Per Lang, Brandon Apon is out for the Kent game with a shoulder injury suffered in Saturday´s scrimmage. No info on how long he will be out. Gagliardi should get the start and if he is healthy I think we will be OK. He was listed as the starter over Gunn and Apon last year before he got hurt.

Wow! The new Kent State coach is making waves by passing on his senior quarterback to start a redshirt freshman against us. The kid's first ever college game will be against our defense next Thursday night. It sounds like he likes to run so if we can pressure him he likely will have happy feet. It could also signal even more reliance on Dri carrying the rock.

Colin Reardon has officially won Kent State's 2013 quarterback derby.

Reardon was listed as the starting signal-caller in the depth chart released by first-year head coach Paul Haynes on Monday. The redshirt freshman has battled senior David Fisher through spring drills and preseason camp.

Reardon, a 6-foot-1, 202-pound QB from Poland, Ohio, has shown solid arm strength and accuracy throughout preseason camp. He has also sported excellent athleticism, making several big plays on scrambles.

I'm sure Kent State people are saying the same thing when they look at Liberty's offense -- Receivers with no game experience, freshman starting at right guard, 1,000-yard tailback suspended, top tight end out, etc.

Agreed.

There is no shortage of uncertainty surrounding this season opener. Based on the media discussions, I think we can safely agree that there is not much concern about this FCS squad coming into Dix Stadium with BGSU coming the next week and trips to LSU & Penn State immediately thereafter.

This is a perfect storm for US to be a trap game for them. As I have said since the schedule came out, I don't pick us to win this game, but as we get closer, with all that said, you can certainly expect some overconfidence to come into play

There is no chance that the first game of a new coaching staff will be a trap game for Kent State. None whatsoever. Haynes has been waiting his entire life for the opportunity to lead a Division I program. He will not overlook his first opponent.

Sly hit on the underlying message of my point. Yes this is his first game, but you have to expect that these guys will go in with the "we are an FBS team, we should squash this lowly FCS team like a bug" attitude. As Sly astutely noted, this is a good test of how good a motivator Haynes is now that HE is the guy doing the motivating.

Beej you keep saying you don't have us winning but why do you feel the need to argue with anybody who says just that?

I guess you could say Im hedging my bets. As you well know, Ive been VERY wrong quite a bit on games over the years. Im keeping expectations low for the game but at the same time, keeping the idea in the back of my mind that Liberty has surprised people over the years, especially in FBS games and allowing myself to be ok with either outcome.

So I was looking over some of their game summaries from last season, and it becomes pretty clear that they were giving up a lot of yards almost every game. Everyone knows their return game is dangerous with Archer, but the real dangerous stat is their turnover margin from last year. They ranked #4 in FBS at +1.43 per game. Their O came in at #73 with about 388 yards total offense and their defense gave up about 410 yards per game (for #74 in FBS). Will we be able to move the ball on them? I like our odds, but my mind flashes back to the turnovers that have killed us against the last couple of FBS opponents. If we avoid the INT do we have a shot?

Do we have a shot? Certainly. The Ball State win was an anomaly in 2010 but I agree despite my pick that if we can keep the turnovers off the board, we have a shot.
