was a part of a team that ran up the score (felt embarassed for everyone). It would be interesting to see what the explaination of that would be
As for the schedule, I have no problem with it whatsoever. With games against OU, ORU, Buffalo and that team from Gainesville, it is nice to "balance" out the schedule with a couple of "W's". This way when you look at the record, it doesn't look so bad. As ScAR said we could play low and mid major D1's and have it be a toss up, or we can get some easy wins (a la Syracuse - please ugghh-) or play teams that will give us exposure, it not necessarily victories and balance it with a few wins.
See fair and balanced. I should work for FOX News!

Talked to Coach today... apparently their coach was a little mad that BJ stole the ball when we were up by a lot. We werent pressing, BJ just saw and opening and stole the ball. So the coach turned to coach D and told him to take off the press and there wasnt one, the player was near the top of the key. So Coach D looked at him and told him the ony thing that was pressed was his shirt, Then i guess thats when he winked at u dickens.

i was not there, but a good win. now that the cupcakes are done, now we will see where we are agianst ECU. again, i do not have a problem with the schedule as D is trying to instill some confidence and get some continunity with the team. as SCAR said, the schedule gets fat with some quality opponents very soon. i also recall backin the day georgetown used to do the cupcake tour as well under john thompson and they did quite well...st. leo's anyone??
