Looks like we have our first verbal for that all important 2014 class.

This big kid didn´t play a lot last year for a very good HS team, but he apparently has shown talent playing AAU ball and figures to play a much bigger role on his HS team as a Senior next year. He made his verbal after camping at Liberty.

The FlamesNation link has a video from his Sophomore year. He´s a big kid. Not a stick, even as a Soph in HS, probably 16.

BTW, we recruited Evan´s HS teammate, G JC Show, who ended up choosing to go to Monmouth. Apparently Evan made exactly the opposite decisión, choosing us over the Hawks

Clarks Summit? My grandfather graduated from BBC way back in the day. Small town so this kid probably has some ties to that school.

A few months ago, Abington Heights senior Evan Maxwell was filling a role on a Comets team that went to the PIAA Class AAA Eastern final.

In another year, the 6-foot-10 Maxwell will be fulfilling another role - Division I athlete.

The Comets' post player has verbally committed to play his collegiate basketball at Liberty University in Virginia, part of the Big South Conference.

"I was actually planning to decide after July," Maxwell said. "I didn't know what other opportunities would be in front of me.

"I wasn't really expecting to decide this early. I went to a camp at Liberty and I really liked it there. It was between there and Monmouth. I visited Monmouth and I don't know, I was praying a lot and doing self examination, and God was kind of pulling on my heart that Liberty was the place for me."

I met Evan and his parents this weekend along with Stavian Allen. Both seem like really good Liberty kids! Evan is really excited to be coming to Liberty. His role on his HS team this season is going to improve and he will probably would have gotten more attention from schools his senior year but he will already be a Flame by then. He told me he probably would have eventually found Liberty if they hadn't found him. Liberty is the kind of school that he really wants to attend. I was helping he and Stavian decide on which numbers they wanted to wear. They both wanted to wear 20 in honor of me (just kidding).

That would be a bit of a misnomer CJ (I did use that correctly right?). He did average 3 points a game yes, but he also did not play that many minutes for them last year. This season will tell us more of what we can expect than anything I would venture.

So not only did he only score 3 points a game but it was because he wasn't good enough to play more to score more

I´m not sure where the quote originated, but it´s become a cliche. ¨You can´t coach 7 foot.¨ (Or 6´10¨ for that matter.)

A misnomer has to do with a name which seems to indicate something the person or thing is not such as a ¨koala bear¨, which is not a bear at all, but a marsupial. I would simply say in this case that Evan´s HS numbers may be MISLEADING.

So, going back to when you were coaching and recruiting college basketball Purple. If you had a kid in camp and saw him in AAU as well and could see he had ability, but his HS coach didn´t play him much, would you trust your own evaluation more or the HS coaches?

Evan´s HS team last year apparently had a bunch of seniors who had played together for years and had great chemistry. The coach didn´t want to mess with a good thing to develop a big kid who might have more upside, but didn´t fit in as well with that chemistry. It worked out pretty well for him. Let´s see how the kid does this year.

If you are talking 6'10 at the sub D1 level it would be worth a look and possibly a risk. At the D1 camp play and AAU would be helpful since there obviously is no film to judge. But you would still want to know why a 6'10" can't score more than 3 points a game. Is his HS team like VCU and he is a plodding post? Was he the only Jr on a team of 14 seniors? Does he have 3 players at his position that are going high level D1? Just lots and lots of questions

And what's going to change THIS year? Does he have a new HS coach? Is he running a new system? Is he the only Senior? If he wasn't good enough to play last season what makes him good enough this year?

Maybe he is a risky project type sign that will take a couple of years to develop. We had a need for a big man and with a large signing class for next season, it seems to be a reasonable gamble. While the skepticism is understood, maybe he will have an opportunity to shine this year and will be considered a steal.

Our track record with recruiting post players is shaky at best. Bringing in a 6'10" player who looked good at LU camp is Have you seen the caliber of players at LU Camp? And AAU is always shadier than a Mangrove field so what is it that gives everyone confidence? I'm absolutely positive he is a great kid with a tremendous family and upbringing. I'm also positive he is a College level player. But a D1 kid? A kid who is going to come in and be an anchor for us in the post? The kind of player that gets us over the hump to be perennial competitors?

Did they run out of 6'10" kids at the Post Player store? A 7' kid you take a flier on. A freak athlete, you take a flier on. A small guard who set a State record for career points and averaged nearly 30 a game you take a flier on. A 6'9" local kid with D1 talent and POY honors you take a flier on. An International player, you take a flier on.
