The newest LU tunnel is now front page, headline news of the local paper.

LU starts clearing ground for tunnel project

A bit of groundbreaking construction technology will be used to insert a pair of vehicle tunnels under the railroad tracks between the Liberty University campus and Wards Road in Lynchburg.

The tunneling technique is new for railroads in this country, said Charles Spence, who’s directing dozens of construction projects on campus this summer.

“It’s not brain surgery. It’s the availability of equipment and knowledge,” Spence said. “Not many people put it together.”

...LU hired a tunnel-building company from Fort Worth, Texas, for the installation.

I'm confused. If they are hiring a company from Ft. Worth, are they building this tunnel for cows?

Hey, a tunnel for cows is better than a reading center for ants.

But, on a serious note, as a newbie to Lynchburg, I got confused on Wards road on how to access the LU campus and think that a tunnel would be a great addition. I look forward to it!

To be fair we have a habit of kinda doing a fake on ramp occasionally. The lack of an on ramp from candler mt to 501N has to acount for about 50% of crashes in Lynchburg.

Its crazy seeing so many projects going on at the same time with the medical school and the first high rise dorm and with work on the new freestanding buildings for School of Music and Science Hall and seeing what all is in the current master plan its amazing how much change has taken place already and how different this place will be even come fall 2014 much less five years from now

There is a story in the News & Advance today about the new Medical School building. At least on the online version, I haven't seen the actual paper, the picture they use I don't think is of the Medical School but of the new Runk & Pratt nursing home at Liberty Ridge. Is that right? I guess it can be confusing with two major project that close to each other on the mountain... Still it looks like someone should be able to tell that it is not the same building.

Construction on Liberty University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine is ahead of schedule.
Dean of the college, Dr. Ronnie Martin, said this week he expects to have a temporary occupancy permit by Feb. 28, 2014.
“They are about two weeks ahead of schedule” in part because of the good weather, Martin said.

Youre right. I've seen the medical school while driving along 460 and it doesnt look like that. ANyway, its awesome that it is ahead of schedule (cue snarky comment from someone about how things usually finish late) and Im sure itll help with recruiting for the first class of med school students to be able to walk them through come February next year

also the new medical school is coming along. Provisional accreditation already.
