The risk of injury is there whether you are practicing, warming up or playing a game. It is wise to get your star players out of a game after the outcome has been decided due to a big lead but that is only because the officiating becomes lax due to everyone wanting the clock to keep running. As far as scheduling these games, you have to play 25 games so whether you get hurt playing a division III team on the NCAA champs, it still impacts you the same way. As a fan we tend to second guess every injury. "What was he even in the game for at that time" kind of stuff. I just hope everyone stays healthy for the Flames. Winthrop has been fortunate the past few years not to lose Gaynor or Martin or Bradshaw. Injuries are a part of the game unfortunately but you can't schedule games worrying about that sort of thing. We lost Jay Boykin for the season during a scrimmage in practice over Christmas break. He was averaging 15 points but only playing 15 minutes a game at the time and he was shooting an incredible 75% from three! Huge blow to our team in 95-96.

Great points Scar. I guess it just "hurts" a little more by having somebody hurt in a game like this. Especially if the game has already been decided. Did you really say Jay Boykin was shooting 75% from 3? How was he only playing 15 mins a game with shooting like this? I know you speak very highly of Jay. Would of liked to see him play.

Funny you mention that SCAR, Bradshaw is not playing tonight, probably not wednesday, as is McCoullough, both out with injuries.

They just need to sit Bradshaw until he is healthy.

Yes Jay was only playing that little because Barry Taylor was our senior at the 3 spot and we were very deep that year. Jay was a red-shirt freshman coming off of an ACL injury the prior year so we were bringing him along slowly when he tore the other ACL. Really a tough blow to us all but esp. Jay. He was as good as anyone on that team IMO including Marco and LJ....Realist, I hope you guys get healthy soon. Bradshaw is key for the Eagles that is for sure.

A.G. wrote:I am anxiously awaiting the release of the new rankings. We should be top 5 in NAIA D-II, especially with our strength of schedule. Come-on coach. I'm a fan, but schedule a little tougher.
What I had heard, from reliable sources (and I hope that i'm accurate in this):

Every year, schedules in college, with a team's rival, follows a basic format: Team A plays Team B at home, and then away later in the season. The following year, Team A plays Team B away, and then home at the end of the year.

Of course, the Big South isn't that smart. Despite the fact that it is our turn to host Radford at the end of the year, the Big South powers-that-be scheduled us to end the season AT Radford, n mid Feburary. Not March.

We devised the out-of-conference schedule before the Big South schedule comes out. This makes sense; some matchups you have to schedule years in advance.

Once we found out that we were being inconvenienced, we tried to scramble to find anyone to play at home, so we could have some sort of fan base. Naturally, we didn't have time to find anyone to play us,l and few teams wanted to take a trip to hostile ground early in the season. So, we scheduled what we could.

Don't blame the coaching staff, blame the Big South. As usual.

I haven't read this whole thread, but I love the schedule.

This is not the women's team. They need to play great teams before conference to prepare them for tournament games. The guys need to build some confidence and learn to play as a team. We will be in a fight with the BS schools. We need to let these guys learn how to win and learn that they are playing at a higher level than most teams in this country. Let them get some issue out against these types of teams and be happy that we are winning. Every team in our conference, other than Winthrop, is doing the same thing. And Winthrop is like our women right now - planning for the tournament.

Half

Knights used 10-2 run to end the first half to make the score somewhat respectable. Otherwise we have been able to rotate our entire roster on the floor and score at will.

I went to the game tonight, there was a good crowd there. We ran a full court press at the end of the game that made their coach REALLY upset, and he began to shout at Coach D and the student side was cheering for Coach D and he laughed and yelled something to us but I couldn't hear what it was. I think it was something like "he can't handle it" or something, but I'm not sure. Anyway, after the win, the players came up into the crowd and shook hands and thanked us for coming out. It was great to be at the game tonight.

Coach Dunton:

Postgame Thoughts
"I'm not sure if its a school record but we had 28 assists. I think you are seeing a team that will make the extra pass and has the ability to score. There have been days when we wondered if we could get to 55. Now obviously we're not going to be scoring 100 against some of the teams we play. But if we can score between 70-85 we can hold teams to 60."

On Saturday's Game
"Its a special night because we are going to honor Karl Hess who is the all-time leading scorer. He's done a great job representing us. But we have four great games coming up with ECU and St. Francis (PA) along with Longwood. On the other side of it we'll have a great conference schedule of us."

On ECU
"They have bodies who are long & athletic. Their perimeters are extremely quick so we'll have to work on our transition defense. They'll take theior shiots and be difficult so we'll see who works the boards the hardest."

This marks Coach D's 100th Career Victory as Head Coach
