The way this article is written it makes it sound like their referencing D1-AA as D2. I think that he's on his way to LU or Norfolk state. It would be silly to sit out another year at a D-1 FBS school. Put my money on Sims to start at QB @ LU or Norfolk fa'sure this fall...

D2 means D2. It´s not complicated. He is considering it because it would allow him to play the next 2 years. Going to either an FBS or FCS program would not. If he is going to stay in D1 and play only one more year, I agree that FBS makes more sense than FCS.

Yes...whether Liberty or Norfolk State or Richmond or Wyoming or Cal or Wisconsin or wherever...if he goes to any division I school he will only get one year.

I could be mistaken, but I was under the impression that if you had one year remaining of eligibility and decided to transfer, you would have to sit out a year regardless of the level of football classification.

As long as he has at least 2 years of eligibility he can transfer down to FCS and not have to sit out a year.

That's been my understanding. Even Sims own teammate Richardson will start this fall at LU! But Im guessing it was due to different circumstances(he wasn't released due to academics like Sims was?) . However if it was an academics problem that's not allowing him to play immediately at LU why couldn't we have just pushed him through some 8week online summer courses to pull up his GPA?haha

That stinks that he was forced to transfer for family/personal stuff and that it now negatively affects his ability to come the "Most Exciting University In The World"... Can we get some Jerry Jr Lawyer action on the NCAA or what ???

He wasn't "forced" to for family reasons. He voluntarily chose to do so for those reasons, and then applied for an NCAA waiver granting him the right to compete immediately due to the proximity to his family of his new institution.

Not an institution involved in this process but I did find some information on the transfer rules there so credit to GoUTSA.com for this. Note the bolded line:

In most cases, a student-athlete who transfers from one NCAA institution to another is permitted to practice and receive athletics aid immediately at the second institution. As a general rule, the transfer student is required to serve an "academic year-in-residence" at the second institution prior to competing. However, several exceptions to the transfer rule exist that enable a student-athlete to be immediately eligible for competition at the second institution. The most commonly used exception is known as the "one-time transfer exception." As the name suggests, this exception allows a student-athlete to transfer from one NCAA institution to another on one occasion and be immediately eligible for competition. Certain conditions must be met to use this exception, including: (1) the student-athlete must have been in good academic standing and academically eligible for competition at the previous institution; (2) the previous institution must grant the student-athlete written permission to use of the exception; and (3) the student-athlete cannot have transferred previously from a four-year institution. [Note: In Division I, the one-time transfer exception is not available if the student-athlete wishes to participate in basketball, men's ice hockey or Division I/Football Bowl Subdivision football at the second institution].

Because he transferred from one four year institution (Alabama) to another four year institution (Virginia), even though he used the waiver for family proximity (or whatever its called), my guess is that he would still have to sit out a year because of his previous transfer if he landed at an FCS or FBS institution, unless the second institution appealed to the NCAA.

Sims has to sit this year even if he goes D2. The difference is that the 5 year limit would not apply to a D2 school, therefore he could play 2 years there, using his 4 years of eligibility in 6 years instead of 5.

If this kid has serious aspirations of playing in the NFL, he needs to look for a BCS school that will be in serious need of a QB in 2014, and he needs to work his butt off to learn their system and make himself a better QB during the year he sits out. Playing 2 years in D2 will just make him a year older and that much less attractive to the pros, and whatever success he has at that level will be questioned due to the competition.

Easy there jlread...teams report next week for fall camp so he is probably taking all the time he needs to make a decision. I think that the article in my hometown fishwrap indicated he was accepted to all the places he is considering so its a matter of which place best meets his further aspirations whatever he decides
